Real Lich Hours 10: Shattered Sanctum (Part 1)

It's ironic, because a sanctum should be safe.

Long time listener, first time patron etc; I found out y'all were doing this show when I went to go do my 2nd BG3 playthrough listening to BFS chat funnily enough. Had a hypothetical for you guys: Through mods or otherwise, what's a Forgotten Realms race not accounted for that you would want to do a replay of BG3 as? I myself am running an Aasimar mod because my character flaw in life is loving to play Final Fantasy-style "Belt buckle Twinks" in tabletop almost as much as my DM loves killing off my aforementioned Squalls Lionheart. Keep up the always-awesome work and I someday look forward to hearing your takes on the Act 2 "Temple of Narrative Importance" wink/wink/nudge

So… here I am. Level 2-3 going straight from the first goblin encounter and recruiting Wyll to rescuing Halsin. I didn’t even know how to long rest and sneaking around this camp, learning to throw with the scrying eye, learning that one person can be in turn based combat while 3 others are walking around was just eye opening. Recruiting Halsin gave me a big damage sponge to lure goblins around a corner into a big bear. Fighting Dror was a nightmare. If I wasn’t a monk who had tons of movement i’d’ve been screwed. Amazing dungeon? Also this is a great time to talk about how the music in this game is completely motif based and the Druid camp theme is played here with a sinister undertone. It’s fuckin awesome.

This probably won't be a special but I can definitely rotate in some music talk as a segment! -GB

Thanks Harrison!

I would love a special on the music of BG3. I think it’s fantastic, as great as the DOS2 ost. Especially the boss music, Twisted Force, absolutely rules.

One neat thing I found recently was in the cell where Gut tortures you I would break free and throw her into a winch just above inside (I can’t remember if it was holding up a boulder or whatever). Suffice it to say she would crash into the floor and break a hole into an underground cavern that leads straight to Minthara’s pet spiders. You can then talk to the spiders, and convince them to eat the gobbies. It was really funny how it went about and also really neat.

I have done this area so many times (don’t ask) and still continue to find more things. Roah Moonglow And her exploding barrels in the back. Fun story So when I first played this I had no idea or clue what I was doing So I just went at this with - I’m going to pick up everything I can or open everything and steal it (so I can get more money) I thought you could open these barrels and quickly found out , no you can’t. I ended up hitting it with my everburn blade and well Small room and exploding barrels.

I have two little thoughts about this ep! I find it cool though maybe unintentional that Gut goes hostile after you cast silence on her. Having cast on a few folks throughout the game, I think she might be the only person (or one of a small minority) that goes hostile. I think that makes a lot of sense considering she obviously has ~evil motivations~ that players might not know about, so if she were to find herself suddenly unable to call for help or use magic, it makes sense for her character to freak out and attack. Also, I’ve seen people online be sour about all of the failsafes Larian put into the game like Korilla saving you if you get chained up (but also some stuff in Act 3) as forcing people into a particular story, or not being responsive to player choices enough. I think Korilla is a great example of how Larian has thought about the motivations of their characters throughout the game. To me, it makes total sense that Raphael would send someone to save you, considering his motivation for you that’s revealed much muuuuuch later.
