Bonfireside Chat 246: Western Altus

We know we've been in here for a while, but there's a lot of Altus to explore. We also get to pay a visit to one of ER's most overlooked legacy dungeons The Shaded Castle, but Torrent doesn't get to come.

The Slim Shaded Castle!?!?!

Juli Reed

You didn’t mention it but there’s one of the portraits hidden in a section of the moat. It’s extremely memorable to me because there’s a gap between the wall and roof you can fall into and become entirely stuck, which is rare for from to overlook. But I don’t fault them because of a game this size. Also, do y’all have plans on covering all of the portraits, their locations, and any significance they might have? Love the show!

To me, this is the perfect amount of toughness that I come to Fromsoft for. Except for the Revenants, I think every time I fight one of those things I instantly regret it.

It wasn't mentioned, but there is a really challenging area before the boss in the Shaded Castle. The courtyard with a cleanrot knight in front and several dogs hiding in a corner behind. Even knowing about the dog ambush, it's always a challenge to take down either the dogs or knight before the other is on top of you. I've died more in that area than any other part of the Shaded Castle. As always, great discussion!

Idk if it’s what Gary saw, but the first couple minutes of this Vaati video are about the map’s inspirations, and he has his sources in the description box https://youtu.be/vtD_fU_XN3g

Kicking myself as I'm listening to this episode, i entered the shaded castle and got to the first bonfire and then never finished it! Whenever there's some DLC I'll have to make sure i don't skip it again.

Come for the excellent discussion, stay for the reminders of Robbie Williams' number 1 hit song "Rock DJ."
