Real Lich Hours 17: The Zhentarim

I probably still spelled it wrong.

Anyways, pointless trivia I guess, but it's interesting how the main setting has shifted over the years.

At the risk of sounding like Old Man Chris over here, I recall the Zhents being the main antagonists of most forgotten realms content about 30 years ago, when a lot of the stories were based around Shadowdale and the sea of fallen stars. Then icewind Dale kinda sucked up all the air... now it's Sword Coast or nothin seemingly.

This is a perfect excuse to bring up my favorite bit of Manshoon lore! At some point Manshoon canonically died...kinda. As a Mister Sinister-esque contingency he had several instances of the Clone spell hidden in Zhentarim lairs. Now, usually with Clone you just transfer into it, but Manshoon transfered into ALL of his clones at once and was overcome with a compulsion to kill every other clone. This resulted in The Manshoon Wars were, like, 30 Manshoons raised armies and fought each other all over the Forgotten Realms, terrorizing everyone in the ultimate form of "No! I'm the original!" Fucking apex wizard shenanigans.

I don't have a ton of D&D experience but I always liked playing fighters. Finally decided to roll a barbarian because I had a silly idea for a Goblin Barbarian. Found out that rage is actually an insane defensive tool as well. Party got cornered and I had to eat half a dozen crossbow shots but came through it like a champ due to the damage resistance. So instead of getting mad and hitting things I tend to think of it more like a button to push when I'm about to do something reckless. It definitely made the differences between the figher and barb click to me in a way that reading about them never did. Barbarians don't really have the potential options that fighters do so they don't worry as much about strategy or positioning. They just kinda jump in and hit stuff and you either die spectacularly or come out of it grinning like a madman.

Which cat was quietly messing around with a guitar at the end of the episode? :v

To Gary’s question about reckless attacks on barbarians, the great weapon master feat pumps out massive damage because the effective disadvantage cancels out. In my current (first) playthrough I’m always reckless attacking unless I have advantage first. Flavorwise, barbarians are also hilarious. You can force the goblin at the gate of the goblin camp to eat Warg shit himself, which he does with some pretty gnarly audio effects

Touching on the discussion with throwing goblins around with tavern brawler I had a ton of fun having my berserker barbarian Karlach pick up Dror's underlings and knocking him prone with them. I think I knocked about half his health down by repeatedly throwing one poor not-dead-but-praying-for-death goblin at him. It was incredibly amusing.
