Call and Response: WOFF Dispatch September 2024

Hello! The purpose of this post is to call for your questions and prompts for WOFF! Dispatch. Please respond by Sunday September 22nd (hey, that's Gwen's birthday!) by leaving a comment on this post.

We're looking for two kinds of things:

  • Suggestions for our long-form discussion prompt.

  • Q&A about the shows, behind the scenes details, and miscellaneous (including off-the-wall and off-topic questions). Ask us about games or other media, life in general... You name it.

One caveat we've given in the past: If the question is too personal or gross, we may dance around it and not give a direct answer.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Hmmmm, timestamps for what?

Aw thank you! Gary sent me a fun melody to work with and I arranged it from there. Definitely went all out in making sure it had a lot of different vibes going on.

What makes a good grind in a video game? There’s so many games out there that I want to play but I always seem to find myself clocking more hours into games like Monster Hunter or Terraria. I know Gary is extremely fond of Isaac and Gungeon and Kole can get really into a good management sim. These are games that I’ve tried and just have trouble getting into. So what qualities can make a game perpetual for you guys?

Ethan Hudson

Why is Gary holding out by not releasing the funniest video ever recorded containing geese? Does he hate us? Is he hoarding all of the joy for himself? Happy Birthday Gwen!

I have a prompt for the long-form, and a couple potentially quicker questions: Where do you stand on the idea of video games as an expression of addiction? By which I mean, not as if they have the capacity to drive compulsive, potentially detrimental effects - that seems established as undeniable at this point - but rather in the way that addiction can be more compassionately be looked at: as an escape from pain. While video games can certainly be viewed as a "healthier" form of escapism, I was wondering if there were points in your own life where you felt them sort of taking on the roll of a numbing agent, and where you drew that line of having to come out of it, and likewise if, considering your job and passion for the medium, you would feel comfortable talking to someone you know who you believe is engaging with them to the point that it is causing them harm. Likewise, any thoughts you may have on where they fall on the continuum of addiction generally, especially considering how (like, say, alcohol) it has become entirely acceptable to be a gamer socially. I ask this in part because of my own experience in recovery (and with two addict parents, shout out to Gary who would perhaps agree the watchword is "exhausting" ) , coming to grips with what it is I am potentially doing as avoidant behavior to try and stay dry from the rain in my head. Thanks! Some quickies: 1) What is a piece of criticism, regarding your criticism, that you disagree with aside from someone figuring out the REAL REASON you don't like x? 2) Who do you think Sushi-X was? 3) Where do you see video game development going, as far as crunch goes?

House of Leaves unfilmable: when? (hbd Gwen! love the RLH theme)

Diego Klassen

With the lack of news and communication regarding the development and release of Hollow Knight: Silksong, there’s been “discourse” about what developers “owe” their audience. Much of this discourse falls into the “ironic meme” or “angry vitriol” categories, but at the core I think there’s an underlying question: what do artists owe their fans? Any thoughts on this topic? Any thoughts about silksong and/or the internet discourse around it? Thanks!

mwh

What is a part of a game that you would like to see explored more fully in another game? For example, I love the heavy, deliberate, and consequential platforming in fromsoft games

Harrison Troyano

Hey Kole and Gary, you're both musicians. What initially got you interested in learning to play an instrument? I first started learning guitar because a girl I had a crush on in high school was also taking guitar as her music credit, and I just wanted an excuse to spend time with her. Gary, what does Modridge mean (sorry if it's been answered before or if it's an obvious reference I'm missing)? Love all you guys go.

Malachi McRee

Hey fellow cat-enthusiasts! What music do your cats listen to? Not literally, obviously, but the personas you project onto them! For example: my eternally wise siamese used to only enjoy the challenging sounds of avantgarde composers like Stockhausen, while my bubbly ragdoll loved twee Indie-Folk like Belle And Sebastian. Is this psychotic behaviour? I don't know! You decide. Best wishes!

Marius Magaard

Dearest Gary and Kole -- with the impending release of "Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom" and past titles such as "Princess Peach: Showtime!", "Captain Toad's Treasure tracker" etc., is there another franchise where you'd like to see an existing side character, villain, or minor enemy take the reigns? What kind of game would you want it to be, and how would it differ from the source material (if at all)?

zero dark thotty

Happy birthday Gwen!! You have to fight one cryptid. Who are you taking to Thunderdome?

Gautam Jayanthi

What is the worst you ever injured yourself playing a video game? In my youth, I definitely destroyed my palm spinning the joystick around in the original Mario Party, got gross yellow stuff under my thumb playing Kirby all day, and more recently got sore jaw from grinding my teeth playing Cuphead.

Andrew T

Gary question, (presumably; although Kole if you have advice, please also chime in!) I've played in bands my entire life, but lately I've been at a loss because a very good friend of mine recently joined a newer act I have been writing and performing for and because we have such different styles songwriting-wise we tend to bump heads. Do you have any advice for navigating this locus of beguilement and creativity? Also he is not a paying member of your Patreon and I am. Thanks!

Kay Francis

Happy birthday Gwen! If you could eat/drink one thing from a game you have played recently, what would it be?

Will Cakebread

oh also on the quack stack song Gary says he never had an STD but from all lothario tales I'm pretty sure my dude got the HPV. Please discuss

Hey guys, I'm curious, have either of you guys ever been to Europe? If you have what country did you visit? If not where would you like to go if you get the chance. Loving what you do, stay awesome!

Heibel

Hey Benjamin! I have some suggestions if you want! The band Vulfpeck has helped me during my recent dive back into school (took a 12 year gap myself) but their track ‘Sky Mall’ always gets me focused. Also had a friend tell me that he listens to Mario/nintendo playlists on sound cloud. Can’t go wrong with Hans Zimmer (interstellar, inception) or the far cry 5 track ‘when the morning light shines in’. Hopefully it helps!

SKP

First, Happy birthday Gwen! 🥳 second, I love hearing you guys discuss games/movies. (New sub here) came for real lich hours and stayed for unfilmable. Been replaying Far Cry 5 and the mf airplane ‘boss’ fight against Jacob is making me question my younger self 😂 (again sorry if it’s been discussed) but I’d love to hear your takes if you’ve played it; or someone share the link if it’s been done already. I think BG3 ruined all games for me cause now I just try to burn and smash or interact with everything in other games ☄️

SKP

I would love to hear more about your collab with Noah Caldwell-Gervais. His videos are so high quality and exciting that it is a celebration every time he releases something, and that’s something they share in common with your show. I got into the souls series through my brothers suggestion in 2021 before Elden Ring released, played through DS3 and then Elden ring with my spouse, and listening to your episodes as I played through was such a joy.

Justin Zode

Everyone knows that the best part of having pets is giving them stupid nicknames. My cats, Catbrush Threepwood and Wamie Van Doren have all kinds of dumb names, but lately I'm getting a lot of mileage out of "Brush-o" and "The Wumbler." What kinda things are you calling Greta/Dottie/Pocket/Jessica these days?

Michelle

I'm listening to the Jurassic Park III Abject Suffering right now and you've naturally diverted into piss chat. In that film, the kid has a vial of T-Rex piss which he uses to scare away smaller dinosaurs. When Dr Alan Grant asks where he got it from, the kid says "You don't wanna know." What truth could possibly be worse than what one automatically imagines when someone has T-Rex piss?

Luke Summerhayes, visionary host of the excellent Game Game Show podcast

I don't drink alcohol much anymore as I'm old and I get a hangover after a drink or two. Are you guys into mocktails? Or do you just enjoy sodas or making a shake (banana, chocolate strawberry is my favorite)? I'm 42

Jake O

I almost never do this kind of thing but, for some reason on my first play through of BGIII I decided that my Astarion was a weirdo who had an obsession with bones/skulls and was going to pick up and keep every skull or bone we came across, joke was on me as I had no idea how damn many of those things were going to be present as "trash items" in the game! But I committed to the bit (no idea why). Have either of you ever done anything like this, even minor, in playing a game where you had a silly idea (role playing or challenge or joke, etc.) and if so did you commit to the bit, or eventually abandon it at some point?

Limowreck

As an autistic person, I give you both permission to answer this question without taking a diagnostic test live on air; One aspect of autism that I really love is "Special Interests", which is what it sounds like - finding a particular subject especially rewarding and fascinating to engage with. So, question: If you had a special interest, what do you think it would be, or, what would you want it to be?

Fenreliania

Question for Kole. I’ve been playing the old Rock Band games and I’m approaching the end of Rock Band 2. Have you ever attempted the Endless Setlist in any of the games? What was that like? If not, have there been any crazy gaming challenges that you’ve attempted?

Steven Riddle

I recently took up birdwatching - an old man's hobby if there ever was one. I love it though; being able to identify part of the natural world, even in my own backyard, has given me new appreciation for the sheer diversity even in "mundane" birds like crows and finches. With hindsight I can certainly trace the interests and passions of my younger years that would make middle-age Ravenwood delight at this "dad" hobby; but I can only imagine that telling my younger self that he would someday dig learning about pinfeathers would be met with a less than polite "get the fuck outta here." What about you two? Any later in life hobbies, special interests, etc... that your past self might be surprised to find you now enjoy?

VJRavenwood

Hello lads! Recently 'Dragon Age the Veilguard' has gotten into some heat on Twitter-for spoiling major story content months before release. That, and a gameplay trailer spoiled a major antagonist for the later half of the game. Does intentionally releasing spoilers like these kill hype? We've seen this a lot with movie trailers spoiling the plot, are video games next?

Futz

Hey guys! I've seen a lot of board games based on video games lately and got to wondering what game you guys would pick to be the next adapted to cardboard? Double cool points if you know what type of gameplay it would feature.

Mr. Q

What type of NPC Pokemon trainer archetypes do you think you would be? Bug Cather Kole? Pokemaniac Gary? Etc

Eric

In the past few years I have tried to tackle entire game franchises that were new to me in one go. I got the idea from Noah Caldwell-Gervais's franchise retrospectives, and it's reinvigorated my love of gaming. So far, I've played through all the mainline Resident Evils, Metroids, FromSoft Souls Games, and now am working through Yakuza. If you had the time to drill down into a series in sequential order, what franchise or developer would you pick?

Naveen Sivakumar

hey have you guys ever considered a Duckfeed sabbatical? hearing you talk about working all the time, etc, etc, even though its the best job in the world.... idk I remember one time mentioniung you've never been to europe. yr home owners, go see some old shit. i think the network could survive in the hands of Billiam Hugs for a month. Also can Gwen add timestamps to the descriptions....

Favorite old school horror movies? Maybe from the 1950s or earlier?

Doug Lief

I am looking to run The Curse of Strahd for a few of my friends pretty soon. Most of the players are super new to dnd and ttrpgs. Do you have any tips for running a good game? What has elevated a ttrpg campaign for you guys?

Soulful Bison

Hey guys! I recently started the culinary program at my local trade school, after 20 years of not being in a classroom. Can you fine folks recommend some video game OSTs/tracks that helped get you into the zone? Looking for some fun instrumental tracks (non-lo-fi chill beats to study to) to help me focus while studying.

Benjamin King

What are your favorite varieties of cheese. Are you aged stinky cheese connoisseurs or are you more into the mellow soft cheeses? What is your ideal cracker pairing? Thanks boys

This is a reflection on your last Dispatch discussion about how games teach players. I recently had a try at playing Yoshi's Island---like a lot of us born in the late 70s/early 80s, I "aged out" of Nintendo stuff sometime after SMW, so I had never played its sequel. I was really struck by how much in-game text you have to read to know how to play it. It gives you those text bricks that you have to hit to explain a system, then gives you an opportunity to try it. It's a big contrast from SMW, which gives you all the systems up front to experiment with, and doesn't use text bricks to explain them until after you've had a chance to learn yourself. I figured YI must've the bridge between classic Nintendo "learn by doing" and 2000s Nintendo over-explaining and hand-holding. Personally I didn't like Yoshi's Island much, I got fed up with the text bricks around the time they were explaining egg-throwing, and when I realized how much egg-throwing I was going to have to do I got fed up with the game itself pretty quickly. For me it ended up being a prime example of how not to do in-game teaching. (And PS, I was a bit surprised to hear how much you guys loved it when I went back to your episode on it!) Anyway, thanks for all the great thoughts and discussion!

Happy birthday to Gwen! I wanted to commend you both on your recent episode of Bonfireside Chat with guest Noah Caldwell Gervais. I've always really enjoyed your episodes with special guests like Noah, Illusory Wall, LobosJr, and so on. Have you considered bringing in guests from time to time for WOFF or do you view that as a Bonfireside Chat exclusive type of thing? Thanks for all of the awesome content and for also being super cool people. - Kerry in Texas

KerooSeta

Hey guys! I have been playing The Last of Us Part Il recently, and have really enjoyed exploring and interacting with all of the realistic spaces captured in its post-apocalyptic Seattle. Museums, an aquarium, arcades, malls, a theater, and countless shops have all been surprisingly fun to explore. Especially fun were the times when "off limits" areas were accessible (back stage, within museum exhibits, etc.). Have any games inspired a similar fondness for this sort of thing in either of you? I'd love to see this game discussed on the show someday. Thank you both for the great content!

aidan.j

Have you watched the deathloop golden ending? Does it affect your view of breaking the loop?

Bill

Heya cool cats. What is your Number 1 go to comfort meal, guaranteed to pull you out of any funk you are in.

Jordan and Maya M.

What would be better as a concept, Duckhorns or Guphorns? And can you come up some strips in the series?

SindrElf

In the Super Bomberman 2 WOFF, Gary mentions that Bomberman feels like it "came with the universe (non-derogatory)." This made me curious, what prevalent games or game mechanics feel like they came with the universe in a derogatory way? My first thought goes to light side / dark side points and relationship meters (so I guess, modern Bioware RPG conventions), but in this vein I'm also trying to think of low effort concepts for games like racing games built around time trials or other mechanics that are just so obvious they have to exist in video games, but aren't necessarily fun or good.

Jacob Vasser

You have probably answered this but does the show have an official stance on fan made games? Thinking about how Thief: The Black Parade (despite the funny name) is far and away the best game in the thief series, despite being a fan made prequel. Does the show have an official stance on this kind of thing? Thanks! Love the shows

Matthew Morel

Comic question. I just dove into Day of Future Cast, so I’m sure you answered this down the road there but curious for a lightning round question: what is the best X-men run to start with?

Nick Sayers

I was curious if there are any variables that impact the recording or production choices of podcasts based on how we listeners consume the content? For instance do you make any decisions around listening speeds (1x, 1.2x, etc) with regards to music? Cadence and rhythm of how you speak? If you want to go further, do you have any ideas of things that happen behind the scenes when producing content (be it recording, editing, etc) that may surprise some of the audience to know what happens back there or how it happens? Love the shows and thank you to the whole Duckfeed team!

Jonathan Shipp

Hey boys, a couple weeks ago I was listening to some old Bonfireside Chat episodes and was really charmed to hear Pocket share his thoughts a few times! Can we get a cat update? Any recent kitty shenanigans? Sometimes I miss the random "mrrrOWWWW".
