Bonfireside Chat 309: Specimen Storehouse (Part 2)

This week’s episode concludes the Specimen Storehouse, and concerns itself mostly with the fight against Messmer and an exploration of what his whole deal was. What led to his genocide of the Hornsent, and how exactly did Marika screw him over?

I always assumed that the little snakes were propaganda because he couldn't have the bad snake suppressed fully and it shows up as the little ones till the seal breaks

Just as an FYI since it's interesting, you can summon Johlan even before doing all of the Metyr stuff. Did the southernmost ruins, exhausted all possible dialogue and Johlan was available inside the Messmer boss room. As long as she notes they you are doing things which align with that quest line she will show up.

I'm at work rn so until I've the time to geek out hard I just want to say: My theory about Messmer's name is that it's a pun. Messmer, mesmerize, transfix, transfixed as in pierced. Impaled one might say lol

More consolidation is not a good thing, especially from Sony who has a troubling track record of isolating players as much as possible, and mismanaging their other IP like Bloodborne. Imagine how much would have been lost if Elden Ring was a PS5 exclusive instead of something that people on Xbox and PS4 and PC could enjoy as well. That’s likely what is coming if they’re allowed to pursue this monopoly.

One of the cool things about the unused dialog here is that, when I first saw the great rune has been broken message, to me it felt like a world event in a “miquella is taking active actions in the world as I explore” way, and finding out he once would have conversed with messmer furthers the things I enjoyed about how I interpreted that moment. I love the idea of bosses doing stuff in the world at the same time I am and not just a bunch of guys sitting in their rooms waiting to be killed.

I know you guys have lauded the DLC, and it deserves its accolades in a lot of ways. However, don’t you think that the strange quirks of the writing that you point out in this episode are indicative of poorly managed, perhaps last minute, changes in the writing process? Yeah. Why are there 2 (3 actually if you count Rykard’s) snakes? Why is his name Messmer? The DLC is full of stuff like this.

While we’re on the subject of Mesmer, I’d like to plug the 1997 film Cure by Kiyoshi Kurosawa. I loved it when I saw it, and I’ve appreciated it more after repeat viewings. It’s probably one of my favorite movies now. It’s a perfectly executed genre piece with so much more to say for those willing to dig deeper—but it doesn’t insist that you need to. Really just kind of beautifully walks that line.

I thought Messmer and Ranni had the same Ye Olde Englishy sort of way of speaking, which messes with the timeline of where Ranni comes in, or maybe she picked up the way of speaking via Renna? Or perhaps it’s an Empyrean thing. Again, inconsistent.

I don't know tons about it, but I am certain it's not as bad as people are making it out to be. -GB

I need to remember to share this thought again when it's response time, but last episode you talked about how this is one of the first times fromsoft has made you consider what happens to a character's body, and it made me realize that the treatment of the dead is a pretty huge theme of Elden Ring. The wagons of bodies, Erdtree Burials, Warrior Jars, Grafting, Spirit Ashes, Dragon Heart Eating, Ghost flame, those who live in death, and even using animal parts for crafting are a huge part of the game. Also, Mohg's body being mistreated is a very sad parallel to Morgot's body being cradled by his father Godfrey at climax of the base game.

What are your guys thoughts on Sony possibly acquiring Froms parent company? Is it as bad as people are making it out to be?
