Bonfireside Chat 292: Gravesite Plain (Part 1)

We need as many graves as you have. No wait, that's too many. The Gravesite Plain more than lives up to its name, being the entry point for a land that draws in all forms of death. Some of the most recent deaths, however, are the victims of Messmer the Impaler's bloody and fiery crusade. This week we talk about the DLC's first hours, including the Scorched Ruins and their attendant Furnace Golem.

I assumed that you were suppose to hide from these wicker things. It sets up some pretty cool scenarios where they can walk right by and not see you. Very very up close and terrifying

Jessie joy

Could be mistaken, pretty sure those veils around the tree are the same ones in the Ever Gaol

Jessie joy

Fantastic idea w the map. Thank you. It's as valuable as erdtree favor +2

DigitalDusto

I like the map you guys!

Oren Genkin

Hell yeah! Been a real big bummer of people defending her genocide in this game with all the real world revenge war bullshit surrounding us.

Mystic Referee

My understanding is that they'll do ANYTHING for daddy's summies.

Chapel Collins

This may just be me but I thought that the canyon you spawn into for the DLC looked almost identical to the starting spawn in DS3’s cemetery of ash

Quin Tutor

Or fell one?

Austin Mathis

ACTUALLY RELEVANT TO THIS EPISODE: I definitely went right immediately (I always just hug any wall/cliff and stick to the right when I’m sweeping an area, I just hate the feeling of walking straight in toward the middle when I’m passing things on both sides) and got wolverined many times before turning to this episodes covered area, and the first thing I said when encountering the first curseblood Hornsent guy was “those fuckers from DS3!!!” I thought it was the exact same design and everything because of that way they jumped on my head. The big furnace boy I felt SURE was an environmental hazard until much later when I saw lil aggy fall one I said rohh? Like scooby doo

Austin Mathis

Genuinely have no one else to tell lol

Austin Mathis

(Sorry to be commenting my reaction to the game in real time rather than the episode area)

Austin Mathis

The day they patched the difficulty, I opened the game and beat the final boss who had me stuck. I probably would’ve rather beat them at the difficulty I had been stuck at, because picking up the controller and first trying it post-patch just felt like the patch beat them. On top of that, my summon struck the final blow after I had already died. I came back to the Grace and memory left there, and couldn’t accept that it was the final boss (I previously didn’t realize it was lol) so….. not a very satisfying feeling realizing I couldn’t climb those steps on the other side of the arena. Buummmer of an ending for MY playthrough (not narratively, just gameplay-wise)

Austin Mathis

I missed grabbing this incantation, thanks for the heads up.

Drew

Great first real episode . I have made good progress in my playthrough and I really like where the story is going and I'm excited to hear you both get into it and make the vast connections back to the main game. Although I do like a few complicated fictions like Metal Gear or Twin Peaks, I felt Gary hard when he said basically said this was pushing the edge of what I can take. This podcast is huge for helping me wrangle all the narrative threads. Also appreciate that I can hear you both vent about most of these bosses as well. I also started using a shield for the first time ever in ER because of the bosses (although the duelist shield is pretty damn cool). So many cool weapons in this DLC in particular.

Drew

By the way for anyone using a faith build - pest thread spears absolutely melt the furnace golems

Daniel Runfola

This season is already so great, guys! We are so back

Daniel Runfola

Marika comes out of this like shit, big time. It's huge GRRM cycle of violence stuff. -GB

Duckfeed.tv

Also, not only does the game scream grrm, but messmer does in frankly incredible particular. It's vibes, but I swear to god I feel it.

Goldie

Really refreshing to hear respectful & sympathetic coverage of the hornsent. Personally, I think the usage of "holy war" & "crusade" in regards to the violence waged by the Erdtee here points to the colonialism thread as present in the dlc (Not saying you guys ignore it, just stating my thoughts 😭 Tone can be hard to read on the internet). I honestly left shadow of the erdree feeling worse towards Marika, which I genuinely consider a story success of the game. Something interesting about the wicker men is that- I saw this in a Bonfirevn video- they contain the corpse of a dragon, specifically not an ancient dragon, which is very interesting when looked at in the contexts of future revelations in craggy areas. Love the map!

Goldie

The map is amazing! Can't wait to listen

cojiro123

Just realizing the spiral magic is a Guran lagaan reference

Duff

I only ever killed them with the critical strike to the face. I think I had to knock them down twice. I never even tried the heavy pots.

Chris Hudson

And just a correction RE the Fire Golems. The ones (most of them) with the rope ankles - once you have knocked them down, you can visceral. Also the resource you get from them is rare but also there is an area on the map where they infinitely respawn so not that rare once you know this.

Ak1raTron

Love the map, it would be very cool at the end of the season to see this patchworks version on the elden ring map with all the BSC markers and doodle on them. Cool t shirt idea

Ak1raTron

I love the map <3

Mateusz Swietoslawski

The little drawing is incredible

Mateus Silva

Ha, I appreciate the map guide.

Joe Binson

Good to have you back. I wouldn’t normally come with corrections as such, but as it featured so heavily in the episode I feel duty bound to note that you can just visceral the furnace golems twice once staggered to kill them instead of using pots.

Oliver Tripp

Very cute map doodles. Glad to have the boys back for another from soft season.

Richard Cochnar

Be careful, saying Decroded is addictive! -GB

Duckfeed.tv

p.s. I love love love the little map doodles!

Kathryn

This episode opens with such an evocative description of the Scadutree! Returning to the game after listening to the episode, I felt that I was able to better appreciate how strange and beautiful the Scadutree actually is. Also, unironically, "decroded" is my new favorite word.

Kathryn

Thanks for the map inclusion guys! It really helps me know what you're going to cover in the episode before listening

Kalem Wedemyer

Beautiful! Thanks for the explanation Kole! I could listen to a whole albums worth of that style 😁 Very nicely done!

Passsty

Oh, and I had no idea you could do the fire thing with the normal fire guys. During even one of their partial staggers? Or only when they fall all the way down?

Micah Tillman

What a helpful map! Really looking forward to this season. I've been doing a full replay of the whole game (even doing all the catacombs and caves again). The "New Items" tab makes it really easy to keep track of items when reading through lore. Already I'm finding a few things that are standing out to me with the advent of DLC knowledge. Currently, I'm trying to keep an eye out for anything that might tie the Curse Ending to what happened in the Lands of Shadows. (Curse Ending = Vengeance Ending?)

JackelZXA

Needle Knight Leda: She pronounces her name "led-uh" (as in, "I led, uh, like a thousand dudes into battle once"). What throws me off if the "Needle" part of her name leading me to expect "lee-duh" Cloth stuff: Quelaag says that the drapery over the Shadowtree is a baldichin (see Marika's bedchamber, Fia's blessing, etc.): (1) https://youtu.be/DXHgH52P1Jw?t=175 and (2) https://youtu.be/k5ecJREcd08?t=467 The second vid there connects the tree drapery to the building coverings but just based on still images, I think. I like Gary's interpretation of the building coverings as a kind of burial shroud. Probably not mutually exclusive though. Curseblade enemies: Somebody pointed out that their basic pose (hunched over, arms out with two circular weapons to their sides) looks an awful lot like diagrams of the female reproductive system in a school textbook. Weird for a bunch of ascetics to be posing in a way suggestive of procreation/fecundity. Not weird for the team who made Bloodborne to be interested in making the female reproductive processes intimidating.

Micah Tillman

Yeah, I enjoy making the little doodles. - K

Duckfeed.tv

Love the hand drawn Wickerman Fire Giant and Sharpy boi. Will these map guides continue throughout? Will you be hand drawing other enemies or npcs of interest?

Chad Laing

I've checked out the audio in a few places and I'm not hearing any problems. Have you tried to see if it happens on another app? - K

Duckfeed.tv

I played it! You have a good ear because it's my acoustic guitar tuned to open D minor (the saddest of all keys, makes people weep instantly). I'm only fretting the highest string, sliding up 2, 3, 5, and 7 (E, F, G, and A). The outro theme is the same tuning and notes, just fingerpicked. - K

Duckfeed.tv

This isn’t the first time this has happened but is there a reason the playback on the last couple episodes sounds like a record or cd that is skipping? And is there a fix for it?

Adam Ferenz

Random place to put this question, but that guitar track in the intro, who wrote/played it? And is it in an open tuning? If so, what is it? I've listened to every episode of BSC and always wondered. It's an awesome piece of music, and this seems as good a place as any to ask! 😁
