Would you consider yourself a Beginner?
Added 2021-10-07 14:30:11 +0000 UTCI've been thinking about whats the most effective way to teach something / learn. I have this feeling that theres a big tendency for artists (esp me) to overcomplicate whats necessary for someone to start off with any topic. Like maybe, telling everyone to start with the fundamentals is actually not the best thing to do...but we THINK it is because in hindsight we see the other things we did as a waste of time. How many artists ACTUALLY started with the fundamentals first? How many interviews have you watched and they said yeah I got started in art with the fundamentals at a posh art school.
Theres gotta be a reason all those "terrible" drawing books we see at school and public libraries do so well. I also often see people's main concern is "what skill level is needed for X" when they are looking to invest in some form of education...but idk how often that really is.
Let me know what you think about this!

Personally, I like to approach all learning on a “need to know” basis. I think a lot of us are afraid to make bad art, so we avoid making the things we want and drown ourselves in courses and books and never truly get started. I think most of the learning happens in the application process, so I like to draw whatever I want and make note of what’s challenging. Then I go look for resources that align with what I’m struggling with and spend dedicated time practicing. That could be content geared for any level. It depends on my level in that specific skill. I’ve found this more fun and it helps me achieve my specific goals faster than “first learn to draw a shape, then learn perspective, then all of anatomy, etc.”

2021-10-07 22:24:10 +0000 UTCI struggle with the drudgery of these fundamentals. I want to draw figures and clothing. If I have to draw one more flying box I will cry. Those bad art books say: how to draw a face in ten steps and by golly you might actually have a face in 30mins. You're putting pen to paper and actively working on something you actually want to create.
