Kurayami Ninja - Painting Guide

Hi everyone! We're back to Infinity, this time with one of the JSA Kurayami Ninjas!

Just like the last guide, this was painted with a mix of some Contrast paint and regular acrylics. Applying base coats is usually tedious for me, so this has been a nice way to skip a couple of steps but still end up with a result close to my usual style of painting.

Hope you like the guide!

I do sometimes—though rarely—use the zenithal highlight as a guide for light placement. Mostly, I use it when applying Contrast paint or when I want to create a colored universal shadow, since it’s just easier to paint most colors over a zenithal undercoat than straight black. If I weren’t using Contrast paint on this mini in particular, I probably would’ve just primed it black, since a good portion of it is black fabric anyway. My black primer is super matte, so it’s not always that helpful when I hold the mini under a light. But yeah, if you’re using something like GW Chaos Black or a similar spray primer, it can actually give you a pretty decent sense of where to place your lights and shadows.

Great paint job! Thank you for sharing this. Do you think you still would have used a zenithal highlight if you were not going to use the contrast paints? Or would you have just put the black primed mini under a light to get a sense of where highlights should go and apply base coats accordingly?
