2024-03-20 16:52:57 +0000 UTCI first saw this show last year, it went into my number 2 spot after finishing it. For me I thought in the end Tenma actually didn’t save Johan and he basically just dreamt of their encounter in the hospital. I think there are a few approaches to how the ending is. Johan is either dead, he was never on the bed and Tenma imagined him there and the end where the window is left open is the more accurate shot. It could be seen also that Johan left the room to go on some journey. Or it could just be more of a symbolic end for those who see Johan as a monster that monsters are still out in society. There are several interesting YouTube theory videos/character analyses for Monster, and some are long but all worth watching. Lastly, Naoki Urasawa did write a sequel story called ‘Another Monster.’ I think some fans translated it online to English and a pdf may be available. Maybe worth checking out. 2024-03-19 22:20:15 +0000 UTCTotally agreed about the origin of his fucked-up world view. The mom had to make "Sophie's Choice", but the repercussions are compounded by the fact that the twins, Johan in particular, have no identities. Johan dresses as his sister even though he's a boy so they can evade detection by Bonaparte and company. Eventually they're found. His mom struggles with choosing who to give away and it breaks him, leaving him to wonder if on some level she only chose Nina because she thought it was him. The fact that she would even make a choice between them. Nina comes back and tells him everything and he tries to escape with her. He's sent to 511 which jumbles up his memories and once he leaves starts to act out the things he learned in the readings and at Kinderheim. All the while believing the horrors at Red Rose were his own. Then Nina wakes him up from that false memory and he begins to realize that his whole life is "fake". That his own memories arent even really his. And so, in his twisted mind he thinks he doesnt even exist/doesnt deserve to exist, so better to end it all and make it like he really never existed.

2024-03-19 21:34:34 +0000 UTCI saw the ending with the mom and choosing a kid as the origin of Johan’s nihilistic philosophy and the whole “lives are not equal”. But Tenma not only not shooting Johan but also saving his life a second time as shattering Johan’s nihilistic philosophy. Love how well written this show is

2024-03-19 16:26:56 +0000 UTCI first watched this as a 15 year old kid and now i'm rewatching it in my thirties with you guys and it hits so much harder this time. I nominate NANA as one of the potential series you guys can watch if you haven't already :)
