Unfilmable 47: Something in the Dirt

John and Levi are two Los Angeles fuckups who are held together by the fact that they witnessed a supernatural phenomenon... and they want to monetize it. What follows is a claustrophobic and dense sequence of rabbit holes and abuses, resulting in terrible tragedy. But how much of it's real?

Something in the Dirt is Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead at their best, refining their form of funny, human-centered supernatural horror, and offering a fresh line of questioning into some of their previous pet themes.

Watch this movie before you listen. It's very good.

In a FB movie group, we've come to call these movies the ShittyCarl-verse. H/t to you guys.

Absolutely sideswiped by Kole unearthing The Human Centipede from a part of my brain where I don’t have to think about it but that was an extremely apt laugh out loud metaphor 😭

No response needed! I feel sometimes that intelligent people analyzing a movie can bring it to a more well-rounded place than it would otherwise be on its own. But I listened to the episode and hear where you guys were coming from, it just never struck me in those ways. Love the show, and looking forward to Creep.

as someone who has seen a giant psychedelic UFO with other witnesses, this is an excellent theme for a horror film. to cling to complete skepticism of the unknown is a form of ignorance or denial, but to baselessly presume onesself understand that unknown is almost always madness. it's particularly canny to draw the line between projection-based paranormal theory and fascism. grand magical thinking enables nihilistic and fascistic thinking "they don't know how to place value on themselves and other people outside of pure knowledge and knowing the right answer to things" is very well observed. great episode

You know, I wonder if Levi is so scared of earthquakes because of how his sister died. At the end when John is being more honest (still, grain of salt there) he mentions that Levi's sister slipped and fell at a construction site. He blames drug use or some shit, but what if they were screwing around (or stealing supplies) on a scaffolding or building skeleton, a small earthquake hit, and that's how and why she slipped. That would really explain why Levi seemingly has trauma responses to the earthquakes. Or it could just be because earthquakes in California are scary, but I guess that's also a theme of the movie; we don't know.

There's not really a way to respond! I think media just hits folks extremely differently and if it's far enough apart, there isn't really discussion to be had. I feel the same way hearing people talk about Vampire Survivors. -GB

I normally find myself agreeing with the recommendations on this show, or at least can see what was meaningful about it despite a lack of enjoyment. This movie though…. Felt like such a waste of two hours. It wasn’t about anything except two shitty people half-convincing themselves of stuff to fill in the gaps. I get it: human fallibility in the face of the supernatural, but with a jaded, modern slant. It felt like a reaaaaally bad-faith presentation of “irony,” which missed the point of why a viewer might otherwise have been interested.

The "hey can I have another beer to help me sleep" line had me screaming at my TV ngl. What a self centered, terrible character. I loved it.

Haha, me too!

I really, really like their movies.

It's been a long time since I finished a movie and was chilled to the bone *and* wanted to beat the bloody piss out of a character. Powerful stuff.

Jonathan Scratch

This is actually my favorite of their movies so far. Didn’t really feel Synchronic, but this one really worked for me!

Sarah Cleary

Kole really simps the shit out of these directors, huh?
