Call and Response: WOFF! Dispatch September 2023

Hello! The purpose of this post is to call for your questions and prompts for WOFF! Dispatch. Please respond by Tuesday, September 19th by leaving a comment on this post.

We're looking for two kinds of things:
-Suggestions for our long-form discussion prompt.
-Q&A about the shows, behind the scenes details, and miscellaneous (including off-the-wall and off-topic questions).

Ask us about games or other media, life in general... You name it.

One caveat we've given in the past: If the question is too personal or gross, we may dance around it and not give a direct answer.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Do you have any formative video game memories from early childhood? I watched my cousin play Resident Evil on the PS1 when I was 5 and had nightmares for about 7 years. I even led a prayer at a family gathering that ended with “and please help me stop dreaming about Stephen’s Scary Video Game”. God ignored that prayer so hard that, not only did I stop believing in him, I still can’t get through Resident Evil 1 to this day. Thanks for making me a yellow-bellied heathen, Capcom!

What a great interview, I know you guys are not asking me, but something I’ve always wanted from Elden ring was magic that could also be used as mobility like in a Metroid Vania. Something I didn’t even realize it was a MetroidVania thing until recently. To harkens back to MegaMan X, 2 specifically, imagine, if say, when you cast an ice spell, that spell freezes the opponent and you could jump off of them or instead of having torrent you have a super jump or can double jump. A fire dash that counts as an attack and a dash in midair. I’d LOVE that. Like we’re fighting gods in this game we should be able to move like one.

Something that I appreciate about you both is that you have always been open and honest about your gastrointestinal issues. I think that, in turn, this has helped me be more honest and straightforward with my doctor in regard to my own GI issues. Anyway, I just recently got diagnosed with celiac disease -- please, hold your applause -- and even though celiac is a somewhat uncommon malady, I just wanted to encourage anyone else who is feeling like [Joe Jack voice] "things just ain't comin' out right, honey," or who deals with low iron or B12 levels, general fatigue and mysterious aches, etc. to get the relevant bloodwork done, just to make sure. Turns out I've been gluten intolerant my entire life, but I went 42 years without knowing and suffered needlessly as a result. While I'll be missing out on a few things going forward -- to co-opt a body-negative expression -- "Nothing tastes as good as solid bowel movements feel." Anyway, thank you both again for being open and honest about your GI health. Wishing you and the whole Duckfeed family peaceful guts.

When you read listener questions, do you conjure an image of the listener as you read the question? Or are we all witness protection program silhouettes? (It's okay if you picture a white dude chugging a red bull and punching drywall when you read my name. Only 66% incorrect, but that's close enough.)

What do you all think of tabletop adventure modules? Do you have any favorites that you've read or run? Have you ever thought of doing a Monsters in My Podcast style fast and loose look at them? With the Old School Revival still rocking on there's a ton of fun and wild adventures out there many of them in that 32 page or less range.

Potential discussion topic: Sidequests. I think one of my favorite things to do in video games is finding and completing sidequests. I just love getting a line from a random NPC or stumbling on something in the world that takes me on a story that is completely disconnected from the main story. I think a couple of my favorites are A Towerful of Mice from The Witcher 3 where you explore a spooky island to learn about a really cool ghost story, and Investigate the Circus Tent from Baldur's Gate 2 where almost immediate after the tutorial you can enter a circus tent with some bizarre stuff going on inside. What games do you think really nail these? What are some of your favorites? What separates the good ones from the bad ones?

MisterMundus

Can you just talk about Baldur's Gate 3 for 4 minutes?

Potential topics discussion: Game length. With two kids under 7 my time for games is limited, so I find myself being extremely conscious of a game’s length, and more importantly, when the length seems to be unjustified, full of padding, etc. Curious to hear your thoughts on how games best balance length with content.

Obviously a lot of fans have their own favorite WOFFs…I know I do. Are there episodes you look back on fondly that stick out in your mind as having been particularly fun to record?

Jack Corrigan

I'm a big Earthbound fan and I love when you reference the game here in there on your shows! I first played the game when I was 9 or so and it's been a giant source of nostalgia and joy for me. And 30 years later, I bought the SNES Mini specifically to play it. So..... if you had to live in any location in Earthbound, where would it be? Also who is your favorite character or enemy and why is it Poo? heehee

Troy Sand

The Shithead Genie visits you again! Would you rather: A) Be able to fly, but the entire time you are flying you rip a continuous loud, rancid fart B) Be able to understand and speak (not write) every language known to man, but while tapping into this power you experience an intense, leg-shaking orgasm for the duration of its use (would not happen for English)

Let's say the patreon does well enough that you can each hire a personal assistant, but for some reason (maybe a goblin's curse?) You have to hire a video game character. Who would it be?

Tom Healey

Hey guys, any possibility of using the new Patreon Spotify Integration feature to get the premium feed available in Spotify-land? It'd be really handy to have all of the feeds in one place, unless it's a huge pain in the ass to set up/maintain on your end. Thanks!

In honor of BG3, I’d love to hear your thoughts on save scumming. What is your threshold for reloading a save? Does quicksave ever bother you as an attractive nuisance? What older games have become significantly better through save scumming on emulators? For me, I really wanted to roll with the punches in BG3, but frankly there are just too many ways to fuck up. Even friendly characters are shockingly eager to fight me to the death. Like, I accidentally threw the ball AT the dog and I guess that means one of us has to die. With no option to talk people down mid-combat, I just quicksave before each conversation. Conversely, in disco elysium, I don’t think I ever reloaded a save. That said, it’s a failsafe that makes me enjoy BG3 a lot more. I don’t need to be married to any given mistake, I can roll with the failures that feel right to me, and the developers have wiggle room on offering creative choices with unexpected consequences. I honestly wish this feature was standard practice in all games, as it lets me decide what is and isn’t a failstate. What are your thoughts?

Jules Everson

What are your thoughts on the homogeneity of gaming platforms and hardware? We’re a long way from the days when the consoles and PCs had distinct libraries due to varying capabilities and different input devices. Nowadays the experience is 90% the same regardless of platform, and while it’s great that we all can play the same games, it does feel like something was lost from the days when a game was designed to the strengths of a specific platform. Is there anything you miss from the old days where CD quality sound or dual screens made for unique experiences?

Naveen Sivakumar

I personally want to thank you, Kole and Gary, for covering the absolute fuck-up that is Doom Eternal. It's actually a kind of amazing encapsulation of what happens when the people with talent leave between sequels. All the self-aware mockery of the LORE and story? Gone. The fun of using different weapons and great combat pace? Straight-up defenestrated by making every weapon a key to an enemy and punishing you for not playing how the game demands you play (distilled into the hateful fuckery that is the Marauder). I hope you guys like it (as of this writing the WOFF has not dropped, so I don't know), but I fucking HATED my time with this game and how it made everything gtlreat about Doom 2016 feel like a fluke, but I still have that game, and it still kicks ass. Keep on ripping and tearing you guys!

Hey gang! I’m a new patron here! Eagles unite! I found your podcast when I was replaying Fallout New Vegas and loved your coverage of the fallout series! Your podcasts have made the monotonous job of brewing so much more enjoyable! My topic is gaming with your significant other. I am about to get married October 1st to the woman of my dreams. When we first met I reignited her love for video games! I got her to play Red Dead Redemption 2 and the Witcher 3 and she loved it! We have played games like it takes two and the Lego games together, what other games would you recommend for couch co op? Thanks homies

Soulful Bison

In the era of increasingly sizeable game installs, I was simply curious if you have any considerations when it comes to games installed by on y’all’s computers and systems. Are there games you always keep installed and ready to play, when you finish a game do you remove it from your system, do y’all have good enough download speeds to make this a non-issue. Just a little thing I’ve been dealing with as my system is finally nearing a full hard disk. (I even even do a form of this with board games that have incredibly intensive setup/teardown such as This war of Mine and Frostpunk, both of which I recommend and pretty dang good adaptations in it of themselves)

Bad news: you're dead! Good news: There's something on the other side! Bad news: You had unfinished business, so now you'll haunt the earth! Good news: you get to choose who you'll haunt and how! (And get creative! Don't just be an invisible seat pusher!)

What real life nouns sound the most like a Dark Souls enemy, location, or item? Since the thought occured to me, my official nouns for submission are Saw Horse, Magic Eraser, and Roach Motel.

Chapel Collins

In order of importance: 1. Have you played any of the recent pathfinder games? What did you think of them? 2. Why do bad things happen to good people?

Mark Laufgraben

What are some genres you like but find inherently problematic? Not in a racist way- my example would be RTS or some tactics games, which I like a lot as long as I never lose a mission but which have the inherent problem (to me) of requiring up to an hour of replaying the same stuff when you lose late in a mission. Also, got any fixes those genres could try?

Andrew T

These days I'm seeing three different 'strategies' in mind by publishers when it comes to pricing for games: 1) Charge more money for the game up front ($70 for example) with any DLC's being free after that point 2) Release the DLC with the game and let the customer decide what they want to buy (for example, $60 for the game and $20 for the DLC) 3) Charge the 'normal' $60 for a game but also make available a 'season pass' which gets you any DLC's that are released in the future for free. I see pros and cons for each of these, so which approach do YOU like the best, or is there another one you prefer?

Greg Polander

Y’all play Gotcha Force on game cube? I know y’all are a little bit older than me, but for me it was a childhood game that induced a fever dream kind of state for some reason. It was one of those games that I played waaaayyyy too much for how little I understood what was going on or how to play it, which always leaves very poignant memories in my head. Sonic Adventure DX: Directors Cut is another personal example.

Austin Mathis

Hey guys! Bit of a personal question. I struggle with anxiety, and as such haven't been on an airplane in a few years. I'm scared of heights and the claustrophobia of being trapped in a tube for hours. I know you both have mentioned some levels of anxiety related to travel so I was wondering if you had any advice to help me back into the sky! Thank you!

Matt DiTomaso

Hey! Thought I'd throw out simpler ones this month, what's your favorite controller you've used? I'm a big fan of 8bitdo's SN30 pro line, it's like a dualshock with a SNES Dpad, feels real good. Similarly, do either of you have opinions on the slow adoption of Gyroscopic controls in console games? I used to avoid playing shooters on controller, but after using the bow in BOTW, I was hooked to gyro - aim. It's to the point that I only buy shooters on steam, so I can hack together gyro through the steam input system. Thanks for all the great podcasts!

I recently finished Blasphemous II, and while still not a triumph like Environmental Station Alpha or Hollow Knight, I thought it was an improvement on most facets of its predecessor. However, for many of its side quests, I instinctively hit a point where I was done exploring for collectables by myself and opened up a location map to round up the straggling doodads and whatnots. Unlike those games which breathe with real with wind in their chests, Blasphemous II remained something like a toy to me; my investment in the game wasn't high enough to act like I was living in the world instead of just playing inside of it. Do you find that there is a difference to how you'll play a game if you aren't fully immersed or drawn into it, maybe just merely enjoying it? Or rather, what causes you to go into a game like a traveller lost instead of like a guided tourist? Thanks!

Hey guys. New subscriber here so forgive me if these have been suggested before, but I would LOVE discussions about: 1. Nier: Automata 2. The Splinter Cell series (all at once or even just a single one) If I had to pick one it would definitely be Nier. It's my favorite game and got me through a very hard time in Afghanistan so it holds a special place in my heart, plus I think it has one of the BEST soundtracks I've ever heard. As for a question, in games like Baldur's Gate 3, what's your go-to character build, or if that's too broad, what's your favorite build you've had the most fun with in the past?

Caleb Johnson

Hey guys. I thought you could discuss in-game economies. I just finished playing FFXVI, and while I enjoyed the experience I found the in-game economy to be deeply flawed. I was earning gil with nothing to spend it on, and constantly picking up crafting materials that I had no use for because I had dozens of them already. Quests would give me a special crafting material allowing me to craft a certain weapon, but at that point why not just reward me with the weapon? What, to you, makes a good or bad economy? What are some examples you have of each. On a side note, I just wanted to say that Gary has seemed more light-hearted and joyful since he’s gotten married, and that’s pretty cool. Not that he seemed miserable before. lol

Shane Salley

Howdy howdy howdy! Have either of you played Armored Core 6 yet? Just completed the third and final ending: feeling a little confused and I hope to hear your thoughts on the story as I felt there was a lot going on between multiple characters aligning this way and that way as well as some solid writing elevated by some well characterized vocal performances. Bonus question: favorite horror movie?

Ethan Hoffman

Hey gang, Monster here. I've recently been playing Baldurs Gate 3 on the PS5, and have to say I'm absolutely DELIGHTED at how well it turned out, especially with how it plays on a controller! Since it's D&D season once again here at Casa Nuggets, I've been relistening to old episodes of Monster in My Podcast, and was wondering: Would you guys ever consider doing a new season of MMP? Keep up the fantastic work gang🤙

MonsteR_NuggetS

I've been playing the pokemon tcg gbc game in preparation for the WOFF episode, and it's got me thinking about digital trading card games in general. SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters, the Marvel tcg on DS, etc. Most of the time these games are just a console rpg with random battles being replaced with card battles, but that extra layer of strategy really helps break up the monotony. Have either of you explored this niche genre and if so are there any that stick out in particular, good or bad?

Fatt Mox

Favorite games dealing with breakups/divorce? How about other media?

Rob

Hey! I remember having a chat with Gary on the SA Forums back in the day when WOFF first launched, about the show’s aims and aspirations. Stoked it’s come so far (I recently came back to the fold). Wondering how confident you were back then that the show would find an audience, and that you had a good thing on your hands. Was there ever a point where you were anxious about the show finding some traction?

Alex

Hey guys! Long time listener of the show, and many of the other shows on the network! I have a question for Gary (because I know Kole doesn’t listen to Guppy) but Gary, what is your all favourite time favourite moment from Guppy, if you could pick one?

Blake
