Unfilmable 50: The Silence of the Lambs

Hey there! How's it going, old friend? Know it's been a while since we've been in touch and I was wondering if you had gotten a chance to put the lotion on the skin?

Somebody needs to find the tweet about a husband’s duty to point out character actors to their wife, along with relevant trivia. I know many people who would appreciate it

This movie was incredible when I saw it as a teenager. One of my trans friends LOVES it so I don't feel so bad about liking it.

shea dewar

It's a live action seinen anime. I love it. All of it.

Colin Smith

Totally agree

I should ask my wife about that. She's a big musical fan, I wonder if she's familiar. -GB

Now lets all go listen to the soundtrack to the Silence of the Lambs musical!

Cold soup eaters rise up

At least one other person in the comments also does that!

Hey come on now. I eat cold soup out of the can. I’m not a psychopath I just like cold food! I’m normal! I swear!

Unpopular opinion, I think the Hannibal TV series is kinda annoying and up it's own ass. Not to say that it isn't good or worth watching! It is, but to paraphrase a random person I talked to about it "I guess in order to be a serial killer in this show's world you also have to have a fucking art degree." It's almost comical and never self-aware about that. Again, that just annoyed me and took me out of it. It's like the filmmaking equivalent of "clever, clever writer" stuff as Gary calls it. Sorry for the ramble

I heard Kole, who’s this other guy?

Sage Beatty

I first watched this movie when I was around 13, the day after church camp. What a roller coaster that was!

Bradley Morton

Oh yeah, definitely. Sorry about that. I was so busy laughing along that I totally misunderstood.

I watched more of the extended Hannibal-verse in quarantine and some of the context added a nice bit of understanding to Hopkins' performance for me; like his relationship with Will Graham, he loves having a pupil. His piercing stare seems to be searching Starling for comprehension as he lays out clues for her to piece together. There may be attraction there, sure, but he's also hungry for someone to instruct and guide.

What I meant was that Hannibal would get irritated too, not that it wouldn't be ineffective! GB

I know Gary laughed about Hannibal blasting that guard in the eyes at point blank with OC, saying that’s not how mace works, but that’s actually way more brutal than hitting him from several feet away because that’s known to create the “hydraulic needle effect”, where the pressure drives the particles into the soft tissue, potentially causing damage to the eyes. Also, I can’t believe I was five seasons into ‘Monk’ when my friend’s little sister walked into the room, looked at Captain Stottlemeyer, said, “Hey, that’s Buffalo Bill!”, and then walked out, and I somehow hadn’t figured that out after the first four seasons.

Does the movie read to anyone else a level of attraction/flirtation between Clairice and the supervisor? The shot that lingers on the handshake always felt like it was playing with that kind of emotion. Maybe there's a portion of "every heroine needs a love interested" branded into my brain from 80's and 90's generllilized film, but it still feels like a pretty good representation of that weird space of having the mix of attraction, affection, and respect between two characters, but also in the boundaries of, in this instance, age and superior/subordinate dynamic

I live in Pittsburgh, where a good bit of this movie was shot (I don't know how much.) But last year there was a screening of the movie in the very building that contained Hannibal's weird ballroom jail cell. We watched the movie and then went over to that exact room where they had recreated the cell and all the props etc. It was really cool. Some lady was trying to get us to pay to stay in the Buffalo Bill house. But anyhow, the building is called Soliders and Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum and is located nearby University of Pittsburgh .

2022 for some reason was the year of Lecter for me. I read all the books, watched all the movies, and binged the show. And hot take, Mads Mikkelson is the superior Hannibal. Although Hopkins is also really really good, but when they show him before he gets caught and how unsettling he is I feel like I’d be like “yeah that dude might eat people”. Mads is so suave and likable, and the calculated way he inserts himself into lives you gain a weird respect for it. And the homoerotic undertones of his and Will’s relationship is the thing I didn’t know the story needed until I saw it. Hannibal Rising was a cash grab for sure. It was basically if they made an Assassins Creed story starring Hannibal. Family is killed by four men, he grows up and hunts those four men, side quests include banging his aunt.

I need you guys to walk back that eating cold soup out of a can comment.

Love this movie. One of my coworkers is an Indian-American and moved to the US in the early 90s and he barely knew English at the time, and this was the first English language movie he ever saw, which he remembered being COMPLETELY baffled by it. This is a pretty challenging movie just on its own, I can't imagine what it would be like for a non-native English speaker.

I experienced Hannibal Lecter in NBC's Hannibal first, then later watched the Silence of the Lambs. (gen z) so looking at the series beyond the show itself is odd. As i feel theyre both the same genera but not the same expression. Due to the show taking place before the movie, it has some freedom to play around with canon established from the book. I did enjoy the movie when I eventually watched it in a "oh shit, hi Crawford!....oh fuck, Chilton's in this!?!?!?!?" Kinda way. Loved this overview as always, as this will probably inspire me to go back and rewatch S1-2 of a show I enjoy from my early covid days! (Especially cause, like Gary, I read the first books during quarantine. Read up on the bullshit to come in the back half of the books, and noped out hard!) (Note added later: The fandom for NBC Hannibal, at least my side of the internet, includes a huge group of people (myself included) who viewed Wills journey of self discovery as an allegory to trans/queer coming out. Will being my first gender envy character. Again, he's 'coming out' as a murderer who wants to fuck his therapist, so representation mileage varies in the serial killer/horror genera)

Elli Miller

The scene where the camera is fixed on Lecter's eyes while he gives the dialogue about the lambs is absolutely menacing/mesmerizing. I understand and respect that its a problematic film, but man the pure craft of filmmaking is hard to ignore. It also frames really well the boys club of the FBI. Every scene with Agent Starling feels like she is being either dismissed or physically menaced by men. Again all this being said with the disclaimer that the damage its done to trans people is 100% real and valid. Its a complicated film.

Kyle C.

My trans friends LOVE this movie which makes me feel better about liking it.
