Bonfireside Chat 294: Gravesite Plain (Part 3)

This week's episode has us cleaning up the last remnants of the Gravesite Plain, or at least the portions on the near side of the Great Bridge. We delve into our first Gaol mini-dungeon and learn a horrifying secret about the living jars, before venturing into the western mountains to meet the Formless Mother's most devoted followers outside of the Mohgwyn Dynasty.

Man, that jumpscare bird was one of the first things I stumbled across after alighting on the Gravesite Plain. Had no idea what it was, and assumed it was something to do with the naked feral man who soon came out of the woods to fight me. When I found out it was just a bird, I was low key disappointed, I admit. I would have loved FromSoft to make more of a sound effect like this - it felt very new and original, perhaps not unlike Blaidd's howl towards the start of the base game

I love your little doodles on the map. So much more comprehensible than the dogshit little maps people keep giving you in the DLC. They are worse than useless.

Enjoyed this week's discussion of the new gaol (jail? j-hole?) and all its charnelly delights. But what even is a 'saint' in this context?

I just realized that there are two separate occasions where the Blood Fiends are eating one of their fellows alive. (The first is in Prospect Town.) There will be one or more of them kneeling around one of their companions. Unlike with the Leyndell knights who appear to be chowing down on their fellows on Mt. Gelmir, however, you can target the "victim" who is being eaten, and they will get up and attack you. In both cases, there's a priest Blood Fiend at the front of the congregation (as it were), as if it's all some sort of ritual. Reminds me of all the controversy historically about whether Christians were cannibals because they talked as if they were consuming the flesh and blood of Christ every Sunday.

Anyone else thought of the parallels between the Gravesite Plain and the dry lands in Ursula K LeGuin's Earthsea books? The permanently cloudy sky, the dry grass, the ghost people and the waist high walls along the roads matches exactly how I had pictured the land of the dead when I read the books.

Victor

It gave me "trying to look at the logo of this black metal band and read it" vibes

Drew

100% killed the Forager Brood on reflex.

I dunno, getting thrown into a big prison pot with a bunch of other non-saints and turning into a big gooey mass together… That’s somebody’s kink.

With regards to the Bloodfiend’s Arm and Amygdalan Arm, the Ringed City DLC had the “Preacher’s Right Arm” as a stave. Couldn’t find an arm related weapon in DS2 or DS1 DLC, but I’m hoping From continues giving us arms as weapons. Considering one character discards their arm, it’s a shame we didn’t get that one

I think she looks like a woodcut of a mermaid on a rock. So, basically what Kole sees, I think

I've got a question about Moore and a particular pot for later on. Remind me to ask. Also, thanks to Gwen for including the Demi-human Swordsman Whatshisface music! There are some repeated boss themes in the DLC, and then some really intriguing new themes too.

LEDA: Those Hornsent weren't saints, y'know. I mean, that is to say, they were trying to make each other into saints by stuffing people into jars. Which is bad. So, when I say "they weren't saints" that operates both on the level that they were a mixed bunch and

Believe it or not, on a previous playthrough of Elden Ring I had named my character “Moore” thinking “like Mandy Moore but if Moore were a single name”. To run into a DLC NPC named Moore, I flipped my shit thinking he was supposed to represent a character from a previous playthrough. But after finishing his quest line and looking up the character, realized it must just have been an awesome and hilarious coincidence.

You guys getting annoyed about not being able to see the Formless Mother cracked me up. Like, of course you can't. She's formless bros. 😅

I haven’t listened to this episode yet so don’t know if it’s been mentioned (apologies), but the way you’ve just described them makes me think a little bit of the celestial emissaries. The general proportions of them and their movements have similarities.

The jar innards are an instance of just absolutely fucking slimy body horror right up there in the ranks with insert bloodborne enemy design here. Scared the shit out of me when they came running. There's a way the "main body" so to speak stands that brings to mind just barely being able to bear the weight of the innards, like it's in the bend of the legs. Makes my own ache just thinking about it.

Goldie

true I’ve got at least 50 steamers in my bag, that’s gotta impact stealth

wesley

The maps are SUCH a useful and fun addition to the episodes. Love em, thank you!❤️

It's in a game with literal dung too. -GB

you’ve often talked about which places in the souls series smell the worst but your discussion about the frozen maggots got me wondering about which crafting items smell the worst. First time I went thru Belurat and picked up fly mould i audibly ewwwwww’d. surely that’s gotta be funky in the backpack?

wesley

BSC has me walking around my house repeating the affirmative "Uh-HUH!" in Kole's voice, which is very confusing for my partner.

I love the “here be dragons” style map!
