I agree, and that's one of my favorite things about science fiction - the way it can hold a mirror up to our own lives and present issues in slightly different context. This was a great series in that regard!

2020-09-30 08:28:03 +0000 UTCI was visiting my mom when this was on tv. I had DVR’d it at her house and watched it the next day. Mom is not a SF fan, so she kept herself occupied with other stuff in the room while I watched. I didn’t know she was half-listening until that line about “What do you think [standardized tests] are for?” She made me stop the show and rewind so she could be sure she had actually heard such a monstrous thing correctly. I keep telling her that scI-fi isn’t just BEMs and ray guns, that the best of it is about our society now, both bad and good, but she never believes me.

If I was told I had to choose to kill children, I wouldn't do it. I'd rather kill myself than do it. That's just me though.

Yes I agree the low achievers thing was very elitist and a lottery would be preferable but you can't pontificate about how giving up the children is wrong to take the moral high ground without facing the other side of the moral dilemma which is seeing all the children killed along with the rest of the human race. (Now speaking/ranting to the room) That is why this episode is so good, it raises truly emotive issues yet then contrasts them with the detached cold decision making of the politicians which naturally repulses us yet if we are intellectually honest we know that the only choice is pragmatism. It makes us look into ourselves and the human condition unless we invent fantasy solutions outside of what is presented as a cop out. That is mirrored in today' s society - so many people think they have the solution and see the world through blinkers (blinders) depending on their political dogma, usually not even conclusions they have arrived at through deep introspection or applying critical thinking to knowledge sought out but rather passively absorbed from their choice of "news" channel while never sullying themselves with unpalatable realities and certainly never offering real solutions beyond protesting the way thing are which is in large part down to their failure to ever take on responsibility for their own failings because they think just believing in abetter world makes them a better person. They then let everyone else know what a good person by virtue signalling over social media how awful the latest xxxx is. and all without ever a hint of self awareness. I actually think this portrayal of politicians as far too kind. They are actually far more duplicitous, disingenuous, Machiavellian and amoral than presented here. I would go as far to say as some are evil sociopaths but then they are human beings and society is full of wicked people many of whom truly believe they are good. PS Just so you don't get the wrong impression I love your reactions. You declined your soap box but I got on mine so you are in credit there. :D
