2025-01-13 02:30:27 +0000 UTCAs gay people, we really SHOULD know what "pre-code" is. It ain't that hard. And it's especially relevant right now. Pre-Code movies had no restrictions, so movies were able to get away with things like depict our lives as they exist -- with sex, whores who don't get punished, characters you knew were gay, etc. Washington DC, spurred on mostly by Southerners and Catholics, threatened to pass laws about what entertainment could include. Hollywood beat them to the punch by hiring Catholic conservative William Hays to police the content of movies. He developed a code, which spelled out boundaries of censorship. The Hays Code forbade the use of profanity, obscenity, and racial slurs and included detailed instructions outlining how certain topics should be shown on screen, especially proscribing graphic violence, criminality, substance use, promiscuity, miscegenation (inter-racial romance), and homosexuality. When the studio system fell apart, pioneering filmmakers started saying, "Fuck Hays and his fucking code." It spurred the current ratings system and gave us movies like "Midnight Cowboy," "Clockwork Orange," and "Deep Throat." We need to know about this so we know to guard against it repeating. So now, no excuse for saying, "Who even knows what pre-code is?" The answer is, TONS of people, so don't be willfully uneducated. Also, please don't make this another season of Willam savagely going after a contestant just because that contestant explores a different, smarter section of drag than skoochy-wear. If you really believe all drag is valid, then show it. It's a real turn off to hear Willam viciously rag on a contestant he doesn't understand. Don't be a Visage.
