My Painting Inspiration
Added 2023-04-14 18:33:15 +0000 UTCI've written posts on my blog about Golden Books but I also have coloring books from the 50s and 60s whose covers are painted in a similar style. The characters aren't filled with flat colors like an animation cel. Instead they are painted with shadows and textures that make the characters look extra lush. When I was a kid I wouldn't buy any coloring books that didn't have painted covers because I liked this 2 and a half dimensional style so much. These are the styles I emulate when I do my digital paintings.
Here's one that was drawn by Harvey Eisenberg and I think painted by Al White.

This Flintstones cover was drawn by Frank McSavage and painted by Bill Lorencz.

I don't know who Painted this Howdy Doody.

And here's one by my favorite children's book illustrator - Mel Crawford.

I'll do another post with more Mel Crawford covers real soon.
