Unfilmable 59: Barbarian

How low can you go? I said, how low can you go?

I love listening to this show despite watching very few of these movies. This one intrigued me enough and I really enjoyed it, so thank you! I'm a bit surprised you didn't mention the most unreasonable behavior which is how AJ is able to clearly hear his consultants while driving in an open convertible. That shit is impossible.

As one of your guys’ black fans, there are dozens of us, I’d like to say I am very glad about the decision to cover Get Out. I think talking about works made by people of color is never a bad thing, shut up straw man, Get Out specifically, even more so because I feel like that movie was made… for white folk? I hope that’s not a hot take but like if that movie can’t start a conversation about race what was it doing? I think it’s about getting people to think and engage in conversation. Us is my personal jam of the three films but Nope makes a really strong case because it has such a strong bother/sister story going on. All 3 are good. The other two just speak to me more. Doesn’t surprise me that in the USA, Get Out made people feel more things because I think it’s really the most relevant of the 3, to white humans? Correct me if I’m wrong I’m just chattin’.

There’s worse stories but this is one of like 17.

Mateus Silva

That’s exactly how I deal with cops. Like exactly. Like I when I was 12 a cop asked me which house I planned to hit while just walking in my neighborhood with headphones in. Like wtf?

Mateus Silva

Aye! How’s it going?!🤘🏾✨

Mateus Silva

Yes!!! Drag Me to Hell was the 3rd movie I couldn’t think of! And tusk! He’s got my heart a lil bit.

Mateus Silva

Justin Long’s small role in Zack and Miri make a porno is the strongest testament to his acting. Take that for what you will. It’s utterly hysterical.

Mateus Silva

I fucking love Justin long! He’s a bit of a scream king these days with this, jeepers creepers, and a 3rd I can’t remember… but The Evolution of Horror podcast, the only other podcast I listen to besides you guys and Shit Town, has a great interview with the director over this movie. Fuckin dark souls ass dungeon had my mind spinning when I first saw this. There’s a really interesting intersection of horror and comedy between this n Jordan Peele’s films and so on. I think the timing and the sense of the ridiculous can easily teeter towards humor or horror.

Mateus Silva

I was very curious about this movie, but its themes hit a bit too close to home. I could never make it past the first ten minutes, so I really appreciate your summary and analysis. Thank you! I suspect that Detroit may have its own special circumstances, but in Philadelphia the police won’t respond to direct calls to the neighborhood station. They’ll tell you to call the central 911 dispatch, which is constantly doing triage and may never respond. The way residents handle emergency situations is to call one of their neighborhood block captains, who will get in touch with their personal contacts in the police (or their contacts at a local news station, if need be). Unfortunately, there’s no way someone from out of town would know this, which I suppose is how horror movies happen. I sometimes feel that America is one big haunted house, but I try not to think about it too hard.

I need you to know that when I heard the song used for this opening, I out loud hollered "OH, FUCK OFF"-- incredible choice lmao. can't wait to listen to the rest of this

JACKAL ALLTRADES

As someone who listens to this show to experience horror vicariously, I just wanted to say that "The Mother" appears visually in my imagination as Auntie Ethel's Hag form from BG3. Thanks for the ep!

I’ve actually never heard anyone say they don’t like Justin Long. It’s usually the opposite. I don’t feel any particular way about him as a person, but he does find his way into really great horror movies. Drag me to hell, barbarian, jeepers creepers, and tusk which I would love to hear y’all talk about.

We aren't doing a guest, we're providing a reading list/reference list. We explain it in the episode. -GB

Duckfeed.tv

man, as one of your presumably few not-wight patrons I REALLY hope you guys have a black guest for Get Out next month. (Also, great episode! No complaints!)

The Duke of Nebraska

The use of the Ronettes "Be My Little Baby" is also a double reference, not just to the obvious but also because Ronnie Spector was an abused prisoner in her own home for years. I heard the director call this out specifically in an interview.

About cops in Detroit: it's the tested tradition of protecting wealth. There's constant patrols and a quick response time downtown but once you get into residential neighborhoods they'll say they're sending someone and it can take hours, if at all. It's a known phenomenon for cops to be scarce here. Kinda plays into that shitty "can't have shit in Detroit" meme. Don't think they'd outright dismiss someone tho.

Austin

The Redford theatre is so cool. I seen a screening of Nosferatu with a live organ playing once, unreal.

Austin

Also I have to say having had to call the cops for a women who was being abused by her boyfriend in the parking lot at the apartment complex I worked at, they handled the police situation pretty close to accurate. The force in Detroit is so thin, they may not have said we’re not sending any one but they might as well. On average in that area after you make the call you’re going to be waiting hours.

Looking forward to listening to this in a bit. The movie was so so to me but I live not far from brightmoor and actually used to deliver pizzas in the area in my youth and worked a security job at an apt complex in the city at one point as well. It was incredibly surreal to see it as the location and to know some of the exterior shots were actually filmed there. Brightmoor(I guess technically Detroit but they are right against each other) is also the location of the Redford theater(the big old world movie theater they filmed in in It Follows).

Itsxalive

This episode whips ass!

TheSandwiche

Appreciate it. I have a handful of those smaller bad stories too! (Like riding around with my black best friend and we got pulled over. The cop straight up asked me if I was okay.....) but yeah, what happened to my brother made me realize that, until the entire law enforcement system of the US is rebuilt with proper values in mind (any society needs law enforcement and civil protection), treat every interaction with cops as if they have rabies and could snap at any moment.

Matthew Shaffer

Holy crap

Christopher Williams

That is horrible. I'm so sorry for your brother, and I'm glad he's doing better. I have a handful of bad cop stories, but nothing nearly on that level. Fuck cops.

Holland Hume

When i saw this film I knew it was a classic in the making. Can't wait to check out your thoughts.

Mcav86

I will say one time my my mom called 911 when my visiting brother was having a seizure and the cops came and tazed him and stomped on his head because in his post seizure confusion he jerked away from them. They wanted to handcuff him and search for drugs. My brother publicly tried to press charges and a week later his dog was shot at night while sleeping in his doghouse. I no longer feel like movies can ever portray cops as too evil or bad. (My brother has no lasting injuries and is happy in a different state with a beautiful family!)

Matthew Shaffer

I LOVE that you guys are covering this, downloading and listening now! Thanks guys!

E E

Omg yes!
