I was contacted late last year by Imugi looking initially for a tour poster which later developed into the album cover for their next release. At the time they specified that they wanted a piece of two of their namesake- Imugi - in Korean tradition, the immature form of a dragon which matures under a frozen sea for a thousand years until it emerges fully grown.
I offered them a sketch sheet with a selection of possible designs accompanied by a thumbnail sketch with a proposed composition featuring the two emerging from the ice. WHile my earlier designs were more like a generic sea serpent they specified they wanted traditional Korean styled dragons - it was extremely interesting researching the details that set Korean dragons in the South East Asian family of dragon depictions apart, such as the precise number of toes ascribed to them.
I also produced a handful of variant colour palettes and typography treatments which i've included here because I still have a personal preference for some over the one that was eventually chosen - Working with a client often means compromising on your personal vision for a piece versus theirs, but I was still extremely satisfied with the final result as seen on "Dragonfruit" and they were a pleasure to work with.
