Audio Hosting Outage

Hey folks, K here. Our primary audio hosting service (Fireside) is on day three of being completely unable to accept new episode uploads. It took two days for them to even acknowledge the issue.

This has affected the release of the Watch Out for Fireballs! episode about XCOM 2, this week's episode of The Level, and it might affect tomorrow's releases of Real Lich Hours and Bonfireside Chat to the per-show feeds (if you get all of the premium content through Patreon's feed, you should be unaffected).

I just wanted to let you know here, since not everyone uses social media.

I'm pretty pissed about this. Fireside has been neglected by its creator, with promised features not being delivered after years of waiting. The only thing keeping me from uprooting the network's hosting and going somewhere else is that Fireside is the only hosting provider that provides a way for our Patrons to get authenticated per-show feeds. No other host does that, and Patreon has been deaf to our calls for them to build a similar feature over here.

I leaned on this feature because a lot of people were only here for one show, and weren't willing to sift through the other premium content. Some people are only interested in a single show. And while it would be lovely if everyone wanted to listen to everything, I can see how the single patron feed is a bad delivery method for working through a single show at a time. So we've stuck with Fireside and the nontrivial amount of support work we have to do when it doesn't serve feeds correctly.

However, I can see the numbers of how many people subscribe to those feeds, and it's not a lot.

I want to test something. Please give me your honest feedback. If we got rid of the per-episode feeds, would you unsubscribe from the patreon? My asking this isn't a sign that I'm going to make a big switch tomorrow (we'd have an internal discussion about it first). I'm asking because I don't want to do something that will endanger the livelihoods of Gary, Gwen, and myself.

So answer the poll below and let us know.

Bonus points if you can tell us about an audio hosting service that will use Patreon credentials to serve secure audio feeds only to those who are current with their membership. I'm always looking for this service, and I haven't found anything that doesn't require gambling our whole livelihood on changing how we fund.

Hey guys. So I have a friend that I've reached out to about this who is a programmer of sorts. He said that creating what you need is not technically difficult and I believe he'd be happy to do it for you. There's just some logistics following the creation of said program that would need to be discussed/ironed out. Can I possibly get the 3 of y'all on a Zoom call or something to introduce you? I am also going to reach out direct through the Duckfeed website.

Gregory Martinez

Yeah I have to second this. I discovered the rest if the shows because they're all on display here on Patreon. I've found Adaptation Decay to be my favorite, although I discovered the network through WOFF.

Gregory Martinez

I too will join the 99%

Shane Storey

There are umbrella subscriptions where I would very much like individualized feeds and can't get them to work (Slate, say) but while I don't listen to every pod you do, I enjoy enough of them that I intend to, eventually. So I've never bothered with the separate feeds.

Barac Wiley

The fact that I use a general feed with all the shows has actually resulted in me giving these other shows a try, loving them, and including them in my regular podcast rotation - so there.

Ben Harvey

I love your work, so I would 100% stay subscribed. But all the shows getting dropped into one feed would be a significant hit to quality of life for me personally, so I'd be sad to see them go.

Borabora

I prefer per-show feeds, but I wouldn't unsubscribe if they went away. Love your shows way too much to do that!

Anders

I think if they add brackets to the short version, they become much easier to search/filter.

Ashton Green

Great point. Doing the short versions of the podcast names on the big feed is a detriment to searching

Drew

I dont even know what this means, but I will stay subscribed for my favourite show!

Asko Häivälä

Dont use Megaphone or Spotify for podcasters for hosting under any circumstance , trust me im an inside source lol

Alex Brewington

I checked in with him and pinecast doesn’t integrate with Patreon, so not really an option. Sorry for the noise

Andrew

Reduced my pledge a while back simply for monetary reasons. However the separate feeds meant that I still have adaption decay coming in. So you need to police the list on the separate feeds better to kick us free loaders off, or just drop them entirely.

Jared Obermeyer

I like all your stuff, but I do like the per show feeds because it's easier to sort and listen to historical stuff, and easier to listen to what im in the mood for, but it would not be something I would unsubscribe over

Andrew LeBlanc

Hasn't affected me until this point, probably won't notice a difference. I just appreciate all of the quality content you produce and want to support what you do. Judging by the vote count, I'm not alone in that. Thanks, Duckteam 💛

JT

I can’t think of any real reason I’d ever unsubscribe. The Duckfeed crew is the best!

Mogki

Not sure of the nuances of this issue, but will definitely remain subscribed.

J

Tbh I don't think I even know what per show feeds mean. I don't think I'd ever unsubscribe though.

Randall

I use Pinecast for my podcast and have zero complaints. Granted, it’s the only service I’ve used and we’re pretty small so can’t vouch for something at Duckfeed’s scale but definitely happy with it for my purposes at least!

Drew Edgar

I subscribe to support what you do not because of specific features. BUT I do think you should have asked the question “would you still listen to the podcasts”. Without per show feeds I would probably actually stop listening to some of the stuff; I really like to be able to just binge a few episodes per show at a time, and it would be too difficult to figure out where I left off

Jack James

Yeah, staying subscribed regardless.

Will Phillips

I do really appreciate the per show feeds, but it’s not a deal breaker

Will Black

It would definitely be a bummer, but it totally wouldn’t make me unsubscribe. Just makes it a bit more likely that I’ll end up missing shows accidentally

Pete Snorrison

I may not listen to every single show, but I love the firehose because I love the Ducks. And who's to say I won't listen to them in the future? Was very handy to have Adaptation Decay episodes just appear in my podcatcher after I upped my pledge.

Robert M Fenner

100% would keep subscribed. The joy of listening to you folks far outweighs the very slight annoyance of searching through a bigger feed.

Andrew Parker

Same

Joshua Garrity

I’m gonna keep listening to Duckfeed comment no matter what

Jordan Osborne

You are the only Patreon I am subscribed to, and the only one I have ever been. The only other creator I would consider is Noah Caldwell Gervais. I mostly listen to Bonfireside Chat but I love a lot of episodes of WOFF! And RLH has been great. I will also take this opportunity to say that your WOFF episode / walkthroughs of Quest for Glory and Star Control II were a dream come true for the 12 year old me living in this 40 year old body.

Justin Zode

I'm sure there are podcast clients that can do filtering. Part of the issue is that the show names aren't given special highlighting to make them easier to filter. When I tell my podcast client to just list the ES episodes for example, it'll include all shows with the letters ES in their title, plus all the Exquisite suffering ones. I tend to filter a show then queue up a batch of just one show, based on my mood.

Ashton Green

I just use the tags on Patreon which works fine, wasn’t even aware you could subscribe to a specific show 🤷

Keith Huston

I really do like the per show feeds as it’s convenient for me. But even if those go away I’m not going anywhere.

Taylor Trimarchi

I fully support moves to make your lives easier/better! Been around for years; will remain til Azathoth takes us.

Jimmy Wilkinson

Shows all slap - love the firehose feed!

Corey Hiscocks

Here I am. Here I remain.

Cyrus Rogers

To misquote Walton Goggins, "I do give a fuck about these ducks." I can't imagine caring about that. But also, you guys are the only Patreon I subscribe to so this is basically a Duck feed app for me anyway.

Chapel Collins

Quoth Sifl and/or Olly, "whatevuh"

Nobody

im in the same boat andi wonder if other podcast apps woudl imrpove the experience? especially searching for Exquiste suffering in the premium feed is kinda useless since "ES" as a string appears so often. that said, i was not aware until this post that there were different feeds for each premium show so I'll obviously stick around :)

ExquisiteCapybara

Ride or die

DAVID VISCONTI

you could host the show via a crackling telephone feed and I'd still tune in

Stephen Baron

Not going anywhere guys, keep up the fantastic work

Astral11

Sorry you've gotta deal with dumb headaches but I'm sticking with you no matter what

Matthew Allen

I remember either downloading from here for listening through the app here for years, the only drawback was I wasn't able to count the premium episodes towards my end of the year stats to rep the podcast in my Spotify Wrapped. Anyway, I'm not going anywhere. Excited to listen to XCOM when it comes out.

Kay Francis

I feel stupid, but all this time I could have just a feed for BSC?

blackfarley

I honestly didn’t know there were per episode feeds so I’m good! Here for the content. Also while I mostly listen to BFC…over…and over…and OVER again lol I do randomly listen to other stuff on the network too and it’s all great.

Mike Rangel

Does per show mean like the tabs that are at the bottom of the episode description that will bring up all the BFSC episodes?

MIKEISTKRIEG

That really sucks, and sorry to hear it. Do whatever’s easiest on your end—I’m not going anywhere 🦆

Jeremy Brown

Will continue to support you guys whatever tech issues need to be made. A friend of mine runs pinecast.com - I don’t have firsthand experience of the service but can vouch for the dude’s integrity and technical chops

Andrew

I’ll still be here, even though I like the per-show feeds. One request, if I may: If I can tell what episode is what show, it’s aaaall good on one big feed.

Håkan Ibrahim

Count me among “would be annoyed but would stick around”! The per-show feeds fit much more with my listening habits but ultimately I am here for the shows!

Matt

I didn't even know there were per show feeds. I use Spotify premium feed and it aggregates it all. Only reason I'd stop patronizing you all at this point is if I end up real poor, or the quality goes. Y'all are, honestly, the best games critics out there. I don't agree with everything you say, and we share very few political beliefs, but you are both excellent at your analysis, humor etc . You've honestly spoiled other podcasts for me.

EtcEtcEtc

I prefer the per-show feeds, but I wouldn’t stop patronizing over it. Do what you have to for hosting and I’ll roll with it.

Christopher Langevin

Also in the "would be annoyed, would not cancel" camp. I'll also say that the per show feeds have never worked that well - any sort of similar feature on a different service might have higher uptake.

Jared Garst

When the per-show feeds were first mentioned I got pretty excited about it, but I think back then all the shows on the entire network, even the non-premium stuff, came on one and the same feed? That was the main issue for me, and when the feed became premium-only, going through the hoops for getting the per show feeds just seemed like such a hassle that I never bothered.

Patrik

As a user of per show feeds it will definitely be a bummer but definitely not enough to unsubscribe. I’m here for the content and I don’t mind doing a little extra work to get it.

Warren Michalski

I do everything through Spotify and use the fire hose duckpremium and follow woff/abject/BQV. Whatever yall decide I’ll def be here.

Joseph Hoffman

The only time I ever use the per-show feeds is if I'm specifically marathoning through shows, so having to take an extra step to listen to each episode in sequence won't be a deal breaker for me. This situation blows and I'm sorry you have to deal with it; whatever decision you make, I'll still be here.

Kelerak

I use Podcast Addict, and I genuinely prefer being able to separate the feeds. You guys make a lot of content and not all of it is precisely labelled (not a criticism, but it does make it hard to search for things in Patreon since it's search feature is trash, or hard to find just Exquisite Suffering if there's no unique searchable) so hunting stuff down later can be tough. But ultimately if it's such an uphill fight to keep separate feeds, eh switch. It would be a bummer, but I'm not going to cancel over something so minor. I'm in it for these bangers, gotta know more about Super Baseball and Double Dragon the movie!!

Eric Jedraszczak

I don't use the per show feed! I just get the firehose. I won't lie, I didn't listen to everything at first, but I now listen to all releases because the schedule is great for my work schedule. Unrelated but does this have something to do with the Sir Brante audio ending abruptly?

JACKAL ALLTRADES

Exactly this!

picklefactory

Seems like more work for you to keep dealing with this than for the few people who just want one show to just swipe away the shows they don't want to listen to. Even put together.

SindrElf

i have no clue what the per-show feed even is. i’m here EXCLUSIVELY for the Duckfeed Firehose Experience 💦

Patric Fallon

I use the single feed so I'd be unaffected by this change. My other podcast Patreon with a lot of content (System Mastery), I do the same. Honestly, I looked at the setup guide for the per episode feeds and said "Nah." There were 13 episodes in July which doesn't feel like a big "swipe away" tax. And honestly, there's only one podcast in my premium feed I skip (usually). I find searching for particular episodes in my app (AntennaPod) to be pretty seamless: but it is critical that Duckfeed use the tags (BSC, ES, etc) Honestly, your stuff is the top of my listening week at work so I'm more bothered by not being able to listen at all like this week's WOFF than having the "firehose." I say this not because I'm grumpy about this week but to tell you how much I appreciate your work.

Abrahm Simons

Hell, I'll double stay. I prefer a firehose feed over the segregated ones

Nicholas Prior

I like the per show feeds because they help me keep organized in what I've listened to from the different shows, but wouldn't stop me from subscribing!

Cari Kaufman

Thanks! I just use patreon lol

Zakarie Hickman

A feed for each show (like most normal podcasts are) instead of episodes of different shows all in one big feed like duckfeed is set up.

Drew

Staying, even with the uploading issues. Here for the content, and to support creatives that I like

Chad Laing

I quite like the per show feeds myself, but it won’t be the end of the world if they go away. I can’t speak for every one but a huge part of the reason I don’t listen to every thing on the firehose is I just don’t have the podcast hours for it. You guys post so much stuff if I listened to every duckfeed show I prob wouldn’t have time for any other podcasts. Also for things like Lich Hours I really dont want to listen until I have the time to play it.

GrumpyGrizz

It be a tiny pain, but when you do good work, it's not too much effort to go looking for what I want :) switch to whatever you want as long as it's reliable haha

Michael Harmon

Per-show feeds are one of those things that are nice to have, but aren't going to make or break my decision to remain subscribed. Switch to a new host if it's more reliable and/or makes your life easier.

Benjamin

I have only ever listened through Patreon and through Spotify and I honestly didn't know there was another option. I'm not going anywhere!

delirious

Sounds like a similar story with romhacking.net, which was also run by one lone weirdo who refused to make any attempts to change or properly maintain the site

Fatt Mox

Definitely not a dealbreaker but I can't pretend having separate feeds the past year or two hasn't been a big QoL improvement. But if it's not doable anymore, so be it! Best of luck sorting all this out.

Toby

I use the duckfeed Spotify feed for premium shows. Not sure if that is a per show feed haha… but no amount of platform issue would make me unsubscribe.

Nick Sayers

Appreciate the transparency on the issue. I use per-show feeds for the non-premium shows and the Patreon firehose for premium since that's been an option and that's worked for me just fine. Y'all do great work, so do whatever you need to do on the hosting side; I'll stick around.

Eric Van Fleet

I’m working my way through several shows in specific orders. I love the per-show feeds and would lose track of what I’ve listened to if I had to switch to a firehose feed.

Joseph

You guys are getting per show feeds?

Chandler

I like the per show feeds for organizational purposes , but it’s not a deal breaker to go without it.

Ben Sapatka

The separate feeds are nice for my podcast app but I think I’m already subscribed to a firehose for RLH since I’m also getting BFC episodes. Whatever works best for y’all because I look forward to the “Hey Gary, Hey Kole” at least once every week.

Chris Saunders

If you do switch to single feed, we patrons could use something like SiftRSS to make our own single-show feeds. Somebody on the slack suggested it the other day.

Shane

A feed dedicated to each show. For example you can search Real Lich Hours or Bonfireside Chat on Apple Podcasts and find them as independent podcasts, as opposed to the Patreon model of just combining all of the network’s content into a single feed under “Duckfeed.tv”

Aaron

Hi Kole, I didn't know it was possible to get per-show feeds. I just subscribe to the patreon feed and search through it for what I want and that works a-OK for me.

George Leak

What is a per show feed?

Zakarie Hickman

I prefer the per-show feeds (even though I'm subscribed individually to nearly every one), because the way each displays episodes is a little cleaner in Pocketcasts. I frequently revisit old episodes, so a cleaner interface is helpful to me. That said, it's not a deal-breaker; y'all make amazing content and I'd put up with a lot of minor interface annoyances to hear it. This patron isn't going anywhere, whichever route you choose.

Christian S

I’m so used to the full blast faucet feed from the old days that I don’t think I even realized there were individual feeds.

Richard Cochnar

As long as we can still get everything in the premium feed!! I'll never go back to using the patreon app.... (Spotify listener here)

James Woodmaska

I didn't mind having all the content in one feed back in the day before the per show subscription model.

Gabriel Tindall

Same

Drew

Second this, but I’m really happy with a mixed feed because I sometimes stumble on things I wouldn’t otherwise assume I’m into. Keep up the great work, platform be damned.

Matt Honeycombe-Foster

I do think the duckfeed single feed with everything method has always been very messy but I understand Patreon is dumb so I am never mad at y'all for it. I do think it must be very confusing for new subscribers. Too bad there isn't a more direct system in Patreon. And to give some feedback, the issues with sorting through a giant scattershot feed are not always "hey i hate this show", its hey I don't have time to play game X rn but I'll come back to this (I'm doing that with the entire RLH series right now but it happens with individual WOFF episodes too) or I haven't watched this obscure movie but I'll find a way later or hey they are showing it at my local cinema next month so I'll wait to listen. And then in these situations, going back through a scattershot feed is messy and can be difficult .

Drew

As long as you keep putting the show initials in the episode title it makes no difference for me. My podcast app lets me do a keyword search within a feed, so all I have to do is type “BSC” if I want a feed for bonfireside chat

Eric M

Didn’t know the per show feed was a thing. Patreon feed is the way to go

Austin Bradford

This is another problem with it. It’s impossible for us to communicate about. There are instructions all over the Patreon but all they do is mix people up. - K

Duckfeed.tv

Tech issues are always the most frustrating things to have to deal with and I want to thank you for going through the undoubtably extremely frustrating extra work you’ve had to pull with this shit. I can’t speak for everyone but I am definitely planning on continuing my subscription until I’m bones given all the entertainment Duckfeed has brought to my life for literal countless years. best of luck getting this all sorted!

Karl Germ

Will keep supporting. Keep on rocking it, guys.

Aaron

I didn’t even know there were per show feeds for the Patreon stuff

BRETT ALEXANDER

Honestly I’m here for the shows, they’re top notch, I’ll sift if I gotta (and the sifting isn’t a slight by any stretch, it’s more like “I’ll come back to this later” for me)

David Pritchard

I only ever listened to things right on Patreon even though it is an absolute nightmare to find anything

Deanna Kerry

Do what you need to guys ❤️ we will still be here
