Call & Response: WOFF Dispatch May 2025

Hello! The purpose of this post is to call for your questions and prompts for WOFF! Dispatch. Please respond by Monday, May 19th by leaving a comment on this post.

We're looking for two kinds of things:

  • Suggestions for our long-form discussion prompt.

  • Q&A about the shows, behind the scenes details, and miscellaneous (including off-the-wall and off-topic questions). Ask us about games or other media, life in general... You name it.

One caveat we've given in the past: If the question is too personal or gross, we may dance around it and not give a direct answer.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Probably too late here for this month but I just thought of one - when I take the stairs at work I like to imagine myself as a little 8-bit Simon Belmont going up the stairs like the animation in the first Castlevania. Also, when I unload the dishwasher I grab two identical mugs and do a quick flourish with them like I just switched to some dual-weild pistols before putting them in the cupboard. You guys do any dumb shit like this?

One of my favorite parts about replaying FromSoft games is relistening to Bonfireside Chat, and I recently had a unique experience that can only be attributed to listening to old podcasts. Near the end of your Bloodborne season, I came up with a “great” joke in response to one of your non-sequiturs. This was truly a strange experience: riffing with two strangers from the past, adding a joke to a nine year-old conversation that no one, not even the guy in the next stall of the employee bathroom, will ever understand or appreciate. The closest I’ll ever get is from my incredibly patient spouse, who humored my explanation of this phenomenon. This was a lonely feeling, but more so an interesting one that has me intrigued about the ways parasocial relationships affect us today. Have you had any truly unique experiences like this?

Hey guys, I just wanted to write to say thank you for having such a great set of podcasts. I started listening to WOFF during my 9th grade year, and have been in love ever since. Its my 12th year now, and I graduate in 3 days of writing this message. Keep up all the great work. Thank you so much, Brady

Have either of you read The Ballad of Black Tom by Victor LaValle? It’s a retelling of The Horror of Red Hook from the POV of a black man. Victor LaValle is himself a black man and a great horror writer, and he does an impressive job taking one of Lovecraft’s worst and most racist stories and turns it into something compelling by contrasting the cosmic indifference of Lovecraft’s world with racist attitudes in America at the time. I highly recommend it.

What is your favorite part of the RE6 playground? I’m personally a huge fan of Chris riding spring rider and the camera pulls out to a sad man…riding this children’s ride…by himself….with Mini Chris admiring every second of it.

You guys were too harsh on the Chris campaign. Have you never lost men? Ever lose a partner? Nothing is more important than your men or your partner. I hope Piers gives you your punishment.

What are some of your favorite UI/UXes in games? Has a good or bad one meaningfully factored into your enjoyment? A decent part of my enjoyment with Persona 5 was the super stylish UX, whereas a bad one can really get in the way or even make a game nearly impossible.

Hey Gary and Kaye! After letting it collect dust on my bookshelf for years, I finally read the book “You Died: A Dark Souls Companion”. I bought the book after hearing the authors on Bonfireside Chat all those years ago. Crazy to think nearly a decade has passed since then. I thought the book was a charming and fun look at a game that’s meant so much to me, but it did make me stop and think about how my opinion on Dark Souls has changed in the time since it came out- especially in light of Elden Ring. My question is: has the existence of Elden Ring changed or even diminished your relationship with Dark Souls? This could apply to the other pre Elden Ring fromsoft games as well. Thanks! - Julian

Lightning round question: what's the best birthday you've ever had? My partner's is right around the corner and I'm poaching ideas

Any plans for another "7/10 games" discussion coming soon? I really loved that episode and that topic is super fun. It's great to dive in on some loveable messes.
