2021-09-08 11:39:08 +0000 UTCI'm really glad you talked about this because it's something I've been thinking about for a while and wonder why artists never talk about it. I always thought about it like taking an exam in school. If all you did while studying was just read your lecture notes, you would probably fail the exam and also wouldn't be able to apply the knowledge to anything else. You have to practice actively recalling the material in order to really remember and understand it. So while using reference is great, if you never put it away, you never actually learn anything.
