MP Evas - Sketch stage

Yesterday while the net was still out I decided to get stuck into the October poll piece - the Mass Production Evangelion units! I talked a little already in an earlier post about the design process here but it came down to wanting to showcase them both at rest and in flight, definitely emphasizing both the organic aspects and the wings. I had the production book modelsheet open the whole time for reference which was extremely helpful, but I purposefully diverged on some points and other elements will be added later at the rendering stage.

At this point in my process the sketch is more about structure than finished design detail - a lot of my decisions are made at the rendering stage. I definitely envision the wings here as spilling out in a "flood" of featherlike structures rather than literally being avian wings in design and i'll be taking an approach to them at rendering closer to baroque sculpture than an anatomical study. The next stage will be laying down colour and beginning the rendering process!
