They've Developed a Game Completely Resistant to Coverage

Well, we can't actually do Project Snowblind.

Last year, I put this game on the schedule because of the Deus Ex connection, and because I had vaguely fond memories of playing the PS2 version. Playing the PC port was acceptably janky up until level 3 or so, when I was beset by constant crashes. I was losing progress left and right. It was too frustrating and I called an audible, vowing to bring the game back when possible.

Flash forward to me coming up with a pick for January 2025. I thought "Oh, let's just emulate the PS2 version of Project Snowblind. That'll work!"

In this instance, I was being God's perfect clown.

PS2 emulation has come a long way but some games just don't want to be emulated. I wrestled for a little while with game breaking graphical glitches but eventually got through those. However, the game is comically, unacceptably blurry. It looks like you're shooting through Song 2 and Coffee and TV (lil joke there, for no one).

I spent a while trying to get rid of the blur and ran into error after error, crash after crash. In no small part, this is because of how absolutely dog dick Google is now, and part of it is because Forums are very frustrating places for tech support. (I find someone who had my exact question. Instead of anyone answering it, they interrogate them as to if they followed the rules before posting. No answers though.)

Ultimately, this is a little loved game that has fallen through the cracks of real preservation. It's frustrating, and an element of preservation that doesn't get talked about much. So, I'm throwing in the towel, and I subbed in a game I've been curious about since seeing years ago, Superliminal. It's been a minute since we did a first person puzzler.

I apologize to all you Nick Frost heads out there. Maybe some day I'll find two cherry PS2s and copies of the game and the will to give this pernicious little shit another chance.

That's too bad! I'm imagining Project Snowblind as a person who lets you into their house and starts chatting but they've got a pot of water and fabric softener boiling on their stove, making the air "fresh" and increasingly bad for your lungs until your survival instincts force you to leave. Some things can't be borne. I wonder now what games you've meant to cover but haven't been able to. Fear and Hunger for the content, there was one that didn't mesh at all with colorblindness, and Snowblind refuses to be playable, but those were all pretty recent.

sheeeet, forgot some short games for the survey: Prey mooncrash (roguelike imsim!) Jackal (nes perfection?)

Was looking forward to this but no worries! Sorry to hear about the frustrating production experience. Looking forward to your episode on Superliminal!

It’s interesting to hear how the sausage is made, in the context of emulation, and playing for coverage. If you’re ever in need of a topic, it might be cool to give an update on your setups.

Superliminal looks neat (and reminds me of an above average late Simpsons joke), so I’m excited for the episode! Is Snowblind Gary’s version of Charlie Brown and the football? :-)

Naveen Sivakumar

this has truly been a rollercoaster of emotions

Connor Plantier

Truly, 'tis a cursed game

Christian S

Blur hehe

Jan Champion

Just as an aside, it was on Xbox as well back then (that's how I played it). Not sure if Xemu plays it but might be worth a look...

Zapped to the Past

That would be awesome, honestly -GB

Friendship ended with Project Snowblind. Now Superliminal is my best friend.

Chapel Collins

Was just about to post the same thing 😁

Passsty

If it's any solace I got the Blur joke.

Kalem Wedemyer

That blur reference got me like "this is my hole! it was made for me!". Abject Suffering episode for "Project Snowblind" that devolves into haunted games discussion.

I'm certain this will get the Nightdive treatment some day, seems right in their wheelhouse. No one can say you haven't tried!

Ewan Laing

A shame, but Superliminal is great (and very short!).

Toby

Me, low key more excited about Superliminal coverage and hearing the specific ways you solve the puzzles

Nathaniel

No biggie Gary. You gave it your best shot.

Geoffrey Vanderlinden

Ooh, I would LOVE to hear your guys' thoughts on Superliminal. Sorry for all the struggle you had to go through, but I'm hyped for the swap-out!

Matt Bixler! Hello!

I just want you to know that I chuckled at the Blur references. Yours, a British 90s kid
