Bonfireside Chat 284: Elden Ring Soundtrack (Part 2)

Comments

The Godskin Apostles slaps and reminds me in parts of both Maiden Astraea and the "sad strings" part of Gehrman's boss theme.

Also: Highly agreed I want a King's Field 4 soundtrack / moodboard / atmosphere vibes back. Even some of its imitators (Lunacid etc. on Steam) are missing that aspect of it. KF4 might be in my top 3 if not my favorite video game soundtrack of all time, and it's PERFECT listening for work. It's no surprise that Tsukasa Saitoh would end up doing some of my favorite modern From music.

Armored Core brings back another legacy From Software stalwart, Kota Hoshino to helm the soundtrack. He is to the AC series what Tsukasa Saitoh was to their fantasy output back in the day. If you've heard previous AC tracks, they're all garage-rock/techno, whereas the AC6 track leans a bit more towards the electronic side of things, and I quite like it but your mileage may vary depending on your tastes. Kota Hoshino has been doing primary sound design for combat and environment since From moved to Souls games, so I'm glad he was given another chance to lead the soundtrack for a game (His Evergrace OST is kind of batshit and so unlike anything I'd heard)

Not sure if you’ll be covering Armored Core or not, but yeah the soundtrack is considerably different. I’d say there’s a few standouts, but it can be pretty repetitive, even for “electronic” music. That said, the music in the soundtrack that feels like it was made to convey a sense unease or anxiety I find quite effective. Character themes are largely carried by the character themselves, more so than track complexity IMO

I believe the "Beef: It's What's for Dinner" song is from the ballet "Rodeo" by Aaron Copland. There's a lot of that same sound in the Zelda: BotW soundtrack (during enemy encounters specifically, if I recall correctly). The Elden Ring boss themes are the first that I have been able to remember, (outside of Bloodborne and plink plonk from DS1). So, unlike Gary's legitimate feelings on the matter, it feels to me like they've finally figured it out (except the Elden Ring/Radagon theme, which I find deeply revolting) and should keep going 😁
