Bonfireside Chat 259: Fortified Manor and Erdtree Sanctuary

We're in set piece country, folks. This is the pre-end game, mid-game, but feels like late game, big name drop extravaganza.

Completely agree 💯

Tha Earthquake

I think Margit/Morgott summoned the shade of his dad to stop us. But more importantly, Gary dropped a Jojo reference! Anime/manga fans cheering right now. Me included.

Tha Earthquake

Gary made a Jojo reference?! To quote Dean Venture, "I need to check the temperature in hell."

I completely agree with you guys about the excellence with which Elden Ring doles out its story and its character arcs, and the "lived in" feeling where you get to talk to them about the world and the various revelations during our journey. This is definitely something From has been trying to get better at with each game. I feel like the Demon's Souls example wasn't the most apt. You _do_ get to talk to Sage Freke, Urbain, all their bozo followers, and even Yuria near the end about all the major revelations in the game, and their opinions about the God / Old One. They're basically still rooted to their beliefs, with Freke especially coming off as kind of an insane person near the end (and weirdly even sexist in his comments about Yuria). Anyway, I could see From trying to do intersecting storylines even as early as DeS, with the opposing factions in the Nexus and the various storylines that play out. Of course, in its grand open-world scale, and simply the length of our journey and the amount of characters we meet, the way Elden Ring does it feel like a successful realization of all those small ideas.

I came here to propose this idea as well. We’ve seen a lot of phantoms, but this is the only gold one we’ve seen, and all of Margot’s weapons and even the wall of light he has summoned to block off the road to the Mountaintops are all a uniquely golden hue. It also makes sense with his motivations to project an image of strength on behalf of the Capital (just like the ghostly banners he has outside the city walls), and even maybe provides some insight into what he wants to be. The people of Leyndel don’t know their lord is an Omen. It’s likely that Morgot not only wished to serve the Erdtree/Golden Order in the way his father did, but maybe always wished his father would be the one to return to take the seat of Elden Lord again. I think he wanted acknowledgement for his dutiful service to the order, and a somewhat happy ending is that Godfrey does acknowledge him before the end.

Thanks for another great episode! Between the alt round table and radagon shenanigans, this area was full of narrative mindfucks for me. Here is another, courtesy of a video I recently watched from The Tarnished Archeologist. Is the Erdtree corporeal at the time of the game? There’s definitely a wooden stump, but the golden tree growing out of it mimics the light of grace, which not everyone can see. And there is a finger reader somewhere around Lindel that seems very excited that you can see the Erdtree. Not sure if this has come up before, but since you’re one of the few people who can see the light of grace and that means that you’re also one of the few people who can still see the Erdtree, it adds some flavor to the faith crises we see characters going through.

I came here to say something similar. I feel this is somewhat supported by the illusion having a similar look to Morgott's other weapon conjuring. In addition to all of this, I also got the impression that the fight is supposed to have more of an intimidation factor rather than be a difficult encounter. Given that this is practically on the doorstep of Morgott's boss fight and the Erdtrees front door, he's probably pulling out all the stops to make anyone getting this far to just turn around.

I'm really proud of Gary for making a JoJo reference despite his severe allergy to anime. The phantoms are basically Stands and I didn't make the connection until he mentioned it here.

I hadn't given this very much thought before but my take is that Phantom Godfrey is a barrier deliberately put in place by Morgott. I feel this both connects to Morgotts desire to prop up the Golden Order by drawing on a figure from its glory days and due to his personal connection to Godfrey as his father. The fact that Godfrey is younger with his full axe here might also reflect this being the version of his father that he remembers prior to being shunted off to the sewers. This would also explain the phatoms weakness as Morgotts previous projections are always weaker than the real deal.

I am both looking forward to and dreading your coverage of the Subterranean shunning grounds that is approaching lol
