Bonfireside Chat 293: Gravesite Plain (Part 2)

Our coverage of the Gravesite Plain continues as we venture between its southernmost tip and its northernmost reaches. The path along this road introduces us to the elite Black Knights of Messmer's forces, our first meeting with Miquella's followers, and a village overtaken by a curse that makes people into bugs. Also, your ol' pal Wolverine might make an appearance. Bub.

You can destroy those worms with holy damage. And the entire thing I think is intentional is that you can kill them easily and get both flasks replenished. So you need to decide whether or not to kill innocents to help yourself

Everyone gets got by the screaming birds sooner or later I hit this dude right off the bat. Jumping greatsword attack. That’s it. And hard as fuck. Mr solitude. And that status ailment talisman would be nice to beat the guy you need to get here lol

I appreciate this so much! Ty

RIP Moore and my questline. I killed that bug quicker than shit when I saw him! “Oh… here’s an enemy I hate that I got the jump on…” … Moore invades followed by deep regret and frustration.

Not the Snikt!

My problem with the Mausoleums were that I'm usually playing though as a caster and none of them are enjoyable in that regard (like 2/3rds of the bosses in the DLC but still)

So, there are two screamy birds (both owls) in the forest to the right (east-south-east) of the Gravesite Plain site of grace. If you run directly from that site of grace into the woods, you pass an arch on the right and the first screamy owl is on the next arch in front of you (which is kind of leaning away from you). If you then turn a bit further right (south-ish) and head up the hill to the edge of the cliff, there is another arch with a campsite behind it and a corpse with an item. The second screamy owl is on that arch. I've killed both of them (I usually don't kill the birds in Elden Ring, for some reason), and both drop an item. But I've only been able to access the first (the second one died on top of its arch and its corpse stayed there). It's a slumbering egg. Is this what owls always drop? The third owl I have identified is on the road from the "Bridge Leading to the Village" site of grace (which is east of Bonny Village and the Whipping Hut), heading north-east through all the wolves to the furnace golem with the protective anklets. It's sitting in the middle of the road. It also drops a slumbering egg. Haven't found another one around it. And I'm sure there are others. We need Zullie to dig into the files and find out what these birds are called

That bird got me as well! They were on some specific statue that I thought was special and wasted a lot of time inspecting

Yesss the bird shriek, it scared me many times (in more places than just here) and I thought to myself “I need to remember to say something about this on the BSC episode”. Also, very satisfying to hear you call the cross maps useless, I somehow felt guilty for not using them at all. Lastly, since this is technically the episode with the new combat weapons, I will submit my complaint here that yeah, they really discourage you from actually using those (stand no chance) and that was a bummer.

Love this show. I’m comparatively new to Elden Ring and recently binged your coverage of the base game. The game initially enthralled me in a way that I hadn’t experienced from a game in a long time. I have to say though, the lore component of the DLC left me very frustrated, and some of the baffling decisions made by the writers made me retroactively alter my very high opinion of the base game. The DLC writing is completely plagued by issues like the second larval tear description you guys brought up. I now think that it’s likely that the promise of a DLC served to conceal some of the very real writing and consistency problems in the base game. A lot of the lore YouTubers laid out a far better and more convincing narrative for the DLC than what we ended up with, which imo feels more like a late season of an anime which has run its course than anything I might imagine GRMM would come up with. It’s looking less likely that Miyazaki and co. laid out a grand mystery for us to solve, and more likely that the writers were just confused and forgot a bunch of stuff. IMO the Elden Ring community has a habit of attributing meaning where there may very well be none at all. There are no lore implications of the new larval tear description - they just fucked up.

Loving this season, dlc, and most especially the wonderful maps!

Hornsent Bro looks like a baby Wormface to me, but much less puke-y

Micah Tillman

My assumption has been that the shriek-y birds (whom I loathe, one and all, because they stress me out) were a new crystal lizard thing, where if you could figure out which ones they are and kill them before they escape, you could get something nice. But I haven't tried and don't know why I assume that

Micah Tillman

I also heard the weird bird scream. A few times throughout the dlc actually, though I could never pin down which birds made them

Eli Leslie

I’ve heard it at least one more time across the northeastern bridge from the Bonny Village

Backhand blades are crazy. For Keen Dex it has S scaling and for Bleed it has a very high proc rate. The Weapon Art also seems to do a lot of stance damage, feels similar to the Katana Ash of War. For me, I played dex in the main game and would cause bleeding but had almost 0 in arcane and went Keen over Blood. But now in the DLC, to counter these hardo bosses I have leaned fully into Bleeding and added arcane. With backhand blades and a Mimic Ash also hitting the enemy I have managed to keep playing aggressively and counter how annoying they are by melting their HP bar. However like the boys I have had to use a shield for the first time in ER nonetheless.

At least where the first owls are, there aren't nearby owls. It's the only time I've noticed THE SHRIEK. -GB

Loved our un-buddy Hornsent. The voice acting of all these games is wonderful & SotE is no exception (CANNOT wait for the mountain!!) and his dialogue during (REDACTED) was incredible. The utter depths of emotion, the anger & sorrow. Something I found quite interesting about the black knights is visually they evoke maliketh, with the black & gold armor and the plume resembling his mane. It's fascinating to think ab a rank of messmer's army potentially modeled after his mother's brother-weapon, especially considering that familial connection. Cannot wait for next week's episode! A bonny time indeed!

Goldie

The little maps rule. This is an excellent addition.

Victor

While I liked the Nameless Mausoleums I'm bummed that they seemed to take away possibly interesting arenas for those bosses. In the trailer you see the Blackgaol Knight in a forest as well as another one in a field of blue flowers which would have been a beautiful setpiece for a duel. Instead they're just confined to the generic catacomb room so it makes me wonder why FromSoft decided to pivot in that direction.

JQ

As someone who aspired to be the Potentate of Jarburg, I used to make a point of not attacking the Living Jars either. That has changed,

Kathryn

I’m proud to join Kole in heaven, as it never even occurred to me to attack the blue worms. They’re all good boys. 💙

Kathryn

Yes that bird!!! I got jump scared by it as well, and assumed it was a perimeter alarm to the other enemies.

Jeremy Espinoza

I definitely got spooked by the screech bird multiple times (still never beat Wolverine. I had a hell of a time fighting most of the npc fights in the dlc!)

Richard Cochnar

Love the hand drawn maps!

Chris Lees

I thought the birds are owls, and that when they shriek, it aggros nearby enemies? I believe I've also encountered the owls in different areas of the shadow lands, but nothing was as memorable as that first area. I struggled with Logan quite a bit so early in the DLC and learned to snipe those little bastards before they could shriek and bring Wolverine over to shred me in four hits.

culturalsnow

Oh awesome, thanks!

Gm47

Thanks for the heads up. We’re aware of a difference because I changed something on the back end with our recording process and we’re still adjusting to it. Upcoming episodes shouldn’t have this issue. - K

Duckfeed.tv

Hey guys, love y’all and the shows! Just wanted to send you a heads up that the past few uploads have had a decent amount of Gary’s mouth sounds show up on recording. I hate to be that guy to point it out lol, I just have a bit of misophonia so I noticed it happening. Not sure if there was a change with the editing or noise gating or something, but wanted to make y’all aware.
