We actually got our first indication of this back in the season five mid-season finale; where we saw that, even though Team SHIELD returned to the past, the past/present/future that Tess and Flint had been born into continued on. Oh, the joys of the multiverse.

2021-12-10 15:14:15 +0000 UTCIn season 5 the team erased the PATH to deke's timeline from their timeline by changing the past but his timeline is still out there in the multiverse. They can never go back to his timeline because it can not be reached at that point. If they went forward in time they would existed in a new future they do not recognize. That is what is happening here. Deke's theory is about how to avoid changing the past so that when you reach the future it is still recognizable. They know that they will still exist regardless of changes to the past because deke is the example but their future if changed will be lost to them and be a different future if they do as they are going a linear path forward not cross multiversal like the Avengers in Endgame.
