Unfilmable 77: Friendship

What's scarier in this world than trying to make friends as an adult? Tim Robinson teams up with director Andrew DeYoung to bring us an expanded look at the tragicomedy of an I Think You Should Leave character.

The soundtrack, to me, felt like it could've been for an indi adventure game

idk how other duckfeeders feel but I think the "Unfilmable" title would work perfectly well if yall wanted to retool the show to cover movies more generally? I love the horror coverage but mainly come to the network for your commentary/criticism on narrative and execution regardless of genre/medium. Great ep as always, completely forgot this movie had come out

Something I thought interesting: the song, "My Boo," borrows a melody from Stevie Wonders, "Isn't She Lovely," a song Stevie wrote for his new-born daughter. I don't know if that was intentional, as that would be a much more appropriate song to launch into at that exact moment. It wouldn't be an appropriate thing to do, like ever and would still inspire me, like Gary, to run immediately for the closest exit, but the Stevie song would at least be on topic.

Gregory Martinez

If you like Devon, that actor is also in the excellent The Other Two, where he plays more or less the same character.

Conor Fellin

Great episode. As someone with a recent autism diagnosis, the movie unfortunately hit pretty close to home, but I did really appreciate your attempts to understand how this happens to someone

Havent seen the film yet but Listening to this episode made me realize i Think i dated a woman version of craig before 😵‍💫 The experience of slowly realizing that while listening was scarier than any movie ive ever seen lmao

I don't think I could ever watch this movie. Listening to what was happening made me squirm and I eventually noped out of the episode around the time the soap came out. I get secondhand cringe or embarrassment seeing it happen and I can't handle it.

Thanks for the baked potato!

I get that, and don't want to take away anyone's feelings of positive representation. I guess my bugbear just comes from "weird guy" erasure. I don't think that everyone who is socially awkward or inconsiderate has a diagnosable condition irl, just like there are philosophical questions around body swapping that are more universal than the trans experience. If Friendship becomes *about* diagnosing Tim, that suggests laughing *at* him is an immoral act, and sort of ruins the comedy for me. If every story about transformation or bodies generally becomes about the trans experience, there's a lot of universal body issues sort of left on the table. I'm not trying to make there be fewer stories about either of these things, I just want a wider pool, if that makes sense. -GB

For me at least, it seems pretty much impossible to not have people doing the "Friendship and Autism" sort of thing around this type of social horror, similar to how bodyswap horror is almost always sort of embedded into some peoples experience with transness. When the basis of the story relies on someone just being completely unable to understand social queues beyond a binary yes/no, people with things that cause difficulty getting nonverbal signaling are really likely to relate to it. Not hating or anything, but thats just my perspective on it

Thanks for covering this, because I wouldn't have been able to push through the social horror!

I haven't seen Friendship yet, but man I was cracking up in the office just listening to your summary of the movie. I can't wait to rent it this weekend!
