Adaptation Decay 96: Secret Level

A dark and edgy Pac-Man reboot, a kind of normal D&D story, and also a dark and edgy Mega Man reboot. All in all, I'm not sure the creators of this show actually play video games.

Love Death and Robots covers all kinds of genres, not just sci-fi. Ive seen some amazing episodes that Ill remember forever ...but unfortunately, alot of them do kind of leave you with empty feeling of "What was even the point?"

Other than the creepy little uncanny valley face on the gnome wizard, I enjoyed the D&D episode. It definitely felt like an opening cut scene to a game, so I wasn't disappointed by what it lacked. The WH40K episode is pretty similar, it's an interesting spectacle, and maybe it has allusions to the lore I didn't get, but I think it can be enjoyed along the same lines as the D&D episode.

I've heard that one is good. We didn't watch it just because neither of us are particularly familiar with warhammer, despite how we look. -GB

I watched a few of them. Aggressively mediocre in all regards, even as the spectacle they want to be. The Warhammer episode is a noteworthy exception: the spectacle is actually fun in that one, but spectacle is what Warhammer media DOES. But even that is just spectacle and nothing else. It's honestly just a bunch of commercials but for the general concept of IPs rather than any product.

Oh my god next months episode, I’m very excited to watch this then listen to the coverage

I literally only watched the Armored Core episode and it was powerfully mediocre except Keanu's performance. This only confirms my decision to just skip it

A friend of mine showed our DnD group the secret level episode after one of our sessions recently after he and his wife hyped it up as being ‘amazing’ and ‘a perfect encapsulation of everything dnd is’. I hated it so much I didn’t say anything because I knew I would become a hyper-critical parody of myself, so I’m glad this episode was able to give me some relief. I was having trouble figuring out exactly what felt so bad about it other than none of the emotional beats feeling earned, but ‘it feels like a trailer for an actual play podcast’ and ‘it feels like the example that would be written in an intro to dnd book’ were basically it. Great episode!

There’s always the Warhammer 40k one to love…

Arcane and Spider-Verse are literally the first two cgi animated things that made me go oh this looks good. And like that’s mostly cause detail?

That Mega Man episode wasn’t the worst thing I’ve ever seen, but my god why does he look like an all American girl doll?! I hate the aesthetic of it SO much. Make up ALL the guys. I have the EXACT same apprehensions as y’all about Love, Death, & Robots. Robots I’m so over unless it’s some Mega Man X or Zero shit. But also yeah “adult animation for nerds” is just not something I need in an edgy context. 🤣😂 Said as a huge nerd who loves animation and am an adult.
