Unfilmable 60: Get Out

And if you don't like this movie? Well, then I suppose you can... get out!

Our analysis of Get Out shouldn’t be the only (or even the first!) that you hear. To provide a broader perspective, we’ve assembled this list of pieces written by critics of color.

Unfilmable 60: Get Out

Imagine being looked at and actually seen as a person, not a list of stats that has nothing to do with you. I can't.

Cinnamon Toast Cunt

For my part, the newer ending is objectively better, narratively because it follows logically from the "real" police not believing Rod, meaning there would have been no reason for the police to show up there, and thematically because, in fact, the very short-sighted and irrational racism that allows the police to fill their role as the violent enforcement arm of the white supremacist state also frequently gets in their way. While fascists and other violent enforcers of capital are frightening and powerful, they also self-sabotage and create weaknesses for us to exploit.

This movie dude… this movie did not stick on me like it did the zeitgeist when I first saw it. Not cause i thought it wasn’t good, i think it’s great, it was just a hard watch. So many of my unspoken or undealt with anxieties from growing up a POC in Orange County California were just on display. So many lines in this movie capture the REAL LIFE experience of my life. “You must be a beast” “Do your parents know I’m black” are just too real. And to like launder the intention of this cult with people’s real life obsession and intentions with blood and bone structure and race was legit terrifying. I think of Django Unchained and the callous unrelenting cruelty of wealth running fighting pits, real shit also. And it’s just ah. A nightmare. To see a society, western society, become aware of this stuff? It truly is social Lovecraft. The dad in this, also in Cabin in the Woods is a spot on performance. I know 30 of these guys. 🤣 Thank you guys for saying Google is a nightmare. The algorithm can kiss my ass. And as always thank you guys for your tact and eloquence. 🙏🏾🤘🏾❤️‍🔥

Oh god Skinamarink. That was the worst piece of shit movie I've ever tried to watch.

Drake Kincannon

Love this show! Thanks as always guys.

Is a cult using a deer to cause a car accident the new signifier of excellent horror? Looking super forward to Skinamarink. When I watched it last year, I couldn't stop thinking about what a great Unfilmable episode it would make.

This movie hit like a freight train the first time I saw it, and its impact has hardly lessened on subsequent viewings. Just a hell of a debut by Jordan Peele.

also there's a part in this episode where Gary says, "it follows" and man when are u guys gonna cover It Follows lol

I want to appreciate how great body snatchers are as a theme. I think I like everything I see them in. One of the great monsters, often overlooked but punching well above their weight. I missed the connection here and that might be because I typically associate them with a tipping point in which the characters realize there are more aliens alive than humans. I guess that happens here too, now that I think about the reveal. This definitely follows all the snatchers beats.

Really appreciate the tact and sensitivity with which you cover this film, It’s definitely not lost on your black subscribers 👍🏾

goodass episode on a great damn movie, ive hoped you guys would cover this (and next months pick!) Something i love about the climax of Get Out that only heightens the catharsis is there's almost no dialogue after Chris starts fighting back, not even a quip. Even before they actively try to do this horrible thing to him, his patience with their white bullshit has been worn to a nub. Theres nothing left to say to these shitbags -- they just Gotta Go

sleepysmiles

Promise I'm not saying this just because it's been bigger ticket subjects, strike content was suuuper good, but show is on an unbelievable run. I think people say "eating good" or somethin'.

I Have No Hole, and I Must Butt

Something Gary said about Barbarian exactly encapsulated how I feel about Get Out. It’s not an insult, and Gary didn’t mean it as one either, but this movie has always felt very tight/clean to me. I think that’s why I prefer Peele’s follow up movies. Maybe they aren’t as good as Get Out, but I like them more because they are more ambitious.
