Underdark Wrap Up Thoughts for Real Lich Hours!

Hey folks

We have a weird amount of stuff to cover in our last 3 episodes on the Underdark (2.5 eppos on the Grymforge) so we're going to roll some additional listener stories into the 3rd episode.

Tell us what you think about the Underdark! Tell us your Underdark stories! Did you fight the Lava Elemental? What sort of beast do you think destroyed the old Shar Compound?

Reply here for an extended Forum before we tackle Rosymorn!

Note, this won't come out for a bit. We still have to talk about the Arcane Tower (SA Get In Emote)

I know this might not include one in the Underark, but Since you all are wrapping up Act 1, I know Gary and Kole enjoyed Divinity Original Sin 2, but I had a moment where I got so excited when in the Druids Grove I found a Portrait of Lohse. I refuse to look things up, so I tried to find some sort of connection in the books around before giving up. Then, as I frantically searched every room in the burning Waukeens Rest, I found another portrait, this one of the Red Prince. I'll bet there are more and probably at least one somewhere in the Underdark. I think collect-a-thons are a mortal sin, but all of a sudden I felt this unconscionable urge to find every single one of these damn things. Love the show guys. Glad to see all of these fun responses.

By the end of the grymforge I ended up being really intimidated by Duergar. Two of toughest fights in the game until that point (and past it honestly) were with Duergar opponents. Gekh Coal especially has a cool entrance if he surprises you in the decrepit village. He’s towering over you on a raised platform and him calling you things like sunscum just drove home the fact that my character was way out of his depth. The Duergar with Nere can go invisible, enlarge, and mind control you. I didn’t know you could turn them against each other and ended up fighting all of them which also really upped their intimidation factor for me. The under dark sent me down a rabbit hole of reading about it and its inhabitants in the source books. And the game itself has cool flavour like their boat design and traveling through the underwater river networks, which was very cool.

Another thing I also really like about the Underdark is the introduction to Ketheric Thorm, and how the impact he has had on the world and the locations you visit is described through text but also some of the animals (like the Deep Rothe who talks about the Ketheric Thorm like he’s an Urban legend). The game does a really good job at building up its villains without having them constantly be present, in fact his absence feels quiant. The Grymforge is a great hub with a lot of history, some of which you can potentially pinder using history checks and the fight against Grym is a lot of fun (less so on Honor Mode). But it is really good.

I actually entered the Underdark the first time by jumping into the hole where I pushed the Matriarch Spider using feather fall. The fact that it worked is one of the many reasons I love this developer and their last game DOS2 as well.

The Underdark is easily my favorite experience in the game so far (into early Act 3) for the sheer beauty and wonder of it. It connected to some of my earliest fascination with DnD: Dangerous underground realm with fantastic, lurid monsters. I’m thinking of some of the late 70s and early 80s Advanced Dungeons and Dragons cover art. (Yes, I’m old.) But I also like how it goes beyond the spectacle and gives you meaning storylines (Selunite outpost, myconid political drama, etc.) Love it!

Not sure if this is the best place because I am still around episode 7(love the new show so much). It would be cool to hear the names of your characters and reasons you named them that. Hearing one was named Gorman made me think of the idealistic yet inexperienced LT in Aliens. Thank you and apologies if it is covered after ep7 and I missed it.

One of my play through I was able to convince them to turn on the red cap and they made me their leader.

First, it’s so beautiful. The tribe worshiping the fake bhaal. The tower. If you play as a Drow they know more about the lake. Just the little details that get missed if you run through. Didn’t know that if baelen dies the quest continues in act 3 to find his wife a cat. Found out Baelen abused Derryth for years and he was an alcoholic. I’m not sure if she gave him something to forget and make his memory like it is because that could be explained with alcohol induced dementia. But I know if you give him the noble stock, he becomes an asshole again. The spectator scene. I absolutely love. The bulette cracks me up. The way it laughs when you miss. (Shadowheart) the note in a bottle down by the lake. It’s beautiful.

That series of events is incredible with the Bulette showing up to help you out haha

I was surprised how much of the Underdark that I missed in my first playthrough. Despite doing what I thought was a quite thorough pass desperately trying to find a way to the Gauntlet of Shar for Shadowheart, I somehow missed the myconid village and the sussar tree entirely. On the note of the Gauntlet, this almost pulls off a Dark Souls - based on the positioning of the exit from Grymforge and the entrance to the Gauntlet, I'm sure that what you can see across the gap from Grymforge is supposed to be the Gauntlet. It doesn't seem to quite match up, though, and I wish it did for those cool realizations of recognizing another area from where you are.

One sequence of encounters in the Underdark is when I really fell in love with the game. My under-levelled party wandered into the duergar ambush and got rolled. After a quick reload, we went instead to the Myconid Colony, where we were soon charged with killing those same duergar. We picked up Glut on the way out and then stumbled into Filro the Forgotten and some Hook Horrors near the Sussur Tree. The fight was going poorly until the Bulette rolled up. While the Horrors ganged up on the Bulette, my party dealt with Filro. Glut reanimated the Bulette after the fight and we rolled over to the duergar and repaid their ambush with interest. My player character (Tiresias, everyone's favourite himbo Dark Urge paladin) played along when Glut predictably asked the party to betray Spaw. We went back to the Colony, spoke to Spaw, double-crossed and killed Glut, and then received the thanks of the nation.

If you pickpocket the sickle from the head priest guy during the first interaction with BOOOAL, you can get the blessing without sacrificing Gale and ending your honor mode run early. Learning this taught me the wrong lesson, and I spent the whole rest of my playthrough pickpocketing quest rewards before turning in the quest to see what happens. Mostly, you just people off. Still, probably one of the most fun secret areas I've ever found. Remember: if Cauliflower can be a pizza, and red caps can be Gods or sheep, you can be anything you set your mind to.

One of my absolute favorite things that happened to me almost immediately upon entering the Underdark was finding the Phalar Aluve. A +1 longsword with bonus abilities and with the finesse property for my drow rogue? Bestill my heart! Better yet it's for followers of Eillestraee, aka the daughter of Corellon and my god Lolth. Time to reclaim this weapon of good for my spider queen.

Exploring the underdark was my highlight of Act 1, as it really felt like an adventure full of peril. Standout moments for me were running into the construct fight in the Arcane tower and feeling very outnumbered. However I wondered, 'wait, does the elevator still work in combat?' As with all things Larian, it turns out it does, so I used guerilla hit and run tactics where I would attack some enemies, then use the elevator to go down one floor, so they would have to waste their turns getting to my party, all huddled together in the tiny elevator. It was still a stressful fight but we prevailed and there is no better feeling in gaming than being rewarded for experimenting tactically. On the flip side, I thought I had a smart set up for the Lava elemental fight, when I discovered it whilst exploring way above above the near the huge river of lava. However it turns out it's impossible to deal enough damage to it without getting it out of its healing lava, so I was forced to feather fall/misty step everyone but Astarion down into the lava ruin to do battle. Still a thrilling fight and arena :) Lastly I thought it was Yurgir who had charged his way through to destroy the Sharran temple, but I could be wrong. Cheers from the UK, love the show
