Bonfireside Chat 321: Enir-Ilim

This week, we conclude the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC by talking about the divine tower of the Hornsent, Enir-Ilim, where the final showdowns of the game take place. First, Miquella’s followers have kind of a Civil War thing going on, and then we learn the truth about what Miquella was really after…

Great idea!

It would have been pretty incredible to get another True King Allant moment with Radahn. You show up to the decrepit gate of divinity and Miquella, in accordance to his curse of nascence, just has this pathetic half-done Radahn clone as a consort. You put him out of his misery and then can get a Miquella ending if you choose to become his consort in Radahn's place.

Hokey pokey! 😂

This was just a whole bunch of particle effects and bling blongs on the screen, this fight was inscrutable for me. I was done at this point, just summoned two cooperators to get through this. The only accomplishment I felt was that I was finally done with the DLC and could move on.

I felt the same way with my caster. And I managed to do it with carian retaliation instead of getting a gigantic shield. It's still not worth it, though. Criticals do almost nothing to his absurd healthbar and you don't even get the breather you get from blocking. It's just a bad time of a boss, honestly.

"My loyal blade" is all Malenia gets from Miquella. Someone at From hated Malenia so much they just piled indignities on the character with every iteration.

"Consort" Radahn doesn't look like either Mohg or Radahn. He looks like Hoarah Loux (Warrior) cosplaying as Radahn. Specifically, he seems to have the same animation rig as HL(W). The Hokey-Pokey turning animation, where they both shuffle their feet awkwardly (with arms spread), leaning forward (with back artificially-straight), booty thrust out, is unmistakable.

I never thought about it before but now I really think Leda should have been the last fight. The first phase could be the gank squad, but a second phase where an ascended miquella makes her into a more boss-like fight. And then you don't fight miquella, he escapes into godhood as a cannon ending for Elden ring, and setting up an interesting (to me) plot for a potential second game. It would also have the added effect of generating more tears of outrage from the hardcore fromsoft fans.

After a few tries, I hit the "I get it button," which in this case was the power button. Life is too short to grind your balls off on a stupid boss that isn't fun. That's what YouTube is for!

I haven’t made it to Radahn on my replay, but one of my favorite streamers (WoolieVS, he actually took a martial artist build through the whole thing) keyed in on something I personally overlooked…Summoning Thiollier for Radahn is a trap! Ansbach by himself is pretty useful for Radahn, and if you summon your spirit ash before he dies you can keep the pressure off of yourself sufficiently without supercharging his boss hp. It’s a sweet spot that gives you the most advantage without putting yourself at a big serious disadvantage.

As someone who enjoys casters, I REALLY don't like having to re-spec to beat the final boss. I tend to like the final dungeon a bit more than most, and the big ol gang fight right before is a hoot, but unless you're poking from behind a great shield or perfectly dodging everything, it's not fun. I think From listen to entirely too many of the "15 minutes of Sustained Perfection just so I can make 1 (DON'T YOU DARE TRY FOR 2) light attack and back at it" crowd when coding a lot of these bosses. And even then, they had other weaknesses. They can stagger easy, you can get 2 attacks in that can take advantage of an elemental/ status weakness, they end up running and giving you the time to blast them with something. But the last guy doesn't stagger, each swing or column of light is 40% of your HP, and if he backs away, he jumps half the arena away or floats in the air, and if you try to take advantage of it, Holy Nuke or Gravity Bomb that forces you to roll away. It's just tedious and not fun. I admit the mystery of wtf Miquella is doing was kind of cool figuring out, and it wasn't as temperamental as some of the NPC questlines in the main game, but it's a regular FromSoft game/ expansion where every single person you meet along the way either dies by your hand or offscreen. And that leads to no interesting post game "What the hell was that all about" you can get from other games.

Truly sour end to pretty good DLC. Radahn the Reprise is just too much gameplay wise and utterly not satisfying lore wise. The story and the reasoning of Miquella is too ephemeric as well. From has shown that they can make more clear and straightforward story in Sekiro. I would love them to scale down and make a clearer story, that does not come down to sitting on a throne or letting the world burn as they usually do.

I struggled with Radahn a good bit, and it didn't invalidate my *whole* build, i did end up having to bust out a shield with really high holy resist, and i ended up using the antspur rapier so that i could do scarlet rot and bleed on one weapon. I'm pretty sure scarlet rot got my killing blow.
