Call for WOFF! Dispatch Questions December 2023
Added 2023-12-13 05:32:58 +0000 UTCHello! Here we are again asking for your questions and prompts for WOFF! Dispatch. Please respond by Sunday, December 17 by leaving a comment on this post.
We're looking for two kinds of things:
-Suggestions for our long-form discussion prompt.
-Q&A about the shows, behind the scenes details, and miscellaneous (including off-the-wall and off-topic questions). Ask us about games or other media, life in general... You name it.
One caveat we've given in the past: If the question is too personal or gross, we may dance around it and not give a direct answer.
Looking forward to hearing from you!

I second this question! Also there was a leak of Insomniac info that showed the X-Men property with Playstation exclusivity for the foreseeable future. Shame to think there might only be third person action adventure X-titles for the next decade

2023-12-20 00:23:07 +0000 UTCHave really enjoyed the Mass Effect episodes (as I enjoy all your content to be honest), and just wanted to share my experience with Mass Effect, as someone who is new to the series. I listened to the generalities of the first part, before going off to play the game myself prior to listening to the story sections. I pretty much have to agree with everything said, but the experience I wanted to share was that of the final act, starting on Ilos. I land down, and am treated to a cutscene of Saren walking - WALKING - into what looks like an indoor area. After completing Standard ME Mission: The Hunt For Door Button, I find myself back at that door. Taking my lead from Saren, I saunter on inside. "My, this is a choice to have such an incredibly long trek," I think to myself, "They really much want you to drink in this atmosphere!". Maybe this should have been a clue that I should have traded the 6 legs of my squad for the 6 wheels of the Mako, but no. Story happens, of course, and we find ourselves before a ledge of no return. Again, maybe I should think before jumping down ledges, but hey, I'm chasing Saren here, and 3 second bursts of sprinting is the best way to do it! Down I pop. "My, what a long, empty trench this seems to be!" I think to myself, "They really want you to remember this place, and how much it'll look like Lost Izalith when Dark Souls drops!" I then arrive at the conduit, and the accompanying countdown starts. "Wow, that's tight!" I think. "I bet that convenient story interrupts this countdown - maybe Joker flies in with 10 seconds left to carry us through the portal!" I think we all know what happens next. Fast forward to later that evening, grabbing an old save from 4 hours ago that the cloud mercifully kept, and redownloading Mass Effect after a rage uninstall. (that was longer than I though - feel free to use the TL:DR version of "why on earth is it possible to leave the Mako behind when it's absolutely critical for the conclusion?!?!")

2023-12-18 15:18:29 +0000 UTC(Pronounced “Nikolai”). Maybe mostly for Gary: you mentioned you played midnight suns - any thoughts? Is it the x-com tactics of your dreams? I’ve played it for a couple of months now. It ia definitively too long and the writing is so-so, but the pace of relatively swift battles and talky bits is almost eerily tuned to my busy family life. And bonus question: favorite character in the game?

2023-12-17 21:09:03 +0000 UTCHey guys. I just woke up from a fever dream (I have a cold) where the three of us were involved in a shootout in a connivence store. My body is weirdly sore in all the places I got “hit.” So 2 questions: are y’all okay? And have you ever had these type of after effects carry over from a dream?

2023-12-17 20:00:00 +0000 UTCWe’ve been gaming a long time and have been deeply passionate about it for as long as we’ve been doing it. Can you speak to any predictions you’ve had over the years about the direction of video games? Did you think we’d have fully immersive VR at home by the year 2000? Did you ever think that we were at the peak of graphical fidelity only to be proven wrong a generation later? For me, I’ve been wrong about all of it every time: “This horse armor bullshit is never going to fly” “One day, we are going to have every wall in the room available as screen space to play Donkey Kong Country RPG” Don’t even get me started on how wrong I was about Minecraft haha.

2023-12-17 02:10:35 +0000 UTCHey guys, you probably have been asked this before but what are your thoughts on hitman 3? Did you like it more or less than the previous two games? Any standout maps in your opinions? Thanks!

2023-12-16 21:35:43 +0000 UTCaccidentally hit enter too soon let's try again hi, recent patron going through adaptation decay! I enjoyed the episode on the first Silent Hill film but I was waiting the whole time to hear you bring up the reasoning why the director Cristophe Gans cast a woman as the lead! He said that when playing the first game, which this adapts, "you can see that the characters behave more like women than like men. They are worried about the child, they are very sensitive and often cry." I always found this hilarious and baffling. Do men in his world not worry about their children and freak out when bewildering and horrible things happen to them? What would a Silent Hill with a Harry who "behaves more like a man" even be like? Is he imagining a Liam Neeson in Taken situation? ...probably wouldn't be any worse than Silent Hill Ascension tbh

2023-12-16 20:32:09 +0000 UTCIf you were in a horror movie, which character type would you be? Comic relief, person caught having sex and killed off early, or the killer? Or perhaps all that prep from Unfilmable and survival horror games pays off and you’re the final girl? Bonus points for including how you would kill/die/survive and for including Gwen and others from the Duckfeed network.

2023-12-16 17:56:47 +0000 UTCHey, I don't know if I missed an episode on the Days of Future Podcast or something but did either of you guys play the Marvel Midnight Suns game from the XCOM devs? It's very different but so so good! There's weird "dating sim" ass parts though, which were initially off-putting but I've grown to like them, as a marvel fan. Like, going on a picnic date with Blade to talk about his crush on Captain Marvel sounds dumb as hell on paper but I am eating this shit up lol. I wonder if this is how weebs are with those Persona games? I got the deluxe edition with all the dlc included for like 30 bucks in a ps4 sale recently. I recommend picking it up if u can

2023-12-16 16:44:37 +0000 UTCA lot of people have asked if you fine folks have played or plan on playing some of the popular soulslikes that have recently released. I personally wrote off Lies of P as off-brand bloodborne on first blush, the game quickly became my favorite release of the year, and a huge unexpected hit for the genre. While it might not satisfy that obtuse sense of discovery that Dark Souls is known for, I found that the actual moment to moment gameplay is up there with my favorite titles put forward by FromSoft. I also found the much more straightforward story is still very satisfying, despite the ridiculous premise of the game. I would imagine that it’s hard to make time for new games these days, but do you plan on giving this one a shot? All we are saying is give P a chance ;)

2023-12-15 21:45:44 +0000 UTCWhen asked what my favorite video game of all time is, I answer “the Mass Effect Trilogy.” And I really do love all three games, though I acknowledge that 2 is the series high point. Part of this affection comes from my love of Star Wars. I bought an original XBox to play KotoR, and, being a console gamer, I only knew Bioware as the studio behind KotoR. Years later, when I walked into a Game Stop and saw pulp sci-fi cover art for a game by Bioware, I knew exactly what I was in for and bought Mass Effect without knowing anything else about it. Mass Effect 1 in particular is special to me because it introduced a sense of consequence and permanence to games that I’d never experienced before, and I’ll always love it for that. I know the permanent loss of a party member had happened before in games; I’d even experienced it personally when I played Final Fantasy VII. But it had never happened before by my hand. When presented with the [Shoot Wrex] option on Virmire, I froze. Then I selected it, not knowing what I’d EXPECTED to happen when my Paragon Shepard blew away my favorite companion! Why did I do that?! I can only guess it’s because I’d never experienced a game that gave me that kind of option, that kind of consequence for my choices. I immediately reloaded a previous save to spare Wrex, but I resolved to accept whatever consequences came my way from that point. I spent the rest of ME1 - and the trilogy - dreading what might happen to this cast of characters I’d come to care about as much as any fellowship in any story I’ve experienced. On a separate note: Thank you both for covering ME1, and I SINCERELY hope you will play the other two at some point in the future. I’ve listened to Duckfeed content long enough to know Mass Effect wouldn’t escape without some scathing commentary - especially regarding the lack of moral nuance in the choices presented in the game and the repetitive gameplay. But as more CRPGs release on consoles - both old and new - I’m excited to play the games like Disco Elysium et al that you feel succeed more effectively at the aspects of the Mass Effect Trilogy that I love so much. I’d love to know y’all’s list of those games! I already know Disco is on that list. I’d imagine Witcher 3 is, too, but I’m reading the novels before I play it. What RPGs do you recommend that have profound narrative consequences for player choice?

2023-12-15 19:43:17 +0000 UTCI really enjoyed your Mass Effect episodes this month! A couple thoughts I thought I'd share: I didn't play games very much growing up, the Mass Effect series was one of the first "modern" games I played. At the time, they blew my mind; I hadn't really played anything like it. I have tried revisiting them since, and found they no longer suit my tastes and that they're (specifically ME1) riddled with the many issues you discussed on the show. Still, I have a lot of affection and nostalgia for the series, as one of my introductory game experiences. I did want to mention one thing that I didn't hear Kole mention about the motivation of the Reaper's that I think makes them a little more compelling. *Spoilers for ME3* In one of the third game's DLCs you meet a long-lost members of the race that created the Reapers, a big cuttlefish looking guy. Essentially, the Reapers are the creations of an Artificial Intelligence that this ancient race created. The AI was given the mandate to "preserve life at any cost." The AI escalated out of control, killing its creators and fashioning machines in their image. It seemingly calculated that a systematic annihilation and re-seeding of life in the galaxy was the mathematically optimal way to "preserve life," assuming that advanced species would devolve into inter-galactic conflict and bloodshed, and that young biological races had a lower capacity for harm.

2023-12-15 06:22:07 +0000 UTCLife Question: I was walking into my synagogue for Hanukkah only to look to my left and see the girl who I was head-over-heels in love with in high school. We had dated for about 2 months at age 15 before she (wisely) friend-zoned me and broke my poor hormone-saturated teenage brain. Here I am almost 30 years later and finding it interesting that I’ll now be running into her now and again and being forced to think about that time in my life. Just curious if you’ve ever had a blast from the past (romantic or otherwise) and how you felt about it.

2023-12-14 23:57:12 +0000 UTCHey guys! First: I wanted to say that as a butch lesbian from a conservative part of the country, I loved Mass Effect b/c it let me be queer and open about it for the first time I was able to without being picked on -- and let me tell you, when I grew up it was a fucking shock to realize people were taking the series seriously, lol. I thought it was a goofy over the top mess, and that was why I liked it! But I agree w/ Gary on a lot of things about Mass Effect 1, now: good lord, it was important at the time, but... wowwwwww that first one is a collection of angles jammed together! That was also my biggest disappointment with ME2. They basically removed actual queer romance, and though I love that game it looms large. Second: What's the game that you guys have gotten the most requests to play the sequel for? I know you guys covered the initial Dead Space, and that probably came with the demand for a sequel -- but you've done some other games with either literal or spiritual sequels, and I'm just curious about if there's ever been a big influx of demand for like... Doom Eternal ( after it came out / before you covered it), Crysis 2/3, any of the other Metal Gear Solid Games, that Stanley Parable remix, Inquisition, F&H Termina (even tho you guys don't want to play the first game for a reason I think is understandble, I know that Termina has a MASSIVE decrease in the SA stuff and people may have wanted yall to check it out b/c of that), Brutal Legend, so on and so forth. Sorry for the long question, guys. I've been a Patron for YEARS now, by the way! Ya'll kick ass.

2023-12-14 21:53:58 +0000 UTCI posted another question, but decided it was too long. Take 2, the McElroys Have been doing a weekly stream where they've played through super mario world, dk country, and now crash bandicoot 2 while splitting the controls across the three of them, i.e. one jumps, one walks, one does fireball/sprint, etc. Would any of the duckfeed folk consider doing a challenge run like this for a duckfest or as a one off? I think the wild energy of a Gary+Kole+Will podcast put under the pressure of the challenge could potentially create a flawless diamond.

2023-12-14 19:38:18 +0000 UTCDo you guys have any favorite fan-made content for a game? I know you both like some Souls mods (like the randomizer) but can't recall anything else. Some of my favorite gaming experiences are playing custom maps for Celeste and Super Mario World, new characters in Slay the Spire, unofficial expansions for Factorio, etc.

2023-12-14 19:29:00 +0000 UTCHave you ever had a specific smell or taste become inextricably linked to a certain game? My time spent playing Fallout 3 was in my older brother's freshly decorated bedroom on his 360 and now I can't smell emulsion paint without being transported to the Capital Wasteland and I was really into burning incense as a stoned teenager my first time traversing Anor Londo, so much so that the smell of nag champa triggers Ornstein & Smough flashbacks etc.

2023-12-14 17:19:52 +0000 UTCHey guys! Long time fan, new patron here. First off, I want it known that I really miss the opening skits. They weren't all bangers, but it was often a way for me to engage with an episode when I didn't know anything about the game going in. Have you ever thought about bringing it back, maybe for the exclusive episode each month? Consider it next time you find yourselves in the deliberation room. Oh, and Finally Fantasy 8 should be the next one you guys cover

2023-12-14 09:28:49 +0000 UTCG'day. Suggestion for topic: Input Reading in Soulslikes. I have started playing Lies of P, and I must say I am impressed. It is very slick in the hands and the developers have really made a magnificent game. While I have some criticisms, the thing I dislike the most that it has brought over from Dark Souls and Elden ring is input reading; the automatic reaction to a player pressing a button (attack, estus use etc). I feel input reading is anathema to souls combat. No where was it more egregious than Elden Ring. Often you will hear fans of these games say that it is 'fair', and that the game 'rewards' you for patience and strategy, and I must agree 90% of the time. But I feel input reading betrays this core concept of soulslikes. Often in these games (and Lies of P), you will learn an enemy move set, however those move sets will iterate or 'bank up' combos if you press a button. This becomes frustrating as certain weapon types or play styles will be at a disadvantage. The time you have to attack after a move is an opportunity to deal damage, and due to input reading all of your strategy and learning of enemy move sets can become redundant. Think you know that 2 hit combo perfectly? Well you do, until you press attack at the end of a combo and a surprise third retaliation attack is chained together. I understand this might be an 'AI' thing, but i've played enough of these games to know that enemy attacks do not have to be based upon your input. How do you, or the wider community feel about input reading? Is this simply another 'strategy' you have to learn?

2023-12-14 05:16:00 +0000 UTCHey guys, long time first time. I’d love to hear about your respective histories with Magic: the Gathering (or CCG’s in general). I had always been hesitant to get into the physical game because of the cost of needing to be up on whatever new set was coming…but then they leaned into the Universes Beyond releases this year with Lord of the Rings and Doctor Who sets. I think they did an excellent job of bringing the flavor of those properties to the mechanics of Magic. My wife had never touched Magic, but loves LotR and Dr Who, and this turned out to be the perfect intro for helping her understand how the game played. It’s now one of our go-to pub games.

2023-12-14 03:54:01 +0000 UTCWhat is the worst Christmas song? Being it’s annoying or what it contains. I just heard about a song this year that came out in 1975 by Linda Bennett called, It’s an Old Fashioned Christmas (Daddy’s Home) A song that contains a family hearing news of the bus that the father rides home from work each night getting into a crash where all occupants are killed. It’s a song sure to bring out the Christmas spirit!

2023-12-14 03:47:48 +0000 UTCHi-Diddly-Ho there! My wife recently contracted the latest strain of COVID and she's using the time to get into Hollow Knight. It got me thinking of all the media I've used to get me through times of unhealth. When I was sick as a kid, it meant I got to watch The Price is Right. Now that I'm an adult.... I still get to watch Price is Right, but I also get caught up on some reading, a show, or a game I've been putting off. When I was separated from my wife, my habits changed greatly -- as they should have -- I found a good friend who came by once a week to check in on me and we played through Enter the Gungeon together. Through frustration and a bit of tears on my own part, we were able to beat the Dragun a few times. My wife and I have reconciled and I still have Enter the Gungeon to enjoy because those of those many bittersweet moments shared with a friend. What media have you turned to in the past and what do you turn to nowadays when you are in unhealth -- either mental or physical? Thanks for the show!

2023-12-14 03:39:27 +0000 UTCGreetings. I was wondering if either of you had heard of or played a game called "World Of Horror", it's an HP lovecraft (of course) and Junji Ito inspired run based CRPG kind of game. I just happened across a video of it recently, and it's sort of an old CRPG 2-bit (Apple IIe) styled game, you're trying to solve mysteries with fun alliterative names like "The Horrible History of Household Hell" or "The Rotten Report of Rancid Ramen" or something like that. The art and aesthetics are pretty interesting in my opinion, and I like the vibe of what I've seen and it has a turn-based battle system with little button interface kind of like an old Eye of The Beholder or similar D&D RPG from the early 80s or so, but I haven't played it. Since I know you're both at least somewhat interested in those things I just wondered if you'd heard about it or checked it out.

2023-12-14 02:31:55 +0000 UTCHello! Since you've covered Bethesda games in the past and generally enjoyed them, I was curious if you've played Starfield? If so, what were your thoughts? Understandable if you haven't got around to playing it, what with games like Baldur's Gate 3 coming out and playing games for the show. While I greatly enjoyed my time with Starfield, it definitely felt like one step forward, two steps back for Bethesda. Things like the writing have generally improved (not in all cases though), but other things, like exploration, had a massive regression. It honestly boggles my mind how badly they bungled this key aspect of their gameplay. Most of the environmental storytelling Bethesda is known for was completely erased. Further proof (in my mind) that procedural generation doesn't work.

I know you’ve talked about it before but can y’all just talk some sugar about that good ass Delta Green. P.S. much of the new (post 2016) delta green content has been top of the pops in regards to Mythos content and adventure/ horror design.

2023-12-13 19:38:13 +0000 UTCHey Kole, as someone who also lives with ADHD, any advice on how to start a new project or skill AND maintain it? I’ve had to slowly pace myself into a healthy routine through medication and exercise, which have helped tremendously, but paired with a full-time job I’m typically wiped and unable to try new things or pursue art at the end of the day without ducking up my sleep schedule. But the free time I do have is spent on me just vibing back into a state of rest. I don’t want to over-exhaust myself.

2023-12-13 17:23:50 +0000 UTCSuggestion for a topic: darkness in games (in terms of tone). Obviously there's a ton of affection for horror on this network, but I think it'd make for an interesting discussion to explore the line between cool-dark and grim-dark. When does it become dark for its own sake instead of to make an interesting or scary point?

2023-12-13 16:08:56 +0000 UTCI have not yet listened to the Mass Effect episodes, but when I heard that you were doing it, and it was only the FIRST one, my heart kinda sank. Mass Effect is actually a terrible game; it's saving grace was the foundation is built of course, a whole new universe, but as a game, blech. ME2 is a different story and better, and ME3 is, in my opinion one of the few great games of that era. My condolences for having to do the worst of the series. BUT, that's just a preamble to this preamble of my actual question: I get a severe melancholy when I think about Bioware and what they've become. This was a scrappy little company that produced some of the most well-loved games of a generation and seemed to have a real future, but after EA's acquisition and a torturous dismantling, they're essentially dead at this point. Another example of this is trying to rewatch some sitcoms that are artifacts of their time; something like Brooklyn 99 -- woke cops and Samberg antics. I remember watching and really quite liking it in the 2010s, but after trying to rewatch recently it proved depressing; watching a relic of a more optimistic time, knowing what its become. This particular example is doubly important today as I write this, the day after the core of that show, the great Andre Braugher, died at 61. Being part of something that seemed like it was going to last, and watching it spiral into irrelevance... This is over long anyway, perhaps a topic? Are there any properties, movements, or even times of your life that you look back on with melancholy, that you wanted to turn out better, that you wanted a different end to their story? Any tips on reconciling these feelings (if they exist)?

2023-12-13 15:26:09 +0000 UTCHow do you handle the come down after playing an all-timer game? I finally got around to Disco Elysium recently and it more than lived up to the hype. But now, nothing I'm playing feels like it measures up. It doesn't feel fair to a game like Sea of Stars, which itself is a lovely throwback RPG, but I feel like I'm unfairly grading it on a curve because it doesn't have nearly the same quality of writing, nor the gameplay systems needed to support said writing. Any tips on recalibrating after my bender in Martinaise?

2023-12-13 11:26:28 +0000 UTCHey guys! Regarding the elevator rides and Gary not getting the conversations. I think this is due to the Legendary Edition being played on newer hardware and therefore not lasting as long. I know you played on P.C., so if you were on an SSD it’s likely the rides took just a few seconds vs the actual minutes that it took on 360. I notriced this while playing the remaster on my PS5. I also noticed my playtime was probably 10-15 hours shorter despite getting the platinum. Hope you guys get around to playing ME2 someday and I hope Gary likes it more! Best, Sean

2023-12-13 11:06:37 +0000 UTCHey Gary and Cole, long time listener, first time caller! I've been listening since your DS2 coverage, and am excited for but also hesitant about Real Lich Hours. This is the first time you're covering a game that I'm interested in but haven't started yet (hopefully a small discount during the Steam winter sale will push me over the edge to buy it). How much should i worry about spoilers once the actual RLH episodes start releasing? Are they going to be split up into spoiler free parts and spoilery parts? Should i just wait until i start the game to listen if I'm worried about spoilers?

2023-12-13 08:06:28 +0000 UTCDo either of you have any video game dialogue "routines" you go through with your friends (or maybe just in your own head)? My friend and I both got into RE4 around the same time in high school, and sometimes we'll just jump into the Krauser Leon knife fight dialogue from RE4 OG unprompted. One of us just has to say something like "I died in a crash two years ago. Is that what they told you?" and we're off. Obviously, it's pretty dorky, but video game dialogue is often so surreal and inhuman that it'll stick in your head.

2023-12-13 08:03:39 +0000 UTCAre there any quality of life improvements that are currently either rare or non-existent that you would like to see implemented universally in games? I love that being able to skip and pause cut scenes is now pretty much standard, but I'd also love if they had a rewind button.

2023-12-13 06:40:41 +0000 UTCHey guys, big dog here. Are there any games you've done a 180 on? The first time I played BG3, I just couldn't get into it. After some prodding by a buddy I tried it again and am really enjoying it. Conversely, any games you remember loving that just do not hold up after a recent playthrough?

2023-12-13 06:39:21 +0000 UTCHey guys, first time writing in. Just want to make a quick comment that you don't have to read out if you end up answering this, but I just want to thank you two for being so thoughtful and empathetic towards the LGBT community. I'm a gay cis man and even though I have a lot of privileges as a male in our society I've always struggled with my queerness, even as it pertains to 'gamers' and not feeling like I fit in. With the horrific slurs thrown so casually to the constant mockery of all things 'non-masculine' throughout my time with gaming and gamers it was hard for me to see it as an escape. But luckily times have changed (sort of) and the world of games and the people playing them is at least a little nicer to be a part of. Appreciate the both of you very much. Now unrelated question: I feel like I've heard you two briefly mention rhythm games before and I'm curious if you two consider yourselves a fan of the genre. Did you get your start from games like Parappa, or were you ever into the Bemani rhythm games such as DDR or Beatmania? If not, what kind of rhythm games were you playing? Any current ones that you are playing these days?

2023-12-13 06:24:26 +0000 UTCThere was a discussion in the slack where the idea of life circumstances can help shape game tastes. A relevant example: I divorced in 2016 and was living in a place I couldn’t really afford alone and was in a bad place psychologically. I had purchased Bloodborne at launch for SOMETHING to play on the PS4 but bounced off hard: I’d tried Demon Souls and Dark Souls the first but just didn’t get it. For some reason though I became heavily invested in Bloodborne and, because I was just in the right place to grind against it until it clicked, I ended up playing it obsessively. It’s my favorite game of all time and is not only my single platinum trophy, it left me hungry for more of the same. Which led me back to Dark Souls, which led me to Scholar, which led me to look for more souls media, which led me to BSC and eventually Patreon. Point is, because circumstances in my life allowed me the mental capacity to finally “get” Souls, my tastes in games was irrevocably shifted and it informs my purchases and perspective on game to this day. Do either of you folks have a similar story? What games (other than Souls, I think we can all see where that took you) had a lasting impact on your life, and how did your place in the world at the time impact that? Love all the shows, love the community, big ups to you two. Thanks so much

2023-12-13 06:14:19 +0000 UTCI said this before but is there someway we can maybe follow along with your characters visually in Real Lich Hours? I know it’s more work for you guys but maybe like… one per act? And another at the end? lol just realized we never got this for your elden ring dudes and I just like to ask what build/class a person is in the same way people ask about horoscopes. Gives me insight.

2023-12-13 06:01:47 +0000 UTCTop 2-3 songs from other games you guys would want inserted into an Elden Ring DLC? Preferably level/area/zone music. Also water check!! Much love to you guys!
