Bonfireside Chat 304: Cerulean Coast

Wow, now THIS is blue.

Having broken a Great Rune somewhere in the Shadow Realm, we now head south toward the Cerulean Coast, a beautiful region littered with gigantic stone coffin ships. But the path leading there is anything but obvious.

When I killed the demihuman queen the majority of the demihumans had lost their aggro. There were a couple on the far end of the area that were still hostile and a couple that I had done damage to still held aggro, but the rest just cowered.

So sorry, I'm trying to follow in game, and catch up to be current w podcast. I'm sorry it's late, but I don't remember when you guys picked up the map frag piece for C. Coast. Did I miss that in a prior ep, or have you not gotten it yet? Understood if you don't have the time to address this. This map is insane

DigitalDusto

When I can't beat a boss, BB is my go to.

DigitalDusto

leda doesn't want the hornsent to know about gelutol

Sid Menon

I do love Deep Purple.

MIKEISTKRIEG

The Talisman of the Dread is already good, then you find out Blasphemous Blade does magma damage. Free 15% super charge for the most fun L2 in the game.

Love the maps you're posting alongside these episodes. I've sometimes missed in my playthrough a beat you discuss, and they help me go back and catch it. The most formidable adversary I faced in this DLC was the geography itself.

Checked in on the podcast to see where you're covering because I haven't kept up, since I'm still pecking at the dlc, and...My first major stop was Belurat, and my second was the cerulean coast, and I'm looking at the episode list and I'm amazed at just how much I accidentally trotted right past lol I love the way fromsoft designs exploration

(Returning to comment after two days due to life) I'm such a sucker for unreliable narration in these games- not only does it add towards the "filling in the blanks" method but it just widens the scope of the world so much- beliefs and biases and the context of a character's backstory and life experience, baby! Leda is so great in this regard. I find the idea of someone as cynical as her devoting her all towards Miquella's promised age of compassion so compelling, and her zealotry is terrifying- she's so matter-of-fact about it. Desperately need the "Haligtree Psycho" movie where she's killing all the knights before Miquella intervenes. I'm so so so so soooooo fond of the character work in these games and Elden Ring is no exception (uncritical support for Sellen and her dubious methods). I was elated at how strongly SOTE doubled down in that manner- stretching all the way back to Marika and Melina- and the cast is just so wonderful & well done. Can't wait to spend more time with the Hornsent, CANNOT wait to get to Ymir.

The discussion you both had about Moore has me thinking a lot about Moores representation and his/the tarnished's affiliation to the forager brood and rot. His armor, the Verdigris set, is named after the patina that forms on metals via oxidation. This is specifically on metals like copper, bronze, and brass. I think this rust parallels rot, and is the closest a Tarnished can be towards becoming a physical manifestation of rot. To add some other potential connections: The forager brood are insect-like, known to have exoskeletons protecting their soft insides. The Verdigris set, like an insects exoskeleton, is the closest the Tarnished can get to our forager brood friends' physical form. Interestingly enough, Verdigris is slightly poisonous to humans, while rust is not. Even though rust is also another symbolic form of ‘rotting metal’, it is not inherently harmful to humans like Verdigris is.

I'm pretty sure Marigga is pronounced to rhyme with Marika! My take from that is that at one time even demi-humans revered Marika enough to borrow her name into their language and give it to queens.

I told Moore to be sad for ever and stumbled across where he killed himself best moment of the dlc for me

Hurin

Oh sorry, I see you addressed that after I posted

Charlie Frame

Moore is definitely made of bugs like Gowry. If you choose the "Remain sad forever" option, you find his dead bug body with his abandoned armour near the Church Of Consolation

Charlie Frame

I use them interchangeably. Someone got confused when I said console RPGs, or they were being a troll, and they said "Oh, like Dark Souls?" and I turned into the joker a bit at the definition games. -GB

Duckfeed.tv

Just curious but what happened to calling jrpgs console RPGs? I personally have no problem with them being called jrpgs, I just remember it being a thing for you guys at one point

Stoned Skeleton

Tarnished archaeologist has quickly become one of my fave Souls lore-sters. His most recent Elden Ring video makes sense of the coffins as means of conveyance. I am gonna shit if the BG3 podcast becomes a Larian podcast later. Larian and From Soft are the two devs I trust intrinsically at this point.

The comment about the unearthed stone coffin ships made me think of the shadow realm being excised from the lands between. If memory serves, cerulean coast is close to limgrave- I wonder if the ships are a remnant of nokron?

Goldie

Also just slight correction but the dress is red not blue, so I wouldn’t necessarily associate it with the Blue Dancer Charm

Lucas West

Cerulean is one of the few areas in the DLC you can reach from alternate paths, on my first run I descended down the cliff path from Charo’s and then climbed my way up the river, which gave me some trouble. I wish the DLC did that more often, one thing the base game does well is having multiple different paths to get to the same area, like the 3 ways into Volcano Manor, 2 to Deeproot, etc. the DLC only really does it in Shadow Keep and the coast

Lucas West

When I first saw the rune break I thought that it was indicative of Miquella looking out on me from high up in the shadow keep or something. Later, people found unused dialog where Mesmer I think referenced having seen Miquella recently, which makes me wonder if that was intended to be linked to his great rune breaking as an “active world event” but maybe the dialog got cut to because they didn’t like having you be so close behind him?
