Bonfireside Chat 313: Scaduview

This week we complete the last of Shadow Keep, exploring the rear of the Specimen Storehouse before killing Messmer’s best bud Commander Gaius, and stumbling across the location where Marika’s whole story began.

So not sure why, but this episode is not showing up for me on the main RSS feed. I’ve checked with others from the BCS channel in Slack, and it seems to be missing for others as well. Just wanted to leave a comment here, as there are others who might be missing it from their feed too.

What I love about the back section of the Storehouse is that you can easily drop down from the rafters to access Messmer, and drop down to get to the rest of the storehouse from the back section grace. The Hippo being optional and also being able to avoid almost all the fire knights is a nice option to have

I believe the reason why Gaius is where he is, is to protect where his home and his wife are. When you move beyond his fight if you kill the albinauric woman she is carrying his pants, so it’s suggested that she is his wife, partner, etc

Makes absolutely more sense.

I wonder if the Golden Hippo and Commander Gaius were swapped at one point, with HIM guarding mesmer’s shadow keep and the hippo in the back feasting on scadutree fragments and just being a big crucibled mutant of a hippo. That might have made Relanna feel a little less of a throwaway if she was literally right down the road from her fellow, Gaius, with both of them guarding the path to Mesmer.

Also- the only person who we see use the minor erdtree incantation in game is Melina. Again, wonderful character stuff happening here. There's smth about how the minor erdtree left in Shaman Village is a sapling and presumably forever a sapling, but a physical tree regardless with divine power, while Melina only uses the incantation, but hers burgeons far larger than any other.

What I love about the "original sin" is that I don't believe it's just one thing, and it means something different to everyone. To me, the original sin - Marika's original sin - is that, in more ways than one, she never returned home again. The image of the Grandmother is reflected in Marika's own, in her statues, her appearance. We don't know what the original meaning of the Grandmother is, only that her reflection has become synonymous with Marika's reign and thus with violence. Marika, as a god, enshrining both jarring and tree absorption so to speak while the jar innards were left in the Realm of Shadow, saving the practices but not the people they devoured. Something that stood out to me is how, unlike its counterpart Dominula, Shaman Village doesn't have a name. I think it died with the person Marika used to be, who bathed her home in the kindness of gold. It's a really amazing story reveal, and a wonderful character moment. The text of the Golden Braid is beautiful prose, one of my favorites. I like how the music is those harp strings, the beginning of the music over and over and over in the eternal bloom of the village. It's apt to call this a grave- it's the resting place of Marika's kindness, I think.
