Doctor Who 4x02 "The Fires of Pompeii" full reaction

Always remember to thank your household gods. ;-)

The Doctor was never involved in any romantic storyline during the classic series, so a lot of classic fans took exception to this being changed for new Who. I've never quite understood why they had such a problem with new Who exploring this side of the Doctor, but they quickly became a minority. A very vocal minority, but a minority nonetheless.

I didn't mind the love interest angle, but it is great to have a pairing that is purely platonic. It's such a different dynamic and one that I'm really enjoying!

This episode really begins to cement Donna as my favourite companion. Gone is the soppy love interest trope, and you now have someone who will really challenge the Doctor where necessary. Catherine Tate also shows off he acting chops here, demonstrating she is more than the shouty comic relief of the Christmas special. Incidentally, the Doctor's throw away line early on about "that fire was nothing to do with me" is a reference to the fire of Rome during Nero's reign, which happened to be featured in the first Doctor's second season in 1964. In that story (slight Classic spoiler) the Doctor inadvertently gave Nero the idea to burn down Rome. So yes, it was the Doctor's fault! You watch this show for long enough, you realise it is peppered with these types of references. .

Chris - She and David Tennant have that in common, I think - that great comic timing but also the ability to bring the pathos in a very real way. I'm loving the two of them together. :-)

I feel the same way about stories like "The Empty Child"/"The Doctor Dances", "The Girl in the Fireplace" (which encapsulates everything the Tennant era would go on to be), "The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit" and a number of future stories I can't mention yet. There are certain stories, which combine all the different genres and tropes DW is typically known for in a brilliant way.

...aaand Donna cements herself as a worthwhile dramatic character beyond the comedy. I love this, it feels like classic Who to me in a way but delivered with modern pacing. The monsters, the moral dilemma, this one is a great capsulization of what Dr Who has to offer and would make a great show demonstration episode for a not-fan.
