Bonfireside Chat 268: Mountaintop of the Giants (Part 4)

I guess mountains are quite big, when you think about it.

Re-listening to this a year later and you make fun saying the DLC will contain Melina relatives named Gelina and Relina and well, there was a Relanna lol.

Make another survival horror game, cowards! I can totally understand though, hopefully I didn't come across as arguing against your perspective, I think I'm in a similar boat. I will say, from a ~content creation~ perspective, I am not complaining about a Fromsoft game coming out where I will likely put my time into and move on. Blasphemous 2 comes out the day before, and for my tastes and coverage, is more my jam.

I definitely get it from an interest in the developer stretching their wings perspective and I'm glad they're doing it. I think I would just rather them stretch towards deracine like stuff than this, just for my personal tastes. I'm not against it existing or what have you. -GB

Hey this is a late comment, but I'm catching up on the show. It is interesting to see different perceptions of Armored Core 6. I've only played a few Armored Core games, but my perception of the gameplay that I saw at the hands-off event was that this is very much Armored Core mechanically, with some Souls/Sekiro flair filtered through that lens. I'm also not immediately excited by Armored Core (I think Gary and I share a similar perspective), but expect to enjoy the mechanics and build creation of a modern From game, while knowing that the exploration and story won't have the appeal of Souls. But I'm also down for seeing From do a modern take on the more campy and cartoonish characters. Everyone in Armored Core is Patches and you're the world's most famous cleric. I actually kind of feel that the different tones reveal how intentional From is with the tone of each series and what they're setting out to do, which makes me appreciate the storytelling of each more. At the very least, a bit of a palette cleanser before Shadow of the Erdtree comes knocking and its back to esoteric dialogue and the history of the world written on post-it notes.

Prod! Probably uses the word "bitch" too much for my tastes but is generally funny/charming, imo. -GB

What was the YouTuber who you watched doing convergence/other mods? Rewound it but hard to hear. Thanks

Tim Broder

I'd be happy to chat about impressions if I end up picking it up. And who knows, I might be wrong about what it's like. I hope I am, I just think everything points to it being a very different beast than their soulsborne lineage. -GB

I understand your rationale for not doing ACVI but I have to say it will be strange not hearing BFSC cover a FROM game available on the market. I do hope we get a double episode covering thoughts, maybe like the Returnal episode?

That fucking fire giant. This was a huge wall for me on my first playthrough as a strength build. Between his massive damage output and the camera angles I could barely get to his second phase. Not only that but due to the size of the arena and the loss of torrent bringing in other people didn't seem to help much either. Compared to some of the other critical path bosses outside Fire Giant was a ghost town most of the time anyway. My faith build had a much easier time as I had alot more tools in my belt and could fight at distance for the second phase.

Just a quick thing Schenectady is pronounced skuh neck tiddy

I was this years old, whilst searching for the Armorcore episode, that WOFF has one million non-premium episodes that I didn’t know existed outside of this feed My content cup is overflowing onto the floor!

When he rips his foot off and raises it above his head. I thought it looked like he was offering it to his God to give him more strength.

I am notorious for not getting subtle social things. Rani's "critical" lines always sound deeply annoyed and spiteful to me, not joking. But the cadence of Melina's line (indicated in the subtitles by "...") makes it sound like it has two grammatical subjects to me: the world and death. Each of those subjects then has its own predicate: being in need of repair and being indiscriminate. She just drops the "is" in "death is indiscriminate" because that's a quasi-poetic thing that English speakers do. ("Her hair was black, and here eyes blue." "The sun was up and the stock market down.") If Melina wanted death to be indiscriminate, that means she would want it to stop discriminating. Stop killing only some people, some of the time, and start killing everyone all the time. But who are the few who are being killed just some of the time? Then again, just like I don't understand subtle social cues, I have never understood death in this game in particular. The rune of death was locked away and we have to release it? But people die all the time. See: all the bosses (and birds and dogs and rats and Crucible Knights and Nobles and Commoners and Evergaol prisoners, etc.) you kill, all the headless gods in the wandering mausoleums, all the skins of gods worn by the Godskins, all the normies the Dung Eater kills (including our buddy Boggart (sp?)), Lanya of House Hoslow, Vyke's maiden in that church in Liurnia, all of Roderika's friends, every spirit ash you carry around, etc. Furthermore, one thing we know about Melina -- from her "Don't you DARE Three Fingers!" lines -- is that she wants babies to keep being born. If I understand subtle social things -- which I don't -- a desire for babies to be born is typically seen as the opposite of a desire for everyone to be killed. Melina is as capable of being large, of containing multitudes, as the rest of us, I suppose. So that proves nothing. But you know.

Corpse Piler - Is it metal? Hell yeah it sounds like a death metal band

Thank you! I couldn't quite recall and I hadn't re-beat fire giant on this run. He's a real nightmare for my current smashy build. -GB

Hearing about Convergence has me hoping we'd see some neat themed series, like Gary's old runs about whips, bows, and Dragon Brothers.

I get so hype everytime the fire giant offers his leg up. Self sacrifice to the remnants of a dead fire god to gather one last bit of pyromancy power to swat a fly is the best rpg shit to me!

T

Yikes, you're not wrong.

BAAAAAARNES

Small correction, speaking to Melina isn’t the trigger for the Capital of Ash, killing Maliketh is. I don’t know exactly why this is the case, guess Destined Death is like oxygen for Erdtree-related fires

Lucas West

I think good for you guys to realize that the new armored core may not be for you and then deciding not to immediately cover it. I think the game might be cool but it’s good that you guys know where your strengths lie.

Forced into Femininity

If you know British history, "Rivers of Blood" is NOT a cool-sounding name, I should point out
