Is there anything YOU want to know about Baldur's Gate 3?

Is there anything you specifically want to hear explained about Baldur's Gate 3? Any esoteric mechanics or quirks of the system? I'm not an expert or anything, but my goal is to become one by the end of this show's BG3 season, and though I have a large list of things I'd like to explore, I'm always looking for blind spots.

So if there's something you want to hear explained, or just something you specifically want our opinions on, please let me know!

Here are some topics I have in mind for the next 4 or 5 episodes.

* How the various "jails" work in the game
* Differences between offensive cantrips
* How to best utilize Elixirs and other "til long rest" effects
* What the hell is up with how horny this game is?
* Specifically how stealth checks work with obscured states
* Which crafting components are worth picking up and which aren't

Thanks!
Gary

Related: When does Disguise Self work and not work? I've found throughout the game that enemies I really want to trick for some reason (e.g., folks in my current playthrough while I have the Enemy of Justice status) ignore my party's disguises. I actually haven't used one successfully yet.

Joseph

I don't know that I've seen that! Rare statuses is a great idea for a segment though. -GB

Duckfeed.tv

The "Enemy of Justice" status. I accidentally unleashed a Spectator at the Goblin Camp, and afterwards all goblins started attacking me on sight. I think every goblin in Act 1 is dead now, but I still have the "Enemy of Justice" status. Who's left who saw what happened?

Joseph

1. Attack rolls e.g how do they get easier as you level up 2. Multiclassing with a focus on where the benefits overlap. e.g Sorlocks can use metamagic on eldritch blast. What other class abilities blend together like that. 3. For much later - strategies to de-risk your honour mode run Congrats on the launch of RLH!

Brad

Temple of Elemental Evil has great turn based combat. According to popular opinion you need to mod the game heavily to make it worth playing, so I've never played it unmodded. Circle of Nine is the mod pack to look out for IRRC.

Tom Gilbert

I am a hypocrite who can't get enough of 75+ symbols in Darkest Dungeon 2, but I'm overwhelmed by the BG3 UI. How do I use my volumetric shit compressor and get over the endless icons?

Jack Corrigan

I’d love to hear about stealth mechanics and how they interplay with things like “pass without trace” and other things meant to boost your stealth. From my own play through, I never ended up using those spells and enhancements because it seemed sightline based but maybe I missed something?

Marjorie

How do I stop myself from being a loot-goblin! I know the answer is "don't" but that hasn't worked for me yet.

The Duke of Nebraska

So polite, the people of BG3, who don't react when I look like the Joker got leprosy

Typhoon Jim

Perhaps the most frustrating aspect of BG3 for me. I kept looking for a way to make a character butt into a conversation. I did so much reloading because I was like "the combat pointman isn't supposed to talk now!!!"

Typhoon Jim

Hi guys, Would love to know more about the ins and outs of switching characters in your party, less for using their unique actions and more specifically for interacting with NPCs, getting different conversations points and using characters to their strengths/expertise. I feel like at the moment I just have a guess about what conversation might focus on and then interact with one of my party who seems most appropriate but the results seem a bit mixed. Loving the show! Ben

Benjamin Wilde

ah! I'm a bit behind (been fighting a cold) but it looks like I'm loading up my podcast for work tonight. Thanks for all the work btw, having stuff to listen to helps make work a lot less tedious and the lore bits in this show scratches a bit of the D&D itch I missed from Monster in my Podcast

greyrain

We talked about stealing in a recent episode!

Duckfeed.tv

These games always turn me into a compulsive thief regardless of what class/build I end up playing as. Stealing things is just too much fun. So I've been curious about how thieving works in BG3 compared to Divinity and if spells like invisibility still make sneaking around picking locks and things easier when there are a lot inconvenient witnesses around. Give us some crime tips! Also curious if either of you tried playing as one of the companions in BG3 instead of making your own character. Hearing you talk about that in the Divinity 2 Woff was really interesting to me and it's a thing I hear almost no talk about in this game apart from the occasional thread where people talk about shipping characters. Maybe it's because D&D makes people more inclined to roll their own character?

greyrain

Proficiency, Advantage, Disadvantage, Saving throws, Feats could all be great topics. Also need a tight 5 on who your Seven Mary Three choices are lol

Kalem Wedemyer

I'd love a "min max minute" segment where you talk about some of the absurdly broken builds you can set up in the game.

David

Wanted to add that despite not loving the game I am loving the show, listening made me start a dark urge playthrough, which I quit about 6 hours in out of boredom unfortunately

Jonathan shields

What is it about the game that you both find so special and endearing? I don’t think Iv ever wanted to like a game more but after finishing the gauntlet of shar I just find the game very boring. I don’t have any solid criticisms it’s just not clicking with me right now, sometimes hearing what other people are loving about a game help me see it in a new light.

Jonathan shields

This will be an end of game topic, but how the second and third act compared to the first act, which had been in early access release for years with constant player feedback. Were there noticeablely different levels of polish, playability, flexibility and focus?

Erik North

Possibilities and Limits of roleplay. I would also love a discussion on the interplay of roleplay and gamemechanics. For example, I don’t love how they handle ceremorphosis. Getting parasite abilities is purely mechanical with no story repercussions, while the ceremorphosis is just a dialogue choice.

C. Guese

I think the small bits of lore behind the hirelings (and their names) are good for a nice little cute segment.

Francisco

There are a few common bugs in the BG3 game that other players would find solutions for helpful. Specifically the keyboard 'escape' key no longer working, solution is F5 quicksave, ALT+F4 out, then reload that save. 'Immobile frightened' not ending after countdown, solution save and reload. Game breaking bug in the Gauntlet of Shah trials, despite completing all the challenges not receiving sufficient orbs to unlock final door at lowest level. Solution not shown here as may be a gameplay SPOILER/cheat, but can provide on request if Googling doesn't answer.

The Lord Marshal

not to mention sort of against canon? i mean, even with the many liberties and extensions Larian take with and add to lllithid lore... even with the conceit that the Emperor is special and has retained his pre-illithid personality somewhat... WHY WOULD HE EVER CARE ABOUT HORNY THINGS?! FFS! like, ok, the characters are vicarious horniness proxies for players, Larian knows their audience, there seems to be high incidence of degeneracy... fine, allow PCs to hit on and sexualize everything and anything. however, it would've been extremely confident and internally consistent of Larian to have the Emperor go "what in the hells are you doing?!" when you try to mack on him, instead of giving you bedroom squid eyes. which was very, very silly.

Liar

YEEEEEEESSSS BWUAHAHAHA

Mateus Silva

Interested if a console or console-like experience changes how you play and how well it translates. Have you tried it on gamepad? I've heard the UI and control of the characters change to accommodate? Would also be interested it hear if you guys have any experience with the game on the Deck or consoles. Thanks!

Paul

Hi guys, BG3 was one of the best games I've ever played and I wanted to get more of that world, but I could not get into the combat system in BG1 and 2. I really like turn based combat of 3, but can't quite figure out pausing combat like in the first two BG or Neverwinter Nights games. Are there any other, preferably older CRPGs (besides Divinity), that have turn-based combat that can somewhat scratch the itch I'm having? Love the show. You guys have something special here. Sean

Sean P.

I’d love to hear an in-depth discussion of the game’s ImSim elements. I think that’s something that really sets Larian apart from everyone else making CRPGs these days (Owlcat, Inexile, Obsidian, etc) and I think it should be talked about more in general. Also very excited to hear your examination of jails and the crime system in general - it feels a little half-baked to me but I haven’t messed with it much.

pigeonb0y

there really, really should have been some (or more) explicitly romantic things you can say to the Emperor *after* the big reveal that would cause the romance to be triggered. triggering it based on the way you interacted with him when he was (spoilers?) catfishing you feels super icky

pigeonb0y

There's enough stat bonus items that I can make up for it, but if you really want to make the beastly save or suck spells work you gotta push those ASIs which is sort of a shame because some feats change how a character feels.

Typhoon Jim

Inventory - man, I've spent a lot of time managing the inventory in this game. When I started a new playthrough now to follow the show, I almost dropped out an hour in, dealing with the inventory again. Any good rules of thumb/strategy to handle this? (I'm playing on console, by the way). In my first playthrough I also grabbed every book i found, just in case they would be useful for something, but I guess they really aren't? Could I just as well have just let them be? I feel the game teaches us that there definitely are important books to grabb and bring as well though. Any thoughts in this?

Bjørn Arne Odden

Broadly speaking, the crunchiest grognardy stuff that you Gary are genuinely interested in, I want the sicko tactics min max stuff.

Alex Cercone

Oh and also which illithid powers are best and how to use them.

Autumn M

Man I’ve had this game for a while and I’ve only really played it for one night because I’d kinda rather play it with three friends and treat it like a proper table top campaign. Has anyone else experienced a similar feeling and been able to overcome it and enjoy the game more while playing solo?

MIKEISTKRIEG

I would love whatever advice you have on ways to set up a battlefield when you know a combat is going to start. Optimal positioning, opening moves, environmental setup, choosing targets, that sort of thing. In my experience the first turn of combat is the most important.

Autumn M

All you need to do to experience the console UI on the PC is to play with a controller (it switches between those on the fly). In some aspects it's better, but I still prefer using kb+m for this game in most cases.

Adam Hošek

Tips for navigating and reading areas? I'm loving this game but I'm experiencing a LOT of friction just getting around. I often feel like I can't zoom out enough or put the camera quite where I'd like it, and I'm constantly getting turned around and having a very hard time understanding physical spaces I'm in. Also having a ton of trouble relating the mini-map to what I'm looking at in-game. I don't have much experience with PC games of this sort or playing with mouse and keyboard, I'm curious how you prefer to interface with it. Pure mouse vs panning with the keyboard, how much you're using hotkeys, how you utilize the map etc. I assume this will improve over time, but input would be appreciated as this is really affecting my ability to effectively experience the game at the moment. Of the topics you mentioned at the top, DEFINITELY interested in hearing about what is and isn't worth picking up, as well as your overall approach to looting as you progress through an area. Just sort of overwhelmed by the pure density of stuff all over the place!

Deca

Multi-classing! Why would you do it? How can you make an effective build? Is it more effective than sticking with a single class?

Naveen Sivakumar

Maybe how surfaces work and the different elemental reactions? It isn't as wild as DOS:2 but is still highly encouraged. Essentially, I second Jordan.

TB

What are consistent moral positions you can have in this game other than "I'm the best golly-gee hero" and "I'm here to ruin your day." They have multiple approaches in specific situations but are there stances that work throughout?

Zaynation

That's the most frustrating thing about bg3, especially with only 12 levels they should have let you get both stats and feats. The feats aren't game-breaking but they would really help differentiating characters without worrying about being non-optimal.

Zaynation

Ah, understandable.

Hunter Rings

No worries! Just wanted to make sure I didn't end up missing content waiting for a feed to update that was made to stop at the first three episodes, or to have just missed on the website where the directions already were. =D

Eric Jedraszczak

We'll look into it!

Duckfeed.tv

Charges are something on my personal list to look up now that I'm main'ing a caster, so this is a great idea. -GB

Duckfeed.tv

Sadly, I haven't played on console yet, so this might be a ways off. -GB

Duckfeed.tv

I'd be interested in a discussion of the differences between various difficulty modes, and if you've done Honor Mode or not.

Typhoon Jim

I’m also wondering about this!

Matt

yeah I tried to do Lightning Guy like they were trying to make me do but so much of that stuff just had the stuffing beat out of it by "boots make you go faster"

Typhoon Jim

I know that in regular 5e they're just a no brainer if you haven't something better in mind because stat increases are so wide ranging in their impact (especially for spellcasters) whereas a feat is extremely situational. Taking Polearm Master gets you a bonus buttstroke and a special reactive attack, but 2 points of strength affects your damage, your to hit, your ability to push people around, your carrying capacity... Is this entirely true in BG3, though? I've definitely seen people use some feats that really tied the whole room together (tavern brawler)

Typhoon Jim

I'd say maybe for a joke or short discussion comparing the companions, personality wise, to the companions from Dragon Age Origins.

Joe Binson

Astarion, duh

Joe Binson

Some ideas (though some of these might be a little broad to tackle without breaking them up a bit): • Feats - which ones are strong picks, and when to choose them over just the stat increases • Status effects (spells) - statuses can help with so much crowd control but there are so many varieties that it's hard to decide on the most effective • Status effects (equipment) - whats the deal with all these lightning charges and arcane synergies and acuities and whatnot, and are any of them worthwhile to build around • Utility spells/abilities - advice for good out-of-combat use cases (there's obvious ones like invisibility for sneaking or creating water to douse fire, or neat things like using gaseous form to go through small gaps and openings, but I feel like there's a lot of potential utility in the skill lists that I haven't fully wrapped my head around) • How to make the most of your casters - spell save DC vs attack rolls, reducing enemy resistances and saving throws, etc • Similar to above - how to go about choosing the right spell loadout for casters, avoiding things like too much or not enough spells of certain kinds, or having too many concentration spells vying for attention • Terrain effects - this game definitely doesn't lean into terrain control as heavily as, say, Divinity Original Sin 2, but there are still some interesting things you can do to change the battlefield in your favor

Jordan Parfitt

The game was way hornier on release than it is now, because party members started with their horndog meter maxing out at a very low level. But it still feels pretty hornt up.

Typhoon Jim

Will a bespoke feed be created for this content, especially when it moves behind the paywall? If so will a walkthrough be provided like when the WofF and BFC went that direction? Just want to make sure I see how to do it in time since trying to find things in the past on Patreon feeds is.... horrible. =D

Eric Jedraszczak

was gonna add this, I feel very seen by this. My only follow-up question would be "...especially with respect to the Emperor romance??" Honestly, up until that point, the horniness was expected and, while not for me, very easy to tune out. Also, handwaive-able via argument of "everyone's hot and magic and world is ending". I was even appreciative of drow twins bit - boring domestic sex being ultimate kink for them was very well observed and funny. I know people like that. But the Emperor horniness clanged hard and urged an "oh for fuck's sake!" at the naked self-parody of it.

Liar

Alchemy is so under explained. It’s there, could be super powerful, but feels like an afterthought

Fang

I think a more in depth look at the feats in the game. It’s a bit overwhelming to be given a full list of every feat in 5e at once, especially for those who are unfamiliar with them

TheEggMcWaffle

we all know who the best girl is (karlach) but who is the best boy?

Cassandra Banner

Honestly, even some general wisdom on the rest resources. What’s your rhythm with those like?

Nick Paul

I would love if you all explained some of the "charges" in the game and their respective condition during battle. For example, heat / heat convergence, lightning charges, reverberation, etc. Another topic could be environmental conditions in battle that give bonus damage. For example wet condition resulting in bonus cold and lightning damage. Thanks yall!

Patrick Swearingen

I’d be interested in a discussion about radial customization

Hunter Rings

"What the hell is up with how horny this game is?"

Liar

Alchemy, how best to use it. Are some characters better at brewing than others? What if I hate crafting in other games. Also dye jobs, how to get colours?

Jacob Turner

Things like arcane acuity, lightning charges, heat…. What’s the interaction with acid or blood on the floor?

Mateus Silva

I played through this game in 100 hours and didn't craft a single potion or thing because I took one look at the system and it freaked me out. So something on that, as well as how to identify what is junk to sell right away and what are true treasures.

Tommy Baker

A breakdown of the non-action stuff you can use during your turn might be useful. I've been having a hard time predicting when I'll have a bonus action or a additional attack or a weapon attack or one thing or another. Obviously the game will just tell you which buttons you can hit and which you can't, but there's been a lot of times when I'll take a bonus action and think I'll have an extra attack or some such thing and discover I'm wrong and I've just botched a turn.

Matt Bixler! Hello!

Maybe a bit later on for the show. But the relationships between members of thr party. There are lots of dialogues in each configuration. My personal favorite is the bickering between Minthara and Gale. Followed closely by Shadowheart and Laezel

Sam Shjerven

I would absolutely love to hear more about offensive cantrips and maybe some thoughts on the variations in spells between different casting classes. I'm kind of confused on the spell list for my Necromancer Wizard.

Matthew Shaffer

I’ve still not got my head around all the various non-5e buffs they added to equipment and how people are using them in various builds. I tried to build a storm sorcerer with a focus on lighting charges but the measly few extra damage points don’t really make the equipment worth keeping over gear with more obvious benefits. Does your traditional DND brain make you discount the extra stuff?

Richard Bradshaw

Why is it that stat increases are the best feats to choose?

Jason Mossman

Cantrips as a whole are still a bit hard to grasp for me. A general explanation of them would be very much appreciated!

Aiden Schoel
