Call and Response: January 2022
Added 2023-01-15 16:54:50 +0000 UTCHello! The purpose of this post is to call for your questions and prompts for WOFF! Dispatch. Please respond by Wednesday, January 18 by leaving a comment on this post.
We're looking for two kinds of things:
1. Suggestions for our long-form discussion prompt.
2. Q&A about the shows, behind the scenes details, and miscellaneous (including off-the-wall and off-topic questions). Ask us about games or other media, life in general... You name it.
One caveat we've given in the past: If the question is too personal or gross, we may dance around it and not give a direct answer.
We look forward to making this new kind of WOFF! episode together with you.

Inspired by a few of your discussions in recent episodes, I recently started watching King Of The Hill as my bedtime tv show. When the show originally aired, I had a knee-jerk dislike of the show because I mistakenly thought it was glorifying small-town hickery, and as someone who grew up in a small town, I'd had quite enough of that by 1997. When I finally gave King Of The Hill a second chance in syndication (~2010), I found it immensely wholesome, reliably funny, and far more clear-eyed in its depiction of rural whiteness than I originally thought. Despite that, though, I'd still never really tried to main-line the show -- until now. Anyway, I've not finished the series yet, but I was wondering whether you might be willing to share some thoughts about Hank's temperamental colleague, Joe Jack. Thanks in advance, Hunnies.

2023-01-18 16:04:56 +0000 UTCWho would play you in the gritty Duckfeed biopic, available exclusively on HBO Max?

2023-01-18 01:37:17 +0000 UTCI played Last Stand: Union City over like 15 times full through and it was better than some 20-30 hour games

2023-01-18 01:31:33 +0000 UTCOh man, Armor Games. Haven't thought about them in forever. So many hours of simple fun.

2023-01-18 01:27:35 +0000 UTCYou’ve often referenced Tower of Latria to describe aspects of other games (not restricted to Souls/Fromsoft). Happy to report I finally played Demon Souls for the first time on PS5. Latria is so good and so gross. Also love how the first section in the prison feels so indifferent to you as the player, made me think of the end of Portal a little bit. Have you had any more recent game experiences that captured that cool “I’m not supposed to be here” feeling, like the Clockwork Mansion in Dishonored 2? Anyways love the show, y’all are great.

2023-01-17 16:35:24 +0000 UTCI was recently having a conversation with a friend about manga and when talking about a particularly bleak one, she asked why people make and/ or enjoy such stories. I've had similar conversations after suggesting, say, a Dark Souls or a Majora's Mask and hearing back "No, the world is depressing enough, I want my games to cheer me up." I don't have the appetite for bleak that you guys do, but I love the atmosphere in things like War of the Worlds or Attack on Titan, and every now and then I do have a macabre fascination with some historic horribleness. Where do you think a love for the bleak comes from? What do you see as the benefits of seeking something out that might be depressing? I don't know if this is a topic or something you have a go-to answer for.

2023-01-17 11:12:06 +0000 UTCI recently got a small treadmill for my office with the intent to walk and play video games at the same time. After almost getting yeeted ass-first into the hallway the first time I tried to jump in Sekiro, I've had to reconsider what games are treadmill friendly. What are some of your favorite slow-paced, controller-friendly games you've played over the years? My brain is too smooth for DOTS II, but turn-based RPGs seem like strong contenders.

2023-01-17 04:57:11 +0000 UTCYou've talked about your individual gaming psychographics on the show before - what compels your progression in games, what draws you from one game to another, etc. - as well as those types which you feel are totally alien to your experience: the difficulty chasers or 100% completionists or 10,000 hours in a live service type gamers. I was wondering if you feel that your psychographic has changed as you've done Duckfeed, or if not, if you would like to change how your compulsions may drive play? I rarely let myself languish in media, and I feel most comfortable when trying to fill every free second of my day with new things to read, watch, or play. Despite this, I often wish I could settle into a familiar comfort instead of constantly trying to build my personal library of experiences up. Thanks for the show!

2023-01-16 22:59:19 +0000 UTCA year or so ago I really got into Deadeus, a home brew gameboy horror game. It’s a non-combat find-all-the-endings game a la The Stanley Parable. It feels very gameboyish despite the fact that nothing from that era would have been this weird or ambitious. Just curious if you had any favorite home brew games and if you’ve ever considered doing one for WOFF.

2023-01-16 21:39:44 +0000 UTCImagine you've adapted a video game to film/television, what's the most embarassing thing you can say to promote it?

2023-01-16 20:08:21 +0000 UTCWhere I live we're just getting through the coldest part of the year(the coldest night this year being -40F, -54 windchill). What do y'all do to survive winter? This can be games-wise, daily life, confort food, mental health, etc. Personally, I've always been a sun lamp +blankets+ weird Sherlock Holmes adaptations person. Thanks for giving me something to look forward to every time I go to work <3

2023-01-16 04:41:37 +0000 UTCHey guys, hope you're well, I was wondering if you guys had any input on the whole flash game era. À la Andkon, Armor Games, Miniclip. I'm in my twenties and those were some of the best games I've ever played. Some even outranking triple-A games of today.

2023-01-16 03:51:09 +0000 UTC1) What was the game that broke you? Specifically, have you ever had a moment playing a game where your views and opinions on a certain type or aspect of games finally snapped and flipped completely? For example, the JRPG that broke Gary's back. 2) One night in uni, during a particularly numbing wave of depression, I decided to start playing Saint's Row 3 at 7pm. Inexplicably, I played the entire game through in one session, finally going to bed at just after 7am. It was the best I had ever felt at the time, and truly healed me for a good while. Even now, in my much better state, I look back on that night fondly. Have either of you had similar "fuck it"-type fugue state therapeutic gaming experiences?

2023-01-16 02:40:12 +0000 UTCHey guys got a hyper-specific Gary question today. About halfway through the Texas Chainsaw Massacre Episode of Unfilmable Gary mentioned a 3 volume set of books about the mechanics of death made to help writers of murder mysteries and whatnot he picked up at a thrift store. Could you share the titles and authors of these books please? Thanks for all the great content!

2023-01-16 01:11:19 +0000 UTCWas wondering if you ever think you’ll have to revisit a game for WOFF either out of want or necessity, and what you think that game might be in the event you decide to. Love you guys, keep up the good work.

2023-01-15 20:10:12 +0000 UTCWhat's your favorite video game urban legend (like Mew under the truck, the triforce in Ocarina of Time, etc.)? Would you ever consider doing an episode about game urban legends?

2023-01-15 19:59:30 +0000 UTCAs a filthy casual, I usually go back to the same games every week, namely Forza Horizon 5 and Destiny 2. Both games get new weekly challenges and small updates to keep players coming back. My question is, do you feel that games having small weekly updates is good to keep players returning for the new goodies or do you feel it’s a hinderance that keeps game developers from creating larger expansions or even new games? I’ve heard both sides and curious what you think. Thanks!

2023-01-15 19:46:46 +0000 UTCI was watching the game awards and saw the trailer for The Lords of the Fallen reboot and immediately thought of Gary. (Also the devs seem to think they're making a sequel to mortal shell?) What are your guys topical reacts to new Lords of the fallen content, love the shows-Jill

2023-01-15 19:23:33 +0000 UTCI've never played any of the Dead Space games, I don't tend to do well with horror stuff, but I've seen Kole and others play parts of it and it looks like a fun series. So when I saw the other day Steam was having a Pre-Sale promo -- pre-order the remake of Dead Space and get Dead Space 2 with it, a $20 value -- I jumped on it. That action made me realize I can count on one hand the number of games I've pre-ordered in the last 15 years. Skyrim, Fallout 4, Mass Effect remaster, and now Dead Space remake. Compare that to 90's and 2000's, when I pre-ordered games ALL the time. I think for me at least there's 3 reasons for this -- getting games in digital format makes it eaiser to get new games, so less incentive to pre-order; sales often happen on online platforms like Steam so if you can be just a little patient you don't need to wait long for a sale; and my gaming backlog now that I'm a adult is SO huge by the time I play a game it's no longer 'new'. But as I recall, you guys still pre-order games a lot, and it's not just cause of the shows. How much pre-ordering DO you do. and why or why not do you decide when to pre-order? Thanks and happy 2023!

2023-01-15 18:23:31 +0000 UTCHappy new year folks, long time listener, first time responder! Question for Gary - You mentioned that you'd be playing Midnight Suns over the holidays and I wondered how you've got on with it? At first I found the friendship sim, dialogue and bioware-esque light v dark rating pretty jarring, and just made me want to play xcom again. However, a few weeks down the line and I'm finding the combat and roster fun enough to keep coming back. Ghost rider's deck - Is it metal? Love the network, keep up the great work!

2023-01-15 18:19:43 +0000 UTCFor PC gaming, what's your hardware upgrade cycle? Do you ever build your own computers? How often do you buy a new computer or upgrade parts? How much is "future proofing" a thing for you?

2023-01-15 18:11:40 +0000 UTCI got in too late to say this in the last Call and Response, but I wanted to show my appreciation for the Winter Western RPG. Your Fallout 3/New Vegas episodes were my introduction to the network, and while I appreciate pretty much everything you two put out, the longform discussions of these large-scale narratives are some of my favorite things you two put out. The long-form stories broken up by your insights sort of make for audiobooks that aren't quite as exhausting or monotonous. Even outside of the season, episodes like Tyranny or Planescape make for perfect work catnip. No question, just wanted to compliment one of my favorite things about the network. Thank you!
Matt Bixler! Hello!
2023-01-15 17:16:44 +0000 UTCWhat's your most recent existential crisis? For me, I don't know why, but getting to Godwyn's body at the base of the Erdtree just triggered something in me. I've gone back and forth between "life has meaning" and "life is meaningless", but seeing Godwyn's fucked up corpse made me wonder if there was a meaning to everything, and if that meaning was just alien or worthless. That just scared me more than if existence meant nothing.

2023-01-15 17:15:59 +0000 UTCI am a certain kind of person, who loved seeing friends enjoy gaming experiences. Whether it’s running the rules of a board game while my pals play it, or buying some games for friends so I can watch them play it, I absolutely adore watching people who I care about experience media (I know, total beta behavior, nothing wrong with that) How much mileage do you get out of being there for your friends and loved ones experience media. Does watching let’s plays scratch this itch at all? Or do you need the built in relationship to bouy the play? Does chatting about your prospective playthroughs of games on WOFF help satiate this in anyway? Just curious :)

2023-01-15 17:10:52 +0000 UTCI was listening to the Nexlander podcast and one of them mentioned something about World of Warcraft. "it's not a game I want to play, it's just something I want to log in and look at every 6 months or so." something clicked into place in my brain, realizing I have this same relationship. I don't really have fun with the sub ten I fuck around with WOW each year. But I kind of just want to look at it, like oh yeah I remember this. Sure does make that sound when I click the buttons... So what is your game that you don't want to play, just look at once a year or so?

2023-01-15 17:09:25 +0000 UTCQuestion for Ohio Man Kole: my wife and I are visiting Cleveland this year in the fall. Any suggestions for underrated or lesser known things to do in the area that wouldn't pop up in a standard search? Thanks!
