Real Lich Hours 24: The Trail to Rosymorn

Going to church to pray to god(s).
Granted I'm only on my first playthrough, but I have found that there are a lot of oath of vengeance paladin specific dialogue options.

In my last playthrough I was running a Cleric of Lathander. I was super excited to get to Rosymorn as I expected to get at least a couple of specific dialogue options, something that would recognise that this would be an important place for my character. Unfortunately that didn't happen and whilst I love BG3 and think the writers have done an amazing job with other moments like this, the game really fell short here for me. One thing in particular I noticed was when I went up to one of the Lathander statues before entering the monastery I failed my Religion check (I have proficiency in Religion, must have just been a bad roll), and failed to recognise my character's own god. That just feels super unlikely. Don't get me wrong I had my own personal head canon going and roleplayed like hell to myself the entire time, but it felt like a real missed opportunity.

My understanding is that Marina's husband is the great filter for Oath of Ancients paladins - certainly was the case for mine.

You can justify a lot of things. Be like oh so you’re taking vengeance on that person I’m down for that.

Vengeance Paladin is my favorite ❤️ you can still play half dip shit and a good character and not break your oath. I like to take stuff to much. 😂

Oath of ancients I broke when I allowed Marianna to take her zombie husband. Apparently it’s an abomination and cannot live.

Definitely a skill check when you meet the shepherd so thank you for the advice because now I just wanna go kill him to see if I can. I always avoid him. I’m just nope nope that way to the bigot.

First play through didn’t pay attention when team members said they were allergic to magic. So every magical thing I can think of, I threw at them and died. Twice. 😳 two of them split and the others attacked like four times each. Don’t remember a panther, but I could’ve been playing on easy easy level.😂

Okay so the kolborts. (I don’t know if I’m spelling that right) but I always play as darker. Eventually I’m gonna play an evil play through, but I tried an evil play through and I don’t know I take things literally and I just couldn’t do it even though it’s just a game anyway so when I start hitting them and this run, I’m doing tactical, I can hit five of them before they notice me and just kills them in one hit. It’s just funny.

You also get a book if you’re a Paladin. Unless this is a different book and now I need to go back.

My Oath of the Ancients Paladin (Dark Urge) broke his oath in the most banal way. While questioning the wounded bird by Nettie the healer in the druid's grove, I resisted the temptation to rip of its wings, but apparently asking it additional questions instead of letting it rest was too much, and shortly after the conversation I "felt an emptiness" inside me.
Up until that point I wasn't sure what direction I was taking my dark urge, but decided to role play that moment as being what pushed my character over the edge, realizing all laws were arbitrary, and going full dark.

My Vengeance Paladin had an amazing dialogue choices when talking to Auntie Ethel! The part in the battle against her when she begs for mercy is a great "Punisher" moment

Another *they really thought of everything* example: You can throw a grease bottle at the floor around the statue and that'll make it easier to turn 😁
I'm not sure if the spell works for it, I've always just used the bottles.

7 levels in Oathbreaker Paladin and 5 levels in Warlock with pact of the blade is a very fun and flavorful Dark Knight style build. Very fun for a Dark Urge playthrough in tactician or below.
Going 6 levels in Sword Bard, 2 levels in Vengeance Paladin, and then 4 more in sword bard is one of the most fun builds out there. Also, most of the stuff that would make you break your oath on accident or on purpose is in act 1 unless you are going for an evil playthrough. You'll be good now, you promise! I think the 10/2 split is the best spellsword in the game, followed closely by the 6/6 Paladin / Storm Sorcerer or 6 Paladin / 6 Lore Bard.
Basically, Paladin smite lets you turn your spell slots into extra damage on your weapon attacks. This is really powerful on any spellsword build, cause the big problem you often have with those builds is you don't have enough actions to take advantage of your spells. You are a martial character, you should be smashing. Any time you cast a spell, you are not smashing. Late game, you can find the Band of the Mystic Scoundrel, which lets you cast most of the best spells of the Bard spell list as a bonus action. Throw in the Hat of Arcane Acuity and you basically have a character who can smash and cast like Gandalf the white.
Paladins are really fun for multiclassing because they are so front heavy with their class features. 6 levels gives you most of what's worth getting unless you are going for oathbreaker. Sword bard gets extra attack on their own, so they only need 2 paladin levels to smite more than even pure paladins can smite

I (somehow) never encountered Auntie Ethel or the underdark before Roseymorn, it was a BRUTAL ass wall that almost convinced me I just wasn't good enough to finish the game (even on explorer I could barely get through)

I did a vengeance paladin (Dark Urge) for my first full playthrough and had a lot of fun! It definitely has the most leeway when it comes to skirting the edges of your oath, so you can get away with more on average than the other two. Coupled with its aggressive abilities, I think it's a good option for a first-time paladin choice. I played a very Batman-coded half-orc that multiclassed into assassin rogue, which synergizes beautifully with a certain Dark Urge item for jaw-dropping alpha strike potential. Sneak attack, divine smite, and surprise crits are an incredible combo.

I think classes that take power from an outside god or entity (clerics, paladins, warlocks) work really well as NPCs in this game because the writers could define and script interactions around their supernatural relationships. I'm getting less out of actually *playing* a warlock this time around because the writers couldn't anticipate who my patron would be, exactly, so flavor text or mechanics have to be very vague. I imagine the same is true for playing a paladin or cleric. There is a whole list of gods to choose from when creating one of those characters, and the game can't equally support them all. A tabletop DM doesn't have the same issues as Larian on this front.

There is a book in Moonhaven back in Act 1 that talks about the Paladin Oaths, which gives you an idea on what actions will break your Oath.
