Bonfireside Chat 269: Roundtable Roundtable Mountaintops

Y'all must have been high when sending in these responses to Mountaintops of the Giants.

Get it, high? Like on a mountain? Because mountains are tall.

Wtf - I just made a post on the Elden Ring lore subreddit about Radagon and Celtic mythology and then threw this episode on in my car, and lo and behold, you guys are talking about the same thing. Here’s my post: There's a god in the Celtic pantheon (Tuatha DΓ© Danann - "the peoples of the goddess Danu") named Lugh that is depicted as being the greatest warrior of all, having red hair, wielding a spear, owning a ferocious magical hound, and who is symbolically associated with the sun. Unbeknownst to him, he is also a grandson of the leader of the enemy of the Celtic gods, Balor of the Fomorians, who just so happens to have a magical, deadly 'evil eye', and is often depicted as a one-eyed giant, and so shares his blood. Balor also disgused himself as a child with red hair in order to steal cattle, in an act that set off a series of events that would eventually lead to Lugh's birth. Anyways, Lugh kills Balor in a battle defending Ireland against Fomorian invasion by throwing his spear, the Gae Assail, an enchanted spear that never misses its mark and always returns to its thrower (the spear is red in colour). Historians date Lugh's entry into the pantheon during a period of transition in Ireland to a more monotheistic formation of basically the same mythology, with Lugh being positioned at the head (he was said to have been equally greatly skilled at every type of art), although this trend towards a local monotheism was cut short by invasion and conquest. One of Lugh's children was, interestingly, mothered by a mortal (rather than a fellow god). This was his son CΓΊ Chulainn, a fearsome warrior of great renown in Celtic mythology and the hero of many stories of his own, also overwhelmingly depicted as possessing his father's red hair, and having the ability to summon incredible strength in battle at the cost of his sanity, losing the ability to distinguish friend from foe. The fits are obviously not perfect, but I think there's enough to chew on there for a bit! I'm by no means an expert on the subject, but I know enough to have picked up on some of these themes in Elden Ring. Here's a final tidbit for kicks: when the Celtic gods arrived in Ireland, they took the land in battle with the Fir Bolg people, slaying their king - Eochaidh. Our boy Elemer of the Briar might have something to say about that lol

Pepsi good

Oh Gary you have wandered into the Soda wars without acknowledging the universal truth. You choose your drink based on the console you are using! Coke for Nintendo, Pepsi for Playstation, and Monster (must be green) for Xbox, yum yum! In a pinch you may also select a Gatorade with the corresponding color but everyone knows gamers NEVER drink water 🌊.

MeltyHam

Yeah, we'll probably do that. Also, feel free to write in beforehand with Charlie Kelly goodness.

Wondering if toward the end of the series there will be a general response episode. I want to talk about my Charlie Kelly build but can't figure out when to send it in!

I'm so glad I wasn't the only one who spent nights trying to work out how to get up to Caria Manor. I was so angry with Iji for hiding behind that illusory wall and not calling to me while I got hit by invisible monk spells

It was cool to hear Jeremy on here again, I was just listening to the Bloodborne season and thinking it would be cool to hear from some of the guests you had on in the first several seasons.

Forced into Femininity

I feel like my first playthrough had a lot of similarities with the points Jeremy mentioned, I distinctly recall running scared through caelid looting, and I too tied with renalla and had some runes, that would've meant a lot at the time, stranded on the moon

Fromaginator

dang forgot to write one about why fire giant is good actually

Thanks boys
