Bonfireside Chat 312: Church District

You’d never guess it, but there’s still more Shadow Keep left to explore. Approaching from the Bonny Village side gets you into the flooded Church District, an area that calls New Londo to mind. But what lies beneath the water is stranger and more mysterious than the Darkwraiths.

I'm no good with lore, but it seems to me there are enough dots and a relatively straightforward way to connect them. The Dots: 1. Marika was a Shaman but somehow was not stuffed into a jar by the Hornsent (apparently unlike the rest of her people/village) 2. Marika needed access to the Gate of Divinity (or whatever it is), and access was controlled by the Hornsent. 3. There was a "seduction and betrayal" 4. The Hornsent Granddam calls Marika a "strumpet" 5. The Hornsent Granddam gives you the spirit of her dead son 6. Marika would later commit "seduction and betrayal" with Rennala when it suited her ends. 7. Marika apparently needed to pull something out of someone's body and present it at the Gate of Divinity. 8. Marika was made a god by the Greater Will (I think?) 9. Messmer is a snake boy and son of Marika Speculative line connecting the dots: The Hornsent Granddam is the dowager queen of the Hornsent. Her son is the prince who will become king, or maybe is already king. At some point (before or after becoming king) he is leading a mission to en-jar-ify Marika's village, but falls in love with her rather than en-jar-ifying her. He brings her home and declares to his mother that Marika shall be his bride. His mother HATES this, but can't do anything about it. Marika and the Hornsent prince/king have Messmer (who understandably turns out to be "crucible touched" due to his Hornsent father). On the day her Hornsent husband is to be [???]ed at the Gate of Divinity, Marika kills him, extracts something from his body, and presents herself and the substance she took from his body to the Outer Gods instead. A packet of godhood has already been dispatched by the Outer Gods (destination: whoever happens to be standing at the Gate of Divinity and holding/containing whatever the substance Marika extracted from her late husband) and Marika is the only viable receptacle when it arrives. Now she's a god and can start remaking the world.

I like that the Shadow Tree Avatar poses as the Shadow Tree before doing its light ray burst attack

"Will you bee my Scadutree Avatar?" It says "bee" and there's a picture of a bee on it! 🐝🌻

Eric

I would enjoy an unsettling sunflower-and-bee shirt.

I hate the flower boss for deeper, more profound reasons. You're meant to target the head, which is above you and moving all the time, while the danger to you comes from the ground. I don't like when the entire challenge is just "camera is bad". Also 3 healthbars is some bs. My 2 other playthroughs I deleted it from afar with Rykards skulls.

NO MATTER HOW TENDER, HOW EXQUISITE, A LIE WILL REMAIN A LIE!

I had a similar reaction to the tree spirits in the church district where I heard that noise below the water while on those very unstable floating planks of wood and thought something might pop up and get me- I was SO freaked out and a) didn't see the tree spirit and b) didn't get into the part of Belurat where you CAN find them, so I didn't know they were in the dlc at all, and when I found out that's what was under the water all along I chuckled. Huge agree on the design of the Scadutree Avatar & the nonhuman designs in general. Not only is Metyr great, but a particular bug-themed boss in the future who, granted, is partly humanoid, entirely steals the show for me. Miquella's great rune being at the base of the Scadutree, and mapping the shape of his journey and the pit stops so to speak, is so compelling- especially the absence of any hints of his presence in the Hinterlands, especially Shaman Village. Can't wait to get there. Even with Messmer and allllmost all of the Shadow Keep done, there's still so much story & revelations & great encounters ahead, and we haven't even met all the NPCs yet, or gotten to one of the greatest literary references in these games, and, although it absolutely fucking rules, I'm not talking about dragon Moby Dick. Die thou, unsung.. And fuck that guy Queelign!

>first sin *heavy Aldia breathing*
