Bonfireside Chat 314: The Cathedral of Manus Metyr

The hands of the cosmos have many fingers, and all of their movements tell a story. But what that story means is up for interpretation. And this week we venture to the Cathedral of Manus Metyr and meet a very strange man named Count Ymir, who claims to have knowledge of the true nature of the Greater Will, the Two Fingers, and the origins of Marika’s divinity. Is he trustworthy? Who knows!? Let’s go blow whistles for him.

Has anyone pointed out that this is the god who abandoned Placidusax?

Listening late, but don’t sleep on crimson seed +1 talisman! Massive boost to estus, hard carried me through Radahn the first go around

A really interesting theory I’ve heard is that Metyr is who Marika plucks gold from in the dlc cgi trailer. Apparently the wound looks similar and the black flame sigil of the godskins also resembles Metyr’s head with the eye in the thumbprint. Could she actually be the lauded “Gloam-Eyed Queen”, as well as the one who carried the Elden Beast through the stars? You guys mentioning she looks like a scorpion…hmmm…the hornsent included scorpions in their customs…Was Metyr the god of Hornsent culture like Marika was for the Golden Order? …Now I also wonder if Placidusaxx was Metyr’s Elden Lord? That would explain how Godfrey could also be “the first” Elden Lord (of Marika, after stealing gold from Metry’s bosom?) he twists his two heads like fingers the same way she does when attempting yo commune with the greater will, and he did have 5 heads (which is how many fingers are on a hand…)

Hell yeah, I'm way into this finger stuff. Couple things: I read the big hollowed out cylinders above the arena as the bottoms of fingers pushing through the world. I basically took it as being below finger ruins. The motherhood themes are super interesting. I don't have a fully coherent theory but I almost see "mother" as a religious title or status to attain moreso than our use of the word, which also changes the relationship between Marika and her children.

I think this episode would have been improved if there was some sort of finger innuendo at some point

Just like me in my early twenties, we've finally reached finger stuff. I was a late bloomer.

I always liked metyr. She's one of the few bosses I liked in sote. And the discussion about turning her head into a club reminds me of how many gods you turn into guns in the Destiny games.

Almost forgot to mention, but Yuri is continuing the tradition of Yuri- names- Yuria, Yulia, Yurie, Yuria.

Sorceress Sellen did nothing wrong! Once you get tenure, most universities require you to demonstrate that you turned at least one grad student into an eternally weeping chunk of undead stone during every biannual review period.

also- I love the Finger Ruins. The lampreys became one of my new favorite enemy designs, I love how they slither around. Fun fact- lampreys (the species) are incredibly, incredibly old. The first ruins I found were the Finger Ruins of Rhia and it was absolutely enchanting. My favorite faaaaavorite setpieces are found there- the petrified "eggs", or stones, or whatever they are. Like what? Fingers being so utterly alien while still being at the end of the day *fingers*... It's good shit. But yeah, Finger Ruins of Dheo had me thinking like "were the lampreys this hard the first time??" Makes you begin to put pieces together though as to how Marika might have made contact. Love how her reign is cosmic horror through & through. Though she is a god-king-tyrant she feels sooo much like a Laurence figure too- by the gods fear it, etc.

Gen Z is trying to cancel Count Ymir?! 🤨 Loved the finger stuff so much. My favorite detail is how Metyr's second phase music incorporates the noises of a black hole, I believe, and also this beautiful call & response in her first phase- I was going to include the timestamp but I think it's actually what was used in the episode, lol. Regardless I think it's at 1:19. Cosmic horror is so good. Her weapon skill being called "Kowtower's Resentment"- love. Weirdly enough, Metyr being a "gleaming daughter of the greater will" might add to why astels are called either naturalborn or bastards (and could even trickle down to the existence of the Three Fingers- if they have been wiped from history, if they had kin once, etc) I can see it as like in-world nomenclature & Greater Will/Metyr bias, what have you. Really really loved the tragedy which was the unit of Ymir Jolan Anna & Yuri. I can almost see Ymir Jolan & Anna as a reflection of Marika Messmer & Melina, in a way. But Ymir is so good. I like how Ymir & Sellen represent different branches of unorthodox cosmic teachings. It's a theory, but I think Iji knows/understands what he does ab the shadowbeast curse from Ymir, when their times spent in the service of Caria overlapped.

Love this episode and this whole cosmic horror story from the DLC.
