Real Lich Hours 1: The Nautiloid

In which we begin our journey, which we did not consent to. But does one every really consent to journeys?

This episode inspired my next playthrough as a Rogue named Naughty Loyd.

She has it! You have to go into the spell book and prepare it!

You picked a complex one but you don't have to engage with as much as it seems. Hopefully you enjoyed it. In the last generation or so, I was impressed with Wasteland 3 as a game that I'd recommend as a first cRPG. Not dumbed down and has pretty much all the elements but its not super complex or long and even the dialogue is snappy and to the point, while still being good and having interesting flavor. The factions in particular stuck with me as there's a faction of Monster Mash guys, a faction of Ronald Reagan death robots, a faction of the guys on the cover of Sleep's Dopesmoker, among others. I didn't like Wasteland 2 either so I was surprised by it.

Not sure if anyone will ever see this, but I was waiting for this game to be officially complete so I am finally just starting it. Absolutely loving the show and magazine esque format. I think its proving to be perfect for a systems heavy game, and better than trying to discuss all the systems up front in the usual WOFF format. Would not mind them revisiting Deus Ex 1 this way... But just wanted to say that at least in the current version, Shadowheart does not have Command so that isn't an option unless your Tav has it. Assuming that was patched in some way. Thanks for the show. Listening as I play Tactician on the first run and its been fun and helpful to both gameplay and my greater DnD knowledge.

Drew

My first crpg and man this game is intimidating. I decided to be a black dwarf barbarian, and didn't even bother to ask questions to the brain I just squished it

Justin Schmidt

I decided to pick up the game so I could listen to this as I played. I guess I should have listened first cuz I killed that lil man😭😭. No cat buddy for me

Mac Buell

Thrash the mini-boss with their own weapon while they slap fight! In terms of game economy, instead of waiting for loot as a reward, you can eat dessert first. Really great.

Joseph

I'm 90% sure they patched in them picking them up, but also, if you pick them up, that's basically curtains for them, and I'm pretty sure it's a free action!

Duckfeed.tv

I find that enemies do pick up weapons I've commanded them to drop, but not if I pick up their weapons first!

Joseph

I commanded Anders to drop his sword - he picked it back up very quickly!

Alex Hawkins

Omg excellent I’m very excited for this

Deanna Kerry

Love the format you guys went with for this!

Having only 12 levels to work with makes multiclassing a less inticing proposition than in tabletop 5e. But a few multi combos remain extremly powerful. Fighter/Rogue is great, especially if you go with battlemaster and take the "feinting attack" maneuver which gives you advantage thus allowing you to use sneak attack. Plus, Expertise is always useful. Paladin/Warlock is extremly good. If you chose Pact of the Blade you effectively make your spellcasting AND attack stat just Charisma allowing you to have more freedom in stat choices or taking feats. The real big thing is getting spell slots back on a short rest, which means more Smites per day and Smite (especially in 5e) is POWERFUL. Those are kinda the poster children for 5e's multiclassing and still hold value in BG3 level range.

Glad to hear this baby get started. It was interesting to see what kind of limitations they made character-wise, I attempted to recreate as best I could my warlock from playing 5e a while ago, I wasn't quite able to replicate him 100% but close enough and it will be interesting to see what might be different as I continue to level. I totally saved "Us" and they hung around for the main tutorial, but they just seemed to disappear? I don't know/remember if they actually got killed on the bridge while trying to go to the controls before the crash but once my character woke up on the beach they weren't there anymore and so I assumed it was just a thing for the intro/tutorial? I wonder if that means I'm in the same boat as Kole and wonder if they'll show up again in a later act, if not I guess then that's for a 2nd playthrough, and whatever you two talk about as you continue on. Excited to hear more eps, agree with everyone else on the format and the other compliments!

Hey guys Love the network and I'm excited for the weekly RLH episodes going forward! I had an interesting first experience with BG3 and wanted to share it with y'all So on payday a couple of months ago I downloaded the game and ordered some food before sitting down to play it alongside my wife Maybe 30ish minutes of character creation later I get control of my first (of many) Dragonborn PC's, and tickle my way past the first sphincter door I stop for a second to take a sip of water, and just then a creepy children of the corn ass voice loudly whispers "WE'RE HEEEERE..." My wife and I (and our 4 dogs) freeze and, as we share a concerned and frightened glance, there are two soft knocks at the front door Needless to say my Shih-Tzus went absolutely ape-shih and my wife and I jumped up thinking we're in a horror movie I grab my phone to check the doorbell camera and see... the pizza guy is here -_- We had a good laugh in the end but I still got revenge on US with a thumbotomy Anyway happy holidays guys! thanks for helping me stay sane during the Christmas rush

Hey y'all! Super excited for this series! Just a short technical note before anything else, the little chime sound effect for the Sage Advice might be a touch too loud? It could very well be a me problem but for whatever reason the exact tone kinda hits the ears a little harder than the sounds around it. General comment: BG3 was a refreshing take on a genre I get tired of very quickly. Unlike Gary, I am not a tactician and turn based combat which can go wrong very quickly ended up in wasted time redoing fights in other game systems before it. That said, my first playthough was such an oustanding joy thanks to the freedoms Larian allowed. I befriended and betrayed my way into places I had no right to be in constantly. I rat-fucked everyone who was kinda rude to me and the game allowed me to just turn on people when it was convenient for me to do so. I am told that my pre-patch 5 playthrough where I got Karlach and Minthara in one go is something of an anomaly. Again, super exited for this series and I love the format you've chosen. It's like Monster in my Podcast all over again, which I loved!

Matthew Woodyard

It really bugged me, I was near the end of act 2 when I found out you could click during the animation and skip it.

Hey Guys, just wanted to toss in a cool fact about Mindflayers in 5e, specifically relating to gnomes. Gnomes actually have a unique reaction to the ceremorphosis process, different from other species, resulting in death of both the host and the tadpole if attempted. There is a modified vesion of the process, that if successful, allows the gnome to actually retain most of their, memories, personality and individuality, becoming a gnome ceremorph. In a non-successful outcome of the modified process they become a squidling, which is a sort of stunted and malformed illithid creature, with none of the benefits that becoming an illithid might entail. My character in my groups first 5e campaign, a gnome Great Old One Warlock, successfully completed the transformation, and it made for a pretty interesting campaign. Edit: this may be present in other iterations of DnD, 5e was just where I personally became aware of it

Grimnir

Love the show so far. What do you guys think about the fact that you can bring all companions along? I kinda wish you would leave those that are not in your party behind, like in BG1 or Divinity Original Sin 2. To me that would make multiple playthroughs more distinct. The way it is now, my character tends to try and help all his friends, meaning that I already did all companion quests in one go and shuffle around companions (even though I did try to role play).

What’s your opinion about the dice rolling animation? It’s certainly a charming touch and can really emphasize a major hinge point at times. But through my 70-hour playthrough there were a few times where I thought I could do without the pop up and the precious seconds it wasted. Small nitpick for sure, but what’s a letters section without them. Great new pod, loving the format.

Naveen Sivakumar

And this is when I discovered the weirdo I killed for OBVIOUSLY being a trap was actually a major character. 🙃

Matt Bixler! Hello!

Loving the show so far and mixing up the format a little. The theme song absolutely slaps.

Aaron

The first encounter with Us is an incredible example of how differently players can experience the game. I saved them and had them as a companion, one of my friends killed them, and one of my friends totally skipped talking to them and had no idea what the other two were talking about. The depth and breadth of detail in this game with seemingly minor side characters is one of the reasons why I love it so much.

Patrick Swearingen

OH my god. How wonderful this is. So this is gonna be a long comment, if you read it on the show, PLEASE cut it down like in BSC... The theme song makes my heart happy. It is a truly joyous little tune that is so appropriate to a podcast, a magazine showlet, and Forgotten Realms and i just feel good whenever i hear the beginning and end. Expect a cover sometime in the next year or so. ;) The format of this show is stellar, the table of contents is *brilliant* hats off to whoever came up with that as for someone like me, and people who i'd show this show to, who are new to Baldur's Gate and Dnd, breaking down what's coming and like telegraphing what you're going to do is really good for finding our footwork as listeners. It's also just great to have these segments, it's a more serious monster in my podcast from the few episodes of that i've gleamed, and just a lot of fun. Starting off this fantasy epic with Dragons attacking a Squid Spaceship as it jumps dimensions was a fantastic choice as an introduction because it shatters any expectation of what could happen in this setting. Any preconceived notions are dashed, at least they were for me. The beginning gameplay on the Nautiloid felt REALLY shockingly similar to the beginning of DC: Online the MMO one Brainiac's ship. Everybody in pods, getting powers, after going through character creation? It's just a very odd 1 to 1. I highly recommend looking at the beginning of that game, just to see. All in all a wonderful start to a wonderful game, I think it's worth noting that the two starting companions you get here are women and really cool and strong ones at that, not in a horny muscle mommy kinda way but in a just putting good characters that have agency and power in the world and writing them as women. It's awesome. And also a wonderful start to the show, ecstatic for the ride. I gave a really big first response cause like when a homie makes a new album, we give notes, on the singles, high points, low points, and you guys aren't homies but i really respect you guys and how you work. And just wanted to share my thoughts. There are no low points here.

I look forward to hearing all about the adventures of Naughty Loyd

Lyall Haynes

Bon voyage fellas.

I think capping the max level to 12, combined with the way 5e behaves differently in a video game context, kinda takes the wind out of the sails of multiclassing. I have only ever not multiclassed in tabletop twice; to me, classes often stop getting more interesting at level 5 - they just get better at the stuff they already do. But when you've only got 12 levels instead of 20, that trade off gets way more severe. That said, my wife took first level fighter and the rest in wizard, which let her wear heavy armor and do action surge fireballs, which was rad AF.

Chapel Collins

Oh man, here we go.

Joe Binson

Excited for this podcast! Bonfireside Chat definitely made me go back to Elden Ring with fresh eyes, and I'm hoping RLH will do something similar and rekindle my enthusiasm for BG3 (I burned out near the end of Act 2 and haven't gone back to it for a couple months).

Eldon Hill

One of the hosts said ‘stanima’ in 2013 and I still haven’t heard an official apology

Rolled a new character for this; a bard named Dingus (the g is silent)
