One of my favorite bits of Tremere lore: When Tremere (the guy) diablerized Saulot (the Salubri antediluvian), Saulot's soul came along for the ride and Tremere and Saulot basically battled for centuries for control until eventually Saulot won and now possesses Tremere's body. Tremere then started jumping into his children and kicking them out of their own body. Kind of cool come-uppance for the clan that stole the blood.

I debated leaving this comment last week because it was the Malkavian week, but Kaye mentioned wanting to hear about some different Malkavian characters in this episode so here’s two that I’ve spent time with who break the “cosmic jester who argues with dead animals” mold. When I ran Milwaukee by Night, one of my players wanted to play a Malkavian who was afflicted by aphasia, but we quickly realized that that would be very difficult to represent in a roleplaying game, so instead the character of Q would be a mute. Once sessions started the player would only communicate in and out of character, whether conveying dialogue, stating his actions, or asking me a question by writing them down on a small dry erase board, even during breaks. Commitment! The “madness” for this character largely came from my end, in the form of visions as well as brushes with the madness network. I would feed him good and bad information, as well as both helpful and dangerous hints. One time another Malkavian used the network to lure him into a trap. On the other end, in a game set in Philadelphia, I played a Malkavian named Jay. Jay was attractive, strong, and charismatic to boot. He had a little trauma from having a pretty evil sire, and he was a little full of himself but nobody’s perfect. But then because of how V5 mechanics work, after certain rolls he would come falling down from that too full opinion of himself, and become sullen, paranoid, and often even a little abusive to his coterie, sometimes acting out on prejudices he had against their clans. Shout-out to Jay tho, he was a real one, only character I’ve played who diablarized a Primogen. I get that Bloodlines is only going to have 2-3 representations of any clan, and they wanted to play with these tropes to their full extent, but for my preferences, if _every_ member of this clan is a gibbering lunatic who howls at the moon, then that makes the world feel a lot smaller to me. Mental illness is crazy common, and for a lot of us there’s nothing madcap about it.

Tremere is my favorite clan in part because they not only hop splats but systems, getting ported over along with the Order of Hermes when White Wolf acquired the rights to the pre-WoD Mark Rein•Hagen game Ars Magica in the 90s and published its third edition. Ars has continued on its own trajectory since, with a definitive edition of its fifth edition rulebook set to release this year. But it’s frankly far easier to find Vampire or Mage games than Ars, so this legacy crossover lets me indulge in a little bit of my Ars love even when I can’t find four other people who are really into Aristotelian physics.

I was really impressed by the music Gwen wrote for the BG3 season but she’s really outdone herself this time. It’s so good!
