Real Lich Hours Comment/Feedback Special

Hey folks!

With Duckstream coming up this weekend, and me being hopelessly underwater, I'm sort of crunched for the next episode of Real Lich Hours. However, I don't want to do a skip week, so we're running a special.

First, I'm going to highlight a bunch of BG3 youtubers I think are cool and valuable, for you to check out. Second, we want your discussion prompts and questions! I'm going to go through old episodes as well for good comments we missed, but if you have anything on your mind, lay it on us! Anything goes.

Thanks for understanding, and we'll be back to our regularly schedule RLH'ing shortly.

My experience with an origin character is that they lose their personality. It's like withers is in control.

I wanted to highlight how great this game is on couch co-op. There are many more bugs however. Have you tried co-op?

Lyall Haynes

I mentioned on a previous episode that It'd be really interesting to hear more about how canon works in D&D in general. Also, how does Baldurs Gate change canon and which of the major plotlines in BG3 are new/existing. Sorry for adding this comment again, I just remember you seeming interested at the time! :)

Poor Jaheira! Mine was that Dame Aylin glitched after breaking Lorroakan’s back and looked like she was dancing. Well, more like bouncing up and down. She wouldn’t stop!

Hey there. I have some thoughts on BG3’s open approach to who can be romanced by whom in the game. As far as I can tell, Larian have adopted the “playersexual” model for romances, whereby any romanceable characters can be romanced by any type of player character, irrespective of gender, race or other factors. This is comparable to the “everyone is bi” tv trope and contrasts with the BioWare model, whereby characters are written as having specific preferences and are only available to player characters who fit that preference (you may remember it differently, but trust me on this one). Thus, a male Shepard who tries to woo Samantha Traynor will be rebuffed as the character is written as a lesbian. As we all know, BG3 takes a much more inclusive approach in keeping with its emphasis on letting players try anything. Even the Emperor joins the party, truly putting the “ick” in xenophilic. In the past, I’ve not found this approach unpalatable as it can make characters seem less authored and more ciphers for player horniness. But I also understand that gating some romances based on factors like gender and sexuality both hampers player freedom and risks presenting a kind of essentialism that doesn’t sit well with many modern gamers. It’s interesting to note that the writers found other ways to shape characters’ sexual identities. Both Shadowheart and Halsin are explicitly polyamorous while others in your party are explicitly not. Apologies if I’m just retreading well-worn ground here.

Question first: have there been any fun/funny glitches or bugs that have happened to you? Now, the reason I ask: The first time I played, when I got to the counting house, "Jaheira" was wearing clown makeup and I still haven't figured out why. It made for a really weird tone in the scene the first time, but looking back it's hilarious. I haven't been able to replicate it since and I was really confused when she didn't have the makeup on for my second playthrough.

Do you have any idea how early you can get Minthara in your party? I think it would be fun to rush the grove quest, and then jump over to Moonrise, grab her, and then go back and finish up all the act 1 stuff - Ethel, underdark etc

Matt DiTomaso

Maybe too soon for this on the pod since it’s endgame stuff, but how do you feel about not being able to use all your companions in the final combat? It puzzles me since you can call in so many allies but not all of your recruited companions. I know you two seem to not be rotating people into your party too frequently, but I regularly use all of the origin characters in my party so it was pretty weird story-wise to have some of them just not be there for the final climactic combat, and not have some sort of story reason (we split up to defend other parts of the city, etc) for them not being there

Maggie Murphy

Dyes, portraits, ingots, and other items I thought would be useful at some point but aren't. What gives?

Joseph

If you could have had one artifact or monster from a sourcebook that isn't to your knowledge in the game show up, what would it be?

Kerr

Favorite way to limit yourself whether it’s playstyle or a specifically elementally bound mage of some sorts?

Mateus Silva

Thoughts on the soundtrack? Any favorite tracks? The Last Light Inn theme is probably my favorite because it reminds me of Rivellon on the DOS2 soundtrack which is one of my all time favorite pieces of video game music.

Ben Sapatka

I’d want something that turns the party into the gang from it’s always sunny. I wonder who would be who

Soulful Bison

What’s a weird novelty mod that you’d want to have?

Soulful Bison

The thing that has prevented me from engaging deeply with most of the old Infinity Engine games is that I never really liked or got the hang of the real-time-with-pause combat. I didn't used to think I represented a majority there, though -- I've seen a lot of RPG fans exhibit a VERY strong preference for RTWP over the years. How important do you think the change to turn-based combat was to BG3's popularity? To me it was absolutely critical, but what's your sense of the overall effect?

Zack Johnson

As stable as the game is, have you encountered any noteworthy/amusing bugs? For me, during a modded run, Jaheira bugged so she was neutral towards the party and enemies for all of Act III. It meant after combat started, she wouldn't get dragged in, and could walk around freely in front of everyone until doing something hostile. I role played it that everyone was just astounded to see this legend show up and would stop what they were doing and start whispering to each other as she got into position until she finally sucker punched someone.

AlanM

What are y’alls thoughts on the upcoming 12 subclasses being added to the game and are there any you are particularly excited about?

Christopher Grunert Pedersen

I love this game. I havent loved a western RPG like his since the original Dragon Age. Great story, great cast and great overall writing. I love how much choice and consequences you go through and need more games like it! NOW! Q - Who has the best ass out of your companions? IMO, its a toss between Jaheira and Asterion, cuz of the model details they put on them. Don't ask me how I know...but I know cuz of that one clothing shop at BG where you get to try on the many clothing options and end up looking through the extra undergarments.

Joe Binson

Discussing broken or overpowered builds you can use to break the game. Favorite combat encounter in the game so far.
