Unfilmable 61: Skinamarink

He spelled the name of the movie funny so kids wouldn't accidentally google for it.

Have you watched The Outwaters?

Zach Lawrence

I actually enjoyed Skinamarink, but boy I'd evicerate 40 min from this film and I think it would be stronger for it

To me the touchstones of this film are the ending of 2001: A Space Odyssey, the live-action films of Jan Švankmajer, and the latter films of Robert Bresson. Maybe a little David Lynch (who also sent the director a gift of congratulations for the film, so he’s another fan) And analog horror ofc. I don’t think a film I’ve seen in years has stuck with me as much as this one. It’s an enormous achievement in film storytelling. Also, the “silly” sound effects are a reference to the cartoon by the entity. I think they work quite well.

For what it's worth, regarding the pretention accusations, the person who introduced this film to rme and who loves it is, while by no means stupid, definitely not a cinephile or even especially media literate, and not at all the intellectual type. Meanwhile I am pretty smart and media literate and I couldn't stand it. I think it's just a matter of how you're exposed to it and what your tolerance is for the use of boredom as a deliberate creative tool; if it's extremely high, this is the movie for you, and if it's not, then it probably isn't

If I had seen this as a kid (if I'd been able to sit through it) it would've terrified me. I had so many nightmares of similar situations, of being stuck alone in a dark house, or of a TV that would not shut off. That said, I could never watch this again, unless they cut this down by 40 minutes.

If it's a question of a concept that can't sustain the execution, I wonder if a better fit might be Local58? https://www.youtube.com/@LOCAL58TV It's in the same fake-found-footage-horror steeze, but in 5-10 minute shorts. The closest to Skinamarink is probably "You Are on the Fastest Available Route," but my personal favorites are probably "Real Sleep" and "Weather Service."

Matt Bixler! Hello!

I had a similar experience, my two friends I saw it with loved it, I loved the premise, liked the first half and thought it slowly fell apart from there to end up just being above average 🤷

Keith Huston

As a new dad, the crying boy who cut his own eye still haunts me.

Will Owens

I respect this movie but I don't like it. It does have one of the better child actor performances in a film, and it gets it by not really filming them! It's a smart choice.

Richard Cochnar

I didn't think Sharon, Lois and Bram were that scary as a kid.

Shawn Hood

Having seen this in a theater, I noticed something interesting... when the movie ended and the lights came on, everyone was whispering, as if they were in church. For a movie that's so much about making you feel trapped within a certain space, the spell seemed to work on everybody in the room, even those who hated it (and I overheard a couple who definitely did).

Mike Suskie

respect for the kids but i think i could take on the skinnermarink

Ah! I enjoyed listening but now I’m dying to hear what y’all think of Talk to Me! I didn’t find it scary, and it just felt overly mean-spirited to me, with really stupidly written characters to boot. My mate thinks I’m an idiot with no taste though, because she enjoyed Talk to Me’s vibe. So!

Morgan

Great episode. I was originally an "abuse metaphor" viewer of this, with the idea of the kids not being able to understand what was happening, but I'm now with you guys in thinking there's not enough to go on and it probably doesn't matter. For me this was kind of a vibe movie, I think. If there are people out there over-intellectualizing, I think I under-intellectualized it. Side note, literally fist pumped when you said Talk to Me was next. Haven't seen it but have been wanting to and now is the time.

As a whore for horror I'm not made of stone, the hype that this movie had me curious enough to fly the black flag and watch the leak (because its limited release didn't include the part of East Coast Canada I live in). And I straight up did not like it, but my default is to try to at least understand the perspective of those who feel differently than myself. In reading my way around the numerous articles at the time there was very little articulation of why the author liked it so I'm grateful for you two even if I'm a little colder on it (more of a Gary than a Kole if this were to be an online quiz)! But one thing that did come up time and time again in my reading was Antrum a movie I enjoyed much more and if not for recommendations being poison would highly recommend. Also in between my first and second watches of skinamarink I watched heck which I felt is strictly better for my sensibilities! Ps I loved the movie you're covering next month so I think I'll rewatch that now that you've spoken it back into my awareness

Fromaginator

Was somewhat relieved that you guys were more or less on the same page as me in regards to this film. This film was my first trip back to the cinema since the pandemic hit, and what a bleak return it was. I agree that the good parts were good, but I can stare at the wall in my own house for 40 minutes, thank you very much.

Matthew Bennett

*tape hiss* "walden... two?"

Typhoon Jim

(i found this movie enchanting but idk if i would watch it again, certainly too long for its premise. but it did work on me as far as being "horror movie resemblng actual nightmares you've had" and i cant shake that first impression)

sleepysmiles

my favorite part was when the skinamarink came out of its skinabox and started skinamarinking around

sleepysmiles

Looking forward to the Ep. Really enjoyed the film, but can totally get why someone would dislike it. Glad it exists, to show the horror of living in Edmonton.

Man I didn't realize this film was as divisive as it was and I felt like I was alone in feeling like this movie was so padded out. It drove me mad when one of the kids would do something or something would happen to them from the corner of a room, for that kid to go into another room and explain what just happened to them while you look at another corner of a room. JUST SHOW ME SOMETHING. ANYTHING. i fully appreciate what the movie was going for, I just felt like it was beating a dead horse after a while
