Bonfireside Chat 244: Altus Central

This week we dip into the wooded valley at the heart of the Altus Plateau, to see the unpleasant sights and hear the unpleasant sounds. See, there are Wormfaces about. And also a very deadly Bloody Finger who has been double dipping in powers. And a tomb with a gimmick straight of of Zelda. Altus is weird!

Glad I listened, just finished this area and missed the arsenal+1 badge and some other stuff. Keep up the good good!

unprompted but this show is super fun. it's the only podcast i habitually check the feed more often than it updates

That's his body. It's possessed by Shabriri. So Yura's story ends here but Shabiri is who you spoke to at the MotG.

You guys mentioned that you weren’t sure why that Black Knife Assassin was hanging out outside of Kristoff’s Heroes Grave, so I wanted to posit my reading on why she might be there. I don’t exactly remember why I interpreted it this way, but that whole little area with the lightning rams and Lanseax and all of the references to Godwyn made me presume that this area was likely Godwyn’s personal pasture before he was murdered. Between the Sword Epitaph describing his deeds and all of the other little mementos to him scattered about, that just how I read it.

I'm fairly certain we did talk about that shackle when we talked about Patches/Morgott, it was just ages ago. Great theory on the worm faces! -GB

Did you discuss Fringefolk Hero's Grave in a previous episode? We walked by it, but I don't remember you getting into your feelings about the chariots.

Joseph

Two minor things- first, from how you discussed the Mohg gem it sounds like you are unaware but there is a shackle for Mohg like Morgotts, found in the shunning grounds Second, and more a theory, but if the worm faces came to be from eating deathroot corrupted roots it’s possible that the worm faces in Faram Azula deliberately ate deathroot to emulate Gurranq

Two small disagreements (though not meant as criticism): 1. I really liked Yura's storyline. I agree that it's very small and missable (missed it on my first playthrough apart from the initial encounter and was very confused at the mountaintops). But it's among a small number of more obscure storylines that has grown on me upon repeat playthroughs. I know this is not the common experience, but realizing on my second character that I could explore the areas around the Raya Lucaria gate was such a mindblowing moment and then discovering more of Yura from there felt like a meaningful reward. The arc of him being a mentor figure who gets you out of multiple jams, to you helping him, to finding him dying and slaying his lover/nemesis felt poignant and sad and highlighted the development of the player character to me. 2. Christoph: Rules. Yes, boring design in some ways, but on my pure magic build, he was an incredible tank for me. All love for Lhutel, but as a pure tank Christoph outshines her by not losing aggro as often (as a result of Lhutel teleporting). Those are just my two cents. Appreciate all the work you do (and the space of disagreement that you open up).

Ya know, as soon as I sent it thought maybe there was something fishy about that encounter. It’s been like 10 months since I got there so I’m a bit foggy on it.

Josh Sanko

was it really yura in MotG? because I had a different experience...

Sebastian Krüger

It’s been a while since I did the Yura story, but he looked really cool so I remembered him and wanted to see him again. I got the first encounter and then ran into him at one of the first Sites of Grace in either the Mountaintops of the Giants or Consecrated Snowfields. He gives you a little dialogue and then was basically a dead end. Maybe I’m wrong, but that was a quest I hoped to be described on the show and I didn’t think it ended here 😅
