Even simple spells or enchantments put a lot of strain on the body if the crystal is used "by hand", and could even lead to permanent spiritual damage if the spell was strong. We've seen that in the Bloodfang's den. Spellslingers were designed specifically to withstand the spiritual pressure of both the user's mana and the power from the crystal, thanks to the advanced magical inscriptions in the blade. You don't technically have these on your body. We haven't seen Asterios use crystals again not because I've forgotten about them but because it's not something you want to do freely, and also, using your body as the conductor of the spell, which is external and not internal like casting, does limit what kind of magic you can use with these crystals. Like, he wouldn't be able to use the one in this chapter or his hand would literally melt. Therefore the name of the weapon, it slings spells like a crossbow does bolts. And yeah, it would be able to cast things like Ice Javelin or Fireball too if the crystal was enchanted with it.
