It did seem very different, and I mean that in a good way, because with the same Doctor/companion combo, you still want each season to be distinct. If this is the scale of the premiere, I have no idea what I'm in for the rest of the series! 🤣

2020-09-11 05:50:11 +0000 UTCI remember not being sure how I felt about this opener either, it seemed like such a weird launching point for a season, considering it felt more like a climactic story we'd normally see at the end of a season. The Doctor playing guitar and wearing sunglasses was a little concerning too, after what I felt was an underwhelming Season 8. I remember honestly thinking "oh no.....have we really just jumped the shark?" And it was also about the point where Clara started to feel like she was staying a bit past her welcome.... Not that I didnt like her, but there had been so much drama about her not continuing to travel with The Doctor anymore, and now it seems like a full commitment....again.... And on top of that, nobody knowing why Missy was still alive or what the hell her deal was. There were just a whole lot of minds not being made up and feeling like "not sure where they're going with this...." It was a weird first episode for sure, that I think I felt better about after the 2nd part. But I do agree, the story felt a little bit too much like familiar ground, without really taking things in any particularly new directions, which I'd hope for from a new season. It felt like more of a step sideways rather than forwards, which is a weird direction to go at the beginning of a Season. And yet, despite all of that....Season 9 went on to be my favorite season next to 4. I know I ended up liking almost every other episode even more than this, even though I didn't HATE these. And already in this episode I can see the difference in tone and direction and writing from the last season that feels nearly as drastic as the shift from S4 to S5. There's so much more nuance because of the breathing room granted by two partners. To me this is the most fully matured incarnation of New Who.
